I think Microsoft have slipped up big time here, which is kind of funny seeing as a PC company they have the experience not to mess it up, yet have.

Sony are miles ahead in this department, since even the PS2 days with FFXI and with loads of MMORPGS scheduled for release on the PS3.

Huxley, Marvel Online, FF14 (no longer coming to Xbox supposedly) all promising looking mmorpgs for the 360 that have just vanished, along with any information from Microsoft about it's plans in this area.

It is crazy basically;

Microsoft could easily subsidise any work needed, with a small bit of the profit they are making from Xbox Live subscriptions, also they could once they get mmorpgs onto the system, subsidise a 6month free period or something to get people playing them, spend money to make money, more people playing on games on the xbox and xbox live can be turned into more cash for them in the long run. In the old days of Xbox live when you could get the years subscription free brought loads of people in that turned into subscribers later.

If Sony can attract MMORPG games and companies onto it's free PSN and it charges the companies for the pleasure, then why is Microsoft who are arguably in the better position here to take advantage of the opportunity as they don't charge and have the money to attract big mmorpgs, snoozing and turning down free cash.

MMORPGS will never work on a console, PS3 or 360.

1) They need a huge user base to function properly. Look at big games like Killzone 2 or Call of Duty: WaW. Both were block buster games now down to about 30,000 users online which is not enough to support a full sized MMORPG.

2) MMORPGS are best suited for PC because of the mouse and keyboard. A gamepad will never be as easy to use or versatile as mouse and keyboard.

Because no one is dumb enough to spend 10$ a month on top of their Live charges. Besides, FFXI sucked, and the upcoming ones for PS3 will be better on PC.

Consoles shouldn't have MMOs or RTS games on it.

what about star trek and champions, ... but, i'm happy with a mmo system mixed with lobby, like for PvP You join 1 lobby, or make a private match with your friends or a dungeon lobby, or go into an open world. and kind of dragon ageish controls (with spells) but without needing to pause n stuff.

Final Fantasy XIV was never announced as a 360 game to begin with. The MMO genre has never been a big hit with consoles so it's not a big deal if the 360 is behind in that category, really.

I wouldn't mind a mini keyboard just for mmorpgs on the xbox 360, if they make mmos free on the xbox 360, I'd gladly buy it.

In order to make a proper MMO on a console, you need to be able to attach a keyboard and mouse. The PS3 can do this but sadly Microsoft probably won't unless they make you pay upwards of 50$ for one of their own. You also need a lot of people with big hard drives and a large number of the user base is still working with 20 gigs. The reason that Final Fantasy online worked with the 360 and the Ps2 was because there is already a large user base on the PC so it didn't really matter if they gained much when they put it on the consoles. Phantasy Star worked because it's not really an MMO, it's more of a dungeon battle game with out a persistent world.

Still, Let's say they make mmos free, the 50$ would be fine.

There would have to be a revamp of the system. No more macro bar, no more list of abilities. There would be hotkeys. I could see a game like Oblivion working as an MMO, but not Warcraft style games. Instanced areas would be able to keep the lag down (think EVE), and new players could get a rundown in an instanced beginners area that could be skipped (think Star Wars Galaxies). There is a lot of potential for success, but there is also a lot of risk in bringing a new game genre to a new system.

I believe in future gaming, MMOs and RTSs will work great on consoles, right now first of all, not many people are on live, consoles are still not in almost every household, and then the controls. Though PC games will never die of course, but consoles will be solving these issues sometime soon, the gaming industry is still young! Back to topic, there is supposed to be Conan, and Secret World, APB comming out, but I don't have any hopes of these because it looks low quality.

afew things that need to be pointed out:

1.FF14 is still heading towards the 360. the game was always supposed to be heading towards the 360 since SE announced it.

2. what "loads" of MMORPG's are heading the ps3? two games that haven't been brought into the light in months(or years).

Exactly. These two are on the 360 and have a monthly fee, but do not require a Gold subscription to Live.

To those who have said MMOs are meant ONLY for PC not consoles:

At the moment, this may be true but if a company created a unique control system to replace keyboard and mouse, and had little-no lag with a decent fun factor, I think the game would be a hit.

Who said MMOs had to have a WoW feel? Why couldnt it be Borderlands with 400 people in one world?

I remember alot of people saying shooters could never be done on consoles. Look where we are now.

The thing with MMORPGs is that they need to have a large community that will keep playing consistently so that the community will flourish. Most console games merely follow a 2 year trend until the next big thing comes along to take its place.

The only free MMO I've played and had fun with was CABAL Online.

But that fun soon crashed because once you hit levels 30 - 35 it just becomes a huge grind fest, since you've already explored most of the worlds.

This. Quit whinging about what isn't on the consoles and play what is, and if you don't like it, start playing WoW or something. Damn.
