As an ex-priest who did 40 man raids every night for 2 years I can assure that it would not. There is absolutely no way to play wow effectively without a keyboard and mouse setup. I challange any person to do a high end raid boss on a controller.
A good point. I played WoW from day one until this January when I realized it was a waste of time. But since you wouldn't have to rely on someone paying for a Vent account, most everyone would have mics for communication. You'd need some kinda of auto-target system / button to go between targets (LB and RB maybe?). It would be hard, I know, and it would take a whole lot of getting used to. But if they ever decide to do it (they won't), I think using L and R to scroll through commands, stick to move, stick for camera, A could be jump, make one button your basic attack, and then maybe have it so you can map your own controls to buttons. Making macros ridiculously easy.
This topic really got me thinking about WoW again, dammit! lol
