I am considering buying an upconverting DVD player for my standard def. movies. Does the DVD player in the X360 do the same thing since it plays games in 720p and 1080i or not? I am confused about this. Can anybody help?

I saw this in a blog:

Q: Will the HD DVD player upconvert current DVD titles

A: If you use component cables, the player will not upconvert DVD titles. If you connect a VGA cable between the 360 and the TV set, you can upconvert your DVD titles to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p - depending on what your TV supports

Well I guess if you have HDMI cables from out of your box to your display then yes.

I understand that the HD DVD player that you can buy for the 360 can do it but does the standard DVD player that comes with the system upconvert to output movies in 720p or 1080i like it does for games?

Ah, sorry. I should have read better. From what I understand it does not. Just another way for microsoft to make you purchase their add-ons.

The standard DVD drive in the 360 will upconvert DVDs to 720p, 1080i/p with a VGA or HDMI connection. No need for the add-on, unless of course you want HD DVD movies.

I thought that might be true but I wasn't sure. Do you have proof at all for this? I would like to know for sure of course before I go out and buy and upconverter. I dont really see that big a difference now when I play my standard def movies on my HDTV then I did on my old standard def. tv.

The 360 already upscales DVDs with the normal drive, but with VGA or HDMI like you said. HD-DVD drive is not needed. Though, the quality compared to a real popular upscaler like an Oppo can't compare. But then again, HD-DVD players are getting so cheap, they are near the same price as $200 upscaler.

Upscaling is not going to make movies look like HD, it's just a better DVD player method for HDTVs. All that near HD quality is just hype. Might be a 5-10% upgrade in picture quality. Movies that already look great on DVD look good upscaled, but all are not and you have other issues like bad color, compression, that DVDs have. And I think it's mostly a gimmick when a player has upscaling, like suddenly that's what only matters. Keep in mind your HDTV upscales TV and 480p TVs, how else would it fill the screen. It's just a often a player might do better, but usually a $30-$100 upscaler is not going to be the best out there.

A quality upscaler like Oppo has features to help reduce aliasing, remove compression, and just a more outstanding DVD player on top of "just" upscaling. All for a smoother more natural looking picture on say a 50+inch HDTV so it doesn't look like a low-res computer mpeg movie. But in no way HD like, though, some movies will impress and make you think it's HD sometimes until you have the real thing.

Nothing can compare with a real HD movie, with both on Blu-ray and HD-DVD are picture perfect, no color bleeding, better color, more detail in shadows and dark scenes, no visible compression and so on. Not even the 360 LIVE HD movie rentals can hold up, as they have compression issues.

But again, seeing how HD-DVD players are on sale for $250 now, (not the 360 add-on) and come with great deals, movie bundles, you might as well skip the $200 Oppo upscaler and get a real HD-DVD player, which usually Toshiba ones are decent upscalers at the same time. Don't know the quality of the 360 upscaling though.

My proof is that I have used my 360 this way and I can see the input as being 1080p.

Here is an article about the quality of the 360 upconverting and it is pretty bad. I have been using my PS3 as my upconverter and I think it looks fine. What I like about the PS3 is that you can actually turn off the upconversion while the movie is playing, so you can see the difference.

I agree with what TimmyB said. If you are going to look at a player like the Oppo, you might as well spend the extra cash and get an HD DVD drive. The upconverting is top notch and you can play HD DVD discs.
