I have a modem connected to a router on my desktop computer which connects 2 laptops in the house to internet, I want to connect my xbox 360 to xbox live wirelessly. Would I need to buy the xbox 360 designed wireless networking adapter. I ask some dude from future shop and had no clue what I was talking about.

The official one is good, its wireless 'a' compatable which is why its not to cheap. You can get a 3rd party one that plug into the ethernet port but if you want it wireless a it will be about the sme price and wont look as nice. Id get the official one as it looks better, is wireless a and you just plug it in and thats it, but its upto you. A 3rd party one will need setting up with a pc or laptop, it wont be as simple or click onto your 360 but you may save a little.
