It had to start with a 3 so people would think it was the same generation as the PS3 - the main rival. If it was called Xbox 2, and competing with PS3, human nature just makes you think that 3 is higher than 2 so would be better.
It was suppose to mean that the system offers you everything - entertainment, games, and online interaction. The three hundred sixty (a full circle) degree experience
Oh i guess my thorey was wrong, i thought it had 360 bits thats why the graphics where soo good and they just decided to put in the name. i thought it was like the nintendo 64 (64bits)
I always thought that circles were the inspiration for the XBox360 and seriously, about everything is round on this thing, even the bottom of the Box is rounded xD
What I remember from E3 a few years back, they named it the Xbox 360 because at the time Wii was still codenamed Nintendo Revolution and Sony had the Playstation 3. Microsoft didn't want the Xbox 2 going against the Playstation 3 because people would naturally consider the Xbox 2 inferior. So they needed to stay on the same level with the masses, and since the Revolution was a major mystery at the time, Microsoft also wanted to capitalize on that and give their system a name that encompass everything that the coming generation had to offer.
