I'm on vacation and don't want to put up with the power converter bs. Also I travel to Europe often so it's a safe investment, but anyways back to the question will it work?

Nope, US use a different power set up to Europe, there is something you can connect between the two to reduce the power going to the console but I've no idea where you get them from.

Would have thought trying it without a converter would just overload the console... simple as that.

Yeah, it would just overload. European power is 220, US power is 110.

I doubt it would damage your console, but unless there's a voltage switch on the power brick the built-in circuit breaker will trip and prevent it from powering up. That's my guess anyway.

Well, I don't think that the chipset inside the 360 is any different between US and EU Xbox 360s. As far as I can tell, the power brick takes whatever the local electicity voltage is (i.e. 110V or 220V) and converts it to a suitable level for the 360. So in principal, the only difference between 360s would be the country that each power brick is rated for. In other words, I can't see why your idea wouldn't work because the output from the power brick into the 360 will be the same. Only the input and what conversion takes place within the power brick would be different.

I'm pretty sure that the power brick has a sticker on the bottom of it telling you what it outputs. You could get a European power brick and compare stickers to make sure the output voltage/ampage is the same for both. If so, I think you're good.

Try this at your own risk though - I'm not sure I'm right, and I take no responsibility for your console melting if you try this. :)

Next question: How do you get around the PAL/NTSC display issue? You could get a VGA cable and use a PC monitor I suppose - they're universal.

You'll need a step down converter. Using the European power block on a U.S. console will only overload it and potentially do alot of damage to your console. Step down converters are very easy to get hold of i airports as your travelling and are also pretty cheap.

Most modern TV's can take NTSC and Pal signals nowadays.
