Why isn't split screen vertical instead of horizontal

With all the newer tvs being widescreen, it seems like it would be more enjoyable to play vertical split screen rather than horizontal.

It's probably because most games need it to be out (racing games, shooters etc.) so you can see better.

Yeah, this is really a developers choice of action. Sometimes they decide they want to do both... And other times they will decide on horizontal.

It's mostly horizontal 'cause.. who wants to see the sky or the floor? It makes more sense to focus on the sides.

Army of Two: 40th day is vertical split screen unless you set the screen ratio to 4:3. Why are most games horizontal split screen? Because the vertical one sucks.
