Why won't they give us a Blu-ray add on?

I mean nobody gives a damn about downloading films, they give us a now obsolete HD DVD add on, and now that's failed they say "oh well you're not getting a Blu-ray player because we backed the wrong horse so you will have to do with crappy downloads instead"

It seems like they don't give a damn about giving us the best expirience possible with our 360 and are only interested in saving face or trying to chip away at Blu-ray in a pathetic attempt to hinder its progress.

I don't want to buy a PS3 or a expensive Blu-ray player, I payed alot of money for this 360 sitting in front of me that's capable of outputting HD media, I want to play Blu-ray movies on my 360, I can play every other form of media, excpet the one that will be the most popular in a few years. The one that everybody wants.

Thanks for nothing MS.

About a year ago MS released a statement saying that if HD-DVD lost the format war (which has now occurred) that it was possible that they may decide to release a Blu-Ray add on player for the 360. So your wish may be closer than you think.

yep same. game devolopers don't listen to us. we didn't need another sequal to 50cent game but we ask for other games we get nothing.

i don't think microsoft wants to waste a couple million for a blue ray player which the ps3 has.

I just find it very strange that I can go out and STILL buy a HD DVD add on for my 360 , even though it's dead in the water, yet I can't buy a Blu-ray add on that will last me for the next decade.

I must be in the twilight zone as it makes no sense.

I'm only gonna get it if the RPG's are really good. The only reason i don't own one right now is the controller i never liked it. I had a ps2 for years then got xbox now it feels too weird. I'll probably buy one late this year.

Sounds like this could come as soon as next month...

"Insiders at Microsoft in the USA have told SmartHouse that Microsoft has already configured a standalone Blu-ray player that can be connected into an Xbox 360 and that subject to internal marketing and sales approvals the model could be on sale within 3 months."

http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/J7L7H2R4

Not saying it "WILL" happen but it is sounding more and more likely.

umm microsoft knows they dont need the blue ray anyways aleast at the momment why would they make a player when they can get people download movies for 2 bucks way cheaper to deal with then buying rights and w/e from sony and dealing with production and even 1 year warranty with it seeming like hell of a job to do that

summry

microsoft wont do it untill they need it for the games because games is how they make there money so ya really dont even count on it untill late 2009 but forsure it will be in next system it be a big mistake not to put it in there next system

the only thing about consoles these days is that theres no more exclusives, not saying thats a bad thing but i dont have any reason to play my ps3. The only games i have on there ARE exclusives, and its hard to find people to add to your friends because no one talks.

Sure the ps3 is great, but theres nothing on the ps3 that i cant get on the 360

Because now that Sony won, they'll be raising their royalty rates up the yin-yang just to rake in. Sony may claim they've all these people that were members of the BluRay Disc Association, but have any of you ever bothered to look at the member companies? Apple is listed, but they've not done anything for BluRay. My theory is that they're only listed because they co-own Pixar, which is co-owned by Disney. Also, most of the members there are movie companies, with no publishing/manufacturing facilities of their own to make BluRay drives or media. So none of them will be raking in any of the royalties either. I was hoping for HD-DVD to win, because it was easily the format that was better "thought/planned through". Also, since HD-DVD had no region locking, it would have been a great step forward for movies. Just as we're starting to finally get DRM-free music again from the record labels, the removal of region locking for movies (on HD-DVD) would have been a strong gesture for the consumer that we would finally be moving forward and companies could/would then focus their efforts on making great content worth buying. And for what it's worth, I'm at least able to enjoy my HD-DVD drive, because all the movies that I'd wanted to see in high def were either already on both formats (and better done on HD-DVD) or were HD-DVD exclusive.

Stand alone BD players are much more expensive. Also, it's not worth getting any BD player other than the PS3 right now because Sony uses the PS3's built-in hard drive to perform a buttload of voodoo which has allowed it to be the only BD player on the market to be able to go from Profile 1.0 (when it first came out) to 1.1 and now 2.0. No other stand-alone player on the market has been able to do that. Then again, a hard drive is also a luxury that the PS3 enjoys that most (if not all) BD players out there lack. If Microsoft does release a BD add-on drive to play BluRay movies, it could too enjoy the adaptability/upgradability benefits that the PS3 is enjoying, because the add-on drive need not have to store a lot of data - just simply have the player software loaded on the hard drive. Or if MS does it like the HD-DVD, it could have an internal storage with the player software needed to support BD Profile 1.*/2.*/etc. Because we all know Sony's hardware revision fetish will have them updating that profile really quick. And if you're using a stand-alone player, it'll mean having to throw away whichever you buy every year and having to replace it with a player supporting the new profile revision(s).

The format war is over, there is no need for MS or anyone to dislike Blu-ray now, it's like saying I hate DVD  makes no sense. It's time for MS to swallow its pride and release a Blu-ray player for Xbox 360. It would sell like hot cakes and would actually stop a lot of 360 owners from buying a PS3

probably.

Can someone tell me something about Blu-Ray? I've never watched a movie on blu-ray except in stores. So I've seen 10 minutes maximum of a blu-ray movie. I didn't notice any difference between Staw Wars on DVD and Star Wars on Blu-Ray. Does it enhance the plot in any way? Does Jar Jar Binks get less annoying? xD

Anyways... I bought my 360 to play games, I couldn't care less about Hi-def. I just wanna play Mass Effect, BioShock, Halo 3, Gears of War and wait anxiously for Fable 2, Too Human, Banjo-Kazooie 3, and Alan Wake.

DVD was created by Toshiba, too. And DVD did not need the constant revisions of hardware that Sony already has and no doubt will continue doing. A DVD player that existed when the format first came to be can still play DVD movies released now. A BluRay player made at launch (more specifically, the Samsung BDP-1000) can't even play dual-layer BD's, which is what nearly all BD movies are on now. And unless you're willing to go through nightly firmware updates, forget about playing any BD movies made by Fox; since they'd jumped on the BluRay bandwagon, they've been constantly using new versions of BluRay's DRM, which seems to be with the explicit purpose of making it as impossible to play the damned movie as possible.

Well sometime later this year there is going to be a price cut on both the 360 and the ps3. Since i already own a 360 and at the end of the year the ps3 is expected to finnally be done being fully backwards compatable (or at least as done as it is going to be) Ill finnally be able to replace my ps2 .

About this whole blue-ray fiasco unless they start making 360 games on blue-ray which just might happen later on next year I see no real reason to buy it as an add-on. And if they do start making 360 games on blue-ray They should just replace the old drives with the new ones for free like sony did with the ps2's once gta: san andreas came out (since a lot of the older ps2's couldn't read dual layered cd's, any ps2 that couldn't read it but worked normally they actually replaced with a newer model that could read dual-layered cd's). Because who would make a game for blue-ray on the 360 if it isn't going to be accessabile readily to the whole 360 community? And if none of the games are going to be on blue-ray what would be the point of even getting one? So either they stop caring about it an continue on the hd-drive which they probably will for a while or give us a replacement for free.

It takes 6 months+ for features on xbox live in America to reach xbox live in the rest of the world, so the fact that it is about 1 month since HDDVD was officially dropped, and all of 6 days since the end of March when Toshiba officially stopped supporting it I think you are being very hasty wondering where the bluray add-on is.

In Europe I wouldn't expect any HD addon drive until atleast Christmas 2008

Yeah thats a point also 360 is getting cheaper and its gaming machine but yeah it has the power to do HD so it must give it to audience who want it. I although want a gaming machine I wman Blu Ray DVD's are really costly and once you watch a movie its gone its not like a game and doesnt has replay value so I still prefer thetares.

But if 360 owners want a Blu Ray player for their 360 giving them that would be great. Yeah also dd you guys know Ms and Toshiba are modfying the DVD to DVD 2 format and they are gonna get it to stream 960p movies and HD audio enabled with 20 GB capactiy and your 360's current drive would be more than enough to make it run properly for movies or games.

See there is theread abt this in this 360 forum.

What the heck are you babbling about?!

Go check it out there is a thread abt this in 360 forum and yeah this information I have heard it many time in good sites and from peoples. This is true as per my knowledge I assure you and why did you highlighted the text is it bad thing to do such a updgrade. I am mean its for free for sure.

Wow I stand corrected. It just sounded so farfetched, but it turns out it's true haha. It's interesting. This might actually turn the tides on the hd media war. I mean you get pretty much the same result but for cheaper than BD. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out later this year. By the way any news on when they would start this?

Digital distribution isn't viable worldwide yet. In a couple of years it may start to be, but not yet.

America may have decent broadband speeds, as do Japan, but outside of that a lot of places don't have widespread broadband at a decent enough speed to download films. If I want to watch a film I want to be able to do it almost immediately - decide the film, then watch it. By the time I've finished downloading, I could have already watched the first hour of the film.

Also remember that only about 50% of 360's even have Live/Internet connections, so having downloadable content is pretty much useless for about half the people that have the console. Restricting HD quality movies to download only will make the PS3 much more preferable for the vast majority of consumers.

The 360 needs a physical drive capable of running HD quality movies. A successor to the 360, in say 2010-2012 may be able to rely on downloads only, but we are too early for it now.

Cant say when but the group was forned in Q3 2007 so this might not be very soon, also HD media war will not turn tides Bluray already got ahead yeah but atleast you wouldnt lack HD movies and mainly the space issue for games will no longer be problem. The best thing is no upgradation required at all.

What makes you think a blue ray add on would be any cheaper than a blue ray player and why do you need that?
