Why isn't there more character creation in games?

I know character creation takes alot of time to "make" but i would enjoy games like gear's and Left 4 Dead if I could make my own survior or COG does anyone else share my opinion?

Character creation is typically reserved for games in which you have choice. Where are super imposing your own personal beliefs and decisions on the character your playing. Games like Gears or L4D are really straight forward, events will unfold exactly the same regardless of what your COG may look like.

umm it would be cool, but sometimes the game's story is heavily set on a character that they have already created. The only one that seemed to do it well so far are games like fighting games and games by Bioware. I haven't done much research on this though, so there may be many more games that integrate character creation well.

^This basicly. It would be awesome but your right some games rely heavily on the character they create. Some games would not be affected by customization while others would.

Well it has it uses but its hard to make a good character without having a set character and character creation usally isnt that deverese and lacks quality so your custom hero ends up looking quite bland and generic. If a game is gonna have character creation though Mass effect goes about it the right way.

Well, mass effect was partially successful. Compared to some other games, me's facial animations are non-existent. Sort of ruins the mood sometimes.

well yeah that and sometimes they get lazy eye and glaucoma lol. Mass effect does a better job than most though even if its not perfect which is why im not a big fan of character creation in SP.

I agree about the facial expression in ME. Turned me off the game right away, along with Shephard's non-personality.

I would much have Shephard be a developed character than a 'placeholder' for yourself.

Many games need the character's physical appearance to dictate some of their traits as well as to establish a more memorable character (especially for franchises)

You can't market custom created characters. Think about it. Would Mario or Link or Master Chief be so recognizable if you could change their faces?

Thank god there isn't. Only games that should really have character creation as a main point is something like RPG's or something. If we had character creation in all games we wouldn't have popular characters such as Laura Croft, Sam Fisher, Agent 47..they'd all be mindless people that don't talk...which for the most part seems to be character created persons.

character creation is not something that meshes well when a developer is trying to tell a story about specific characters. It really detracts from a story if a character is random and makes no sense in the context of the game. That is why it isn't in more games. That and the thing you mentioned. Ya know, more work and whatnot.

Great examples and just plain knowledge... Games that should have CC but didn't... Borderlands for sure, Anygame where the lead doesn't talk, (Halo3 Odst... Reach looks like the lead stays silent so I hope campaign and MP are both customizable) Any competitive MP game, but limit it to asthetics,
