you would need drivers in either case. the plug and play cable only transmits electricity, not data. so the plug and play cable will not work. if you have a wired controler those will work. for a wireless controler you are going to need the pc reciever. sorry no cheap way out of this one.rdoEh? Thats what USB stands for somthing like that anyway. sorry, the connecters only connect to those metal connectors in the middle of the battery bay, it dosn't connect to the input/output. when you are useing the plug and play it is still cating as a wireless controler, only getting power from the cord.  do a quick test if you dont believe me. plug your controler into your pc instead of the 360. now use the controler. even tho it's not connected to the 360 it works just fine with the 360. it dosn't do anything to the pc it's actually conneceted to. i dont know why ms designed it that way, only that they did. i suspect it was cheaper to produce.
