I think I might be the worst Black Ops player of all time. Granted I just got the game yesterday, and I didn't expect to go online and dominate immediately. This is my first COD game so of course I played some of the missions first. I play quite a few FPSs but this game is its own beast.

My first online match I went something like 1-17. Next game 7-8. Its crazy how much is going on within one game, at one point I got bitten by a dog! I obviously have a lot to learn, what tips do you guys have other than "practice makes perfect"?

Thanks in advance for your non-sarcastic comments. :)

This was the third FPS game I've played really (sans Borderlands, I don't want to really count it) and I wasn't great at it, and I'm just a tad above average. An important thing is to try combinations that work for you, or the map you're playing on. Also, while most people may give you some flame for it, Ghost is actually one of the more useful perks in the first slot.

Check your corners, stay in groups but keep distance from team mates, use the right gun for you (power but also with quick fire)

If you want to feel like you're doing good, use Hardline as it gives you killstreaks quicker

Also Ghost makes you not show up on the map or make noise, and Ghost Pro makes your name not appear above your head

And CT is awesome, use it to try out all the new stuff you get

CoD games are easy as hell. just stick to the corners, don't run out into the open like a dumb ass, and camp if you have to. no sense in running out and getting killed.

1. utilize the Combat Training to familarize yourself with the maps and guns.

2. Once you find a gun or two that you like, stick with them and know their limitations.

3. Use Claymores, but dont just put them in doors as that is where everyone puts them. I put them in very random spots or even on cars that will exploded if the claymore is tripped.

4. Use the Hardline perk. It gets you your Killstreak rewards in one less kill. With that make sure you have the RCXD as one of your Killstreaks. They actually stack and combines with Hardline, I have been able to have 8 save up at one time before. That will get you an easy 8-10 kills if not more.

5. Watch your radar.

I was in the same boat for a few rounds, best piece of advise I can give you is enjoy the game and just play the mp you will soon learn the ropes. I found the combat training far too easy even on the tough difficultly. The bots just seem to stand still a lot looking for headshots :)

It's honestly going to take repetition, learning the maps in and out is your greatest ally. Like most have said, learning what works for you and then capitalizing on it is your best option. Try multiple class combinations, play every game type to figure out which style and pace you prefer, this will determine how much of the game you get to experience and what that experience will become. Most of all just try to have fun, a lot of people forget it's just a game intended for the sole purpose of entertaining; nothing more, nothing less.

The biggest thing is to learn the maps. Once you have them down, it is easier to know where the opposing team respawns. Also, find a gun or two that you like to use, but at first it is tough because the first few guns aren't that great. Like others had said, play Combat Training, this will allow you to learn the maps and try out different guns and tactics.

Thanks for the replies guys, and yes I did do some combat training before playing online. I've never been the type to worry too much about the K/D ratio, but it sucks that others can see it. I mostly just play games for fun, not stats anyhow. With this game its so much harder than Halo because if your enemy sees you first, you're dead. In that regard its realistic but frustrating for a new player. Like I said this is my first COD game so the goal is to get better and learn the ropes and have fun, and be prepared to dominate when the next game comes out.

I really sucked when I first started playing too (still do but not as much haha) but a few things that helped me;

- Learning the maps. Knowing where the hotspots are, the spots where people like to hide etc
- Learning which weapons and attachments work for you
- Headphones! I don't know if you use a headset but they've saved me a lot, being able to hear footsteps and when someone is reloading etc
- I find flak jacket invaluable, but then I mainly play Domination and grenades are flung about a lot

And I know you already mentioned it but time and practice really do make a difference. You'll learn little tips and tricks as you go and you will just get better with time. Oh and like someone else said, just have fun with it. If I'm wound up / in a bad mood and then I have bad matches and I suck even more. Don't worry about your k/d, just play for fun and you'll find you'll have better matches :)

I agree. After playing combat training for a day, I got a pretty good score (I think) in a couple games, considering I'm no good at CoD. :P

Great feedback, thanks! I don't currently use headphones, just the default xbox 360 headset. Yeah, gaming is meant to be fun and that's what I'm going for. I think that the addition of stat-tracking to so many games has made people take themselves to seriously. There would be less videos of people raging on youtube over games if thy would just play for fun. To each his own.

The only thing that is annoying about k/d is that friends can see it. Oh well.

I hear you about stats. I think in some games they work nicely, it brings back that desire to beat your friends high-scores like we used to as kids, but these days stats are taken too seriously and become a way to mock other people rather than fuel friendly competition.

I have a brother-in-law who plays Black Ops too and although we're usually online at the same time, we'd never played any matches together until last night. His k/d is a lot higher than mine and it kind of intimidated me and put me off playing matches with him. Last night I spoke to him and we decided to finally play some Black Ops together, we played wager matches and I beat him every single time! It showed me that having a higher k/d doesn't make you the better player (not saying I'm a better player either!) but it lead to some playful banter so hey, if your friends can see your k/d it's not so bad, it can lead to some pretty amusing throwdowns!

Definitely try combat training, get used to all the fundamentals and get the general feel for the game, also take the time to scope out the maps. Once you feel comfortable with yourself then you should move onto player matches.

This is my main issue right here. If some of my friends are so hardcore about their k/d ratio and win % are they going to want to play with someone like me who is a noob with a terrible k/d? I don't take it personal, but I think stats take away from the fun of gaming sometimes.

Thanks for the continuing feedback everyone. There isn't any option to make stats invisible to others is there?

Get yourself some turtlebeach and those yellow glasses that reduce eye strain. If you can get your hands on a modded controller and a lag switch, you're golden.

Only take shots when you know you can land them, nothings worse then revealing your location to the person you're shooting at. Also always make sure you when you shoot at someone, that he isn't about to cut a corner, turn around and kill you. I don't recommend camping, but if you do, make sure to have a motion sensor. I'm kind of an anti-camp person, and use warlord pro so I can have 2 semtex or frag to flush them out.

Absolutely, I have learned this the hard way! It sucks so much when I see someone running away from me and I try to shoot them but miss, then they turn around and quickly kill me because they have a stronger gun than me because I'm only level 8 so far. Also it doesn't seem like COD has all of the anti aiming that a lot of other FPSs have. Goldeneye for example, when you aim down the sight it automatically targets the player for you. I'm messing with different sensitivity levels to figure out what works best for me. Aiming actually takes some skill in this game.

Just play a lot. I didn't focus on anything to get better at the game, I just played it. You should figure it out the game yourself by simply massing time on it and I have a 3.2 k/d and a 360 score per minute in TDM. Both of which obviously aren't the best but it certainly isn't bad either.

Camping doesn't make you better so don't take that advice, it actually masks a horrible player.

Regardless of that, don't do too much combat training as the adjustment back to online can be brutal once you are used to how bots react, I found when I start struggling just switch up guns for a bit, even if you consider the gun you are using "old faithful" sometimes you just need to switch things up to do well again.

4. Use the Hardline perk. It gets you your Killstreak rewards in one less kill. With that make sure you have the RCXD as one of your Killstreaks. They actually stack and combines with Hardline, I have been able to have 8 save up at one time before. That will get you an easy 8-10 kills if not more.

kungfuchaos

I actually disagree with that. RCXD is pretty useless. When you use it you get what... one kill? MAYBE a multikill if your lucky, but most of the time you will only get one. Whats even worse is kills with kill streaks don't count towards more kill streaks, so after you use it you are no closer to getting the better killstreaks.

The spy plane is much more useful. As opposed to only getting one kill for yourself the spy plane helps your ENTIRE TEAM by showing the locations of the other team. That way you all can find an advantageous position to take them out. Any kills you get while a spy plane is active DO go towards higher killstreaks since you are not using the actual killstreak to get the kills. Whats more, if those higher killstreaks happen to be things like bombing runs and such you will know where to place them for maximum effectiveness. Without a spy plane you will have to guess where to call them in and hope an enemy is standing there.

Call of Duty is not a shooter based on skill. All you have to do is learn how to play a slow and camping playstyle and your scores will go through the roof. MW2 was my first console CoD and I started out the exact same way you did with 1-20 and 2-19 games. Within 12 hours I discovered that staying in an area for 2 or 3 minutes then moving to another made it simple to get killsreaks and thus win the match. The gameplay is fundamentally flawed as a simple tactic of staying in cover in a certain area guarantees success. It works so well that I was able to get a nuke in 8 games in a row back in MW2. With Black Ops, I always ran Blackbird-Chopper-Dogs and got it about 80% of the time. Skill does not factor into it, just hold an area for a few minutes the switch to another one close by.

HAHAHA! That is completely wrong. The game practically aims for you. There is no skill in aiming in this game because as soon as you are even near the target, the game pulls it in for you.
