alright so this game is kicking my a$$$ and well i dont want to be a weenie and lower the difficulty. so anybody got any general advice?

I think I'm about to finish up in Flotsam (Triss has been kidnapped) and I haven't gotten any new armor and I just got some new steel swords, but usng a basic silver one so I was thinking part of the reason I'm having so much difficulty is that my equipment sucks. However most of the stuff is really expensive.....

Roll. Take your time and try to get behind your opponent to do more damage. In the Prologue chapter where you have to use the Ballista, if you go a bit southwest from the Ballista, you'll see a body dressed in white garb. Go near it to unlock an ability that allows you to do more damage if you can strike your enemies from behind. Abuse Quen. Note that for casting magic, you have to be perfectly still so make sure you're not near enemies. Use Oils to increase the damage of your swords. Use the Steel sword for humans, and the Silver sword for Monsters. Don't forget this or you'll get slaughtered. There is a mission you can do in Floatsam that leads you down some caves. DO NO go here if you do not have a silver sword or you will die. Miserably. After you max out the beginning Witcher tree, hit the magic specializing tree and max out Quen. It'll save you a lot of time. When you unlock counters, combat will start becoming easier. Use traps and bombs when you fight large groups. Try to pick off one enemy at a time.

variety- i'm playing normal

oblivion- i am actually doing a decent amount of that stuff but thanks

I gotta question about "researching" monsters, in the journal it says you can read about their weaknesses, how do you find the books? are they lying around like any other items? and does the research work like in bioshock where you automatically get a damage bonus or does it tell you how what kind of techniques you should use to fight them?

You'll find books lying around or you can buy them at shops. They tell you what kind of techniques you should use to do major damage against them.

If you are at the begging of the game, it is tough at the beginning, use bombs, traps and potions and you should be fine, in Act 2 the game gets to be so much easier.

For that cave filled with neckers have a lot of grapeshot bombs with you and use the bombs to destroy all the nekkers in the cave. Also learn how to use quen, upgrade your magic skill tree and combat skill tree(I don;t remember what it is called) and learn how to counter especially on normal and higher.

Very big peice of advice here....Do not buy equipment, instead buy diagrams and pay others to forge your equipment!!! it will save you a ton of money. After you beat the big squid like beast you get materials to craft armor from its hide, if you searched its hide that is. Its the best equipment you can get in flatsam.

Just upgrade your equipment with the diamond armor upgrade, forget every other armor upgrade. Use good sword upgrades. Use good contagions to boost your stats permanently. Silver swords work really well on monsters, and normal steel swords work well on humans. Move around a lot when you fight, evade a lot and use protection or turn enemies against each other magics.
