Why Xbox 360 IS 360 and not f.e. 260 or 140 ?

They needed a competetitive name against Playstation 3. They are both essentially 3's. Xbox 2 would sound outdated compared to PS 3.

It had to start with a 3 so people would think it was the same generation as the PS3 - the main rival. If it was called Xbox 2, and competing with PS3, human nature just makes you think that 3 is higher than 2 so would be better.

It was suppose to mean that the system offers you everything - entertainment, games, and online interaction. The three hundred sixty (a full circle) degree experience

I always thought that circles were the inspiration for the XBox360 and seriously, about everything is round on this thing, even the bottom of the Box is rounded xD

It also suggests bringing the game all around you. The 360 degree experience. Those of us with surround sound can attest to that.

What I remember from E3 a few years back, they named it the Xbox 360 because at the time Wii was still codenamed Nintendo Revolution and Sony had the Playstation 3. Microsoft didn't want the Xbox 2 going against the Playstation 3 because people would naturally consider the Xbox 2 inferior. So they needed to stay on the same level with the masses, and since the Revolution was a major mystery at the time, Microsoft also wanted to capitalize on that and give their system a name that encompass everything that the coming generation had to offer. So it's

  • Microsoft = Xbox
  • Sony = 3
  • Nintendo = Revolution

A full 360 degree re-creation of the Xbox, though I question the external hard drive sometimes...

Was that a joke? Or did you mean it as in it can also process 64-bit games?... What is it anyway? 256-bit? I remember PS2 being 128-bit...

Maybe it's just cause I've hard it for so long, but it sounds kinda smooth when you say it, not clunky like a random number.
