The television shows are saved to your hard drive, so especially with all these short seasons due to the writer's strike, it'll be cheaper to buy them over live than purchasing the DVD set. As for watching shows on the computer, there are usually some commercials, and once the next season starts the previous season is gone. Buying TV shows on Live makes sense if you'll watch them more than once, and if you don't need the portability of a DVD. For example, I would never buy a season of Lost online because I'd watch it once and then it would just be a waste of hard drive space. But I would consider buying a season of 30 Rock because I can literally watch those over and over back to back for weeks on end. It's not for everyone, but being able to buy TV shows over live is a nice option to have.
Also, Microsoft isn't the only company to do this. Sony and Apple both sell tv episodes.

This thread should be over already.
Resident-Shell made the point in that Sony and Apple do it as well.
And for all the sneaky online ways off watching it are usually squashed real quick by the publishing companies (on YouTube), or you get a poor quality product.
Honestly, I don't think many things on the XBL Marketplace are worth purchasing, but again, as Resident-Shell said, it's about options.
