Just got done playing through the entire list of XBL Indie Games. I didn't play all of them of course, but I went through the list and played all the best games / and the games that interested me the most. I have to say the whole Indie game thing is a mixed bag. There are nearly 1,200 games nowon the service and nerly all of them arn't even worth a dollar. But mixed in there are some real gems that make it worthwhile. Theseare the best I found:

Flotilla, Square Off, Project Delta, Barf and Beer, Abduction Action, Battle Havoc, Blood Tempest, HB Blast Off, Shoot 1UP, Soul, SoulCaster, Zombie Estate, Urban Space Squirrels, BitStream. - What are some of your favorite Indie Games?

I think another problem is that even when somebody makes a great indie game, it gets burried in with all the crap and people never even play it. It's kinda sad that Avatar ______ - (fill in the blank) are the best selling games just because of the noveltyfactor, not because they're any good. Do you guys buy Indie games? What are your favorites? Does anybody really care about them at all?

It gives people in the indie and home brew community a place to share their games. Sometimes they think outside the box and give us different ideas on gaming. What's wrong with that? And they're inexpensive games. Usually only 80 ms points. I bought Avatar Showdown, and as ridiculous as it is, it always makes me laugh and entertains me for a few minutes. That's worth $1 to me.

OP, I admire your dedication in sifting through 1200 indie games. While I have completely done so myself yet, I have found a few gems. People REALLY need to realize it's not 100% crap since a few are great and inexpensive. :]

I Made A Game With Zombies in It, Gerbil Physics and Gerbil Physics 2, Machivelli's Ascent, Ninja Bros, Tobe's Vertical Adventure, and a few others I'm forgetting are all great and 1 dollar each!

Tell me, would you rather 10 of these gems or some overpriced/overhyped arcade game like Deadliest Warrior? That game was awful and was priced at 10 dollars. And no, I'm not blackballing the Xbox Live Arcade. I think there are many titles there worth checking out. HOWEVER, just because a game doesn't get MASSIVE hype and attention prior to/during launch doesn't automatically mean it's bad. This is the problem with a lot of gamers today. They want the best-rated, the newest, the 'hottest' titles, and they'll pass on most everything else. You know a lot of great people were not recognized as such until after death. You gotta look in all places, and give everything a chance before you completely banish it from your mind.

I've only tried a couple of the indie games. Never found one I liked. There isn't enough to them. It's almost like the guy who made it, got one basic feature working properly, then he put it on the marketplace. They're far too basic.

For the people bashing the Indie games, you do realize what they are right? These are games developed by people in the community. People like you and me. People who like to game and have the programming ability to create their own games. These aren't big budget games by Microsoft or Epic, etc. Sure some of them are hit or miss. Some of them are experimental. That's what you'll find in an indie community. Just look at the Android marketplace. But every so often someone can create a gem. And that person could possibly be recognized by a bigger studio to be hired, or that person can create his or her own independent studio. So if you don't like some of the games, that's fine, but at least recognize and respect the people who created them. Some people say, "If you don't like the game, why don't you just make one yourself?" Well these people did.

This kind of attitude infuriates me, but hey, it's your loss because there really are some great titles on the service. For proof, some of the better games solve over 100K units in 2009: http://www.gamerbytes.com/2010/01/indepth_xbox_live_indie_games.php Yes it's true that there are plenty of terrible ones but there are a few sites around that help to sift out the decent ones. I'll tell you why. There are no achievements for them. MS should allow them to put 100 Gamer points for each game, watch sales sky rocket.

Another problem is the name of the games. I made a game with zombies in it (with letters and numbers in the title) makes it sound like the game was created by small kids.

As far as i know, there are no trials for the games (trials no doubt help convince people to buy that game).

Nope! They all have 8 minute trials. They can also lock features out but by default the trial is just the full game cut off at 8 minutes. You are both absolutely right about the achievement points though, that would really help the channel. I can see why MS didn't allow it though - you'd probably have a huge amount of "games" that are really just a way for you to by 100 achievement pionts for a dollar.

I maed a game with zombies is a wolve in a sheepsskin - don't let yourself fool you. It's not a complex game - it is a title to have every once in a while some gos. But it is great! It has a custom soundtrack in a way you won't find in AAA or XBLA titles ... this game has sold over 100.000 copies and is considered one of the most successful titles on the indie marketplace. Judging it without having it played is a grave mistake (you can play it for free for 8 minutes!!!). And i'm not supporter of l33t speak (or whatever it is called) either! There are a lot of really cool games out there ... gnomic studios made one for example: Square Off ... it's a really cool game, you can play it with up to 3 friends (local), it got updates making it even better, and it costs you 1$ ... I am someone that cares for indie games ... not all indie games, just the good ones. And ignoring indie games is like eating everyday the same food. It's always a worthwhile experience to have a look at some exotic foods - you might find something you really like. Gnomic studios has posted a lot of videos of mine (thanks for that!!!) and on my website (www.indienerds.com) there is more (like trailers). If you are not up to going through all 1000+ indiegames, then check there ... i'm pretty sure you will find at least a handfull titles that you might like. Cheers, Gerald

yeah that is the problem - those games (did i really call it a game?) make people think that XBLIGs are good for a few laughs. Try to play Urban Space Squirrels - it costs you a dollar, it is a puzzle platformer with riddles that are equal to portal (no - i am serious!) ... just with the benefit of being longer. This game is evil - it is completely fair, with lots of checkpoints etc. but you will cry of frustration because you will get stuck. But only because the riddles are just awesome ... the best kind of frustration ever. If you are not into platformers - give breeze a go. Ohh it looks so sweet and shiny ... it will glue you to your pad and it will make you go red because once more you killed that little flower (while the most relaxing music ever is played in the background). I LOVE this game - it takes a while to master controls, but the better you become the more you will love the game. You want something more casual? Try out MOTORheat ... just try it out (unless you are a racing freak, then better skip it). Instead you could give Missile Escape a go ... Ohh - so many "not just farts and dates and massages ..." games are really good (to be fair - and a lot of those are also pretty much **** Just give them a chance.

Well I hope if you are the party responsible for making Square Off it sold well. I paid the buck for the game, played through it with some friends, and we all decided collectivelythat it's the best game ever made you can buy for a dollar. In fact that's kinda why I went looking through all the Indie games sifting through them trying to find more games as good as yours. From what people have said here I guess most people don't care about Indie Games much. It's true that there is a bunchof junk on there, but people don't give the games a chance just because it's not COD. Indie games must only have appeal to the crowd that's into classic/retro gaming, because kids that only play generic modern games don't understand them. Oh well if nothing else if it lands some talented people a job somewhere/ and or makes somebody a buck for crafting something different/ new I'm glad they made the sevice.

Thank you SauceCaptain, glad you enjoyed it. Also, thanks for creating this thread - I think you got us at least one extra sale :D So far it's sold about 10K units. 5K at $3 and 5K at $1 (since the start of June). In comparison to a lot of titles on XBLIG this is pretty damn good. We'll be releasing an in depth analysis of the sales data on our blog some time soon if anyone's interested in that sort of thing.

Even if nobody cares, a lot of people should. I am currently working on a game for XBLIG and even though there's a lot of crap games in there, some of them are really good (I hope mine will be on that group). Some games like Arkedo series, Shooter 1Up, Mamotte Senshi are actually very good and worth the money. Besides of that, good indie developers need support. It's incredibly hard to get to the market and publish a game... Once my game is finished, I'd be very glad to show it here and to see some people discussing about it, that's the fuel to keep working on such a harsh industry. :)

Interesting. I didn't even become aware of Indie games till I saw the Avatar one at some show by Microsoft on TV. Course I checked it out right away and was a bit overwhelmed, lol. I tried out a few and thought they were fun for what they were.

It's to bad that some of the better indie games aren't put on the Spotlight page on the Xbox via the peoples vote. It would remind me and other folks to check it out more often!

I buy and play the crap, because sometimes, they are not actually crap. I always have two conditions when buying an indie game. 1st, it has to be 80MSP, and 2nd, it has to be rated 4 stars or higher. This ensures that I am getting the best value for my money. I buy them because it lets the little guy become the big developer. It is these people, who are going to be making your games in 10-15 years. So, I bought... Avatar Ninja, fun game. Avatar Showsown, decent game. Avatar Wave: Snowball Fight, another decent game. Breath of Death VII, havent played much of it, but a lot of people think it to be good. I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!, one of the best game. Johnny Platform's Biscuit Romp, another decent game. Miner Dig Deep, fun little gimmicky game. NextWar: The Quest for Earth, the only indie game that I paid more than 80MSP for, and is the game that made me come up with that rule. Decent game, not for the price. Ophidian Wars: Opac's Journey, its different, havent played much. The Impossible Game, addictive and one of the best indies. The Shadows in the Underworld, a decent game. Yet Another Zombie Defense, was probably my crapiest game that I bought using my system. Game somehow got a 4, lol. Zombie Estate, a neat little fun 8bit pixel game. Good price and addictive game play. And then there is ZP2K, fun, just plain fun, and this is one of those indie games that I can actually find people online to play.

People should care about Indie games. It is a great way to give people a start in the gaming industry and maybe even make a dollar or two. Plus, the Indie developers aren't tied to companies like Activision who just want the same games made year after year. Saying that, I have not spent too much time on Indie games. I love my achievements so much to spend much time on games without them. I have probably bought 5-6 Indie games. Whenever I hear of a really good one, I usually go out and give it a try and maybe purchase it.

I won like 3 or 4 of them already, thanks to Twitter contests. What I like is that there are new Indie Games every day. What I don't like is that there are new Indie Games every day, lol. There's so many of them, I don't know which one to try out but at least they have those IGN picks, etc. and you can see the games ratings too to get an idea.

I've never cared for XBL Indie titles, the quality of them are far too low for me to care and I doubt I ever will, the really good Indie games end up as XBL Arcade titles anyway so I know what's good and what isn't before even trying the games out.

There are a few good ones like I Made a Game With Zombies In It, or Beat Hazard. The remaining majority doesn't deserve any attention, really.

There are plenty of great games on there, some of which are worth more than some Arcade games.

I tend to avoid Indie games now. I've spent over 1600 MS points in Indie games.

Well said and I concur 100%.

The indie games i have found interesting enough to warrant purchase are Breath of Death 7 and Platformance: Castle Pain, there are a few others i have downloaded to try but havnt had a chance to check out many of them yet simply due to time restrictions. I think its awesome that Microsoft is allocating the service to such player created content, companies like steam and valve wouldnt have gotten far without it (counter strike anyone?) and thats why you see it still so strongly supported today.

For any one refusing to try these titles your only limiting yourself, not everything has to be a triple a title, don't forget games should be fun first and foremost before all things, and the a majority of indie games i have tried are exactly that, fun, plane and simple.

I do think achievements would sell more of them as well, but achievements shouldn't be the sole purpose for gaming either in my opinion.

I've never cared for XBL Indie titles, the quality of them are far too low for me to care and I doubt I ever will, the really good Indie games end up as XBL Arcade titles anyway so I know what's good and what isn't before even trying the games out.

PPresentFortune
Believe me, that's not true... Microsoft (and probably any company) would prefer relying on companies that they have been wornking with or at least have a dozen of published games. We're talking about indies which don't have that support from any big company and are trying to get their game to the market to build that "credit" that's needed to reach XBLA or other major company. If you are outside of USA, Europe or Japan, it's even harder. Of course there are exceptions to the rule like World of Goo or Braid, but exceptions are exceptions just because they don't follow the rule.

Well I hope if you are the party responsible for making Square Off it sold well. I paid the buck for the game, played through it with some friends, and we all decided collectively that it's the best game ever made you can buy for a dollar.

GnomicStudios

Thank you SauceCaptain, glad you enjoyed it. Also, thanks for creating this thread - I think you got us at least one extra sale :D So far it's sold about 10K units. 5K at $3 and 5K at $1 (since the start of June). In comparison to a lot of titles on XBLIG this is pretty damn good. We'll be releasing an in depth analysis of the sales data on our blog some time soon if anyone's interested in that sort of thing.

Good for you guys if you can make a little money and that keeps you making games. From what I understand nearly every game on the service doesn't sell more than a dozen copies, so congrats, and I'll look for your next project.

I like them. Theres some great games there that are fun to play l

Nintendo_Man
What are you talking about? Theres trials for every indie game :?

What the Hell would that do? Seriously, what's up with this new generation of gamers that can't figure out their head from their anus unless there's an achievement for doing so? Achievements don't do anything. They're not worth anything. Having a lot of achievement points is just a good way of showing how much of your time you've wasted with your life.Achievements don't make a game better. They change NOTHING about the game. Most of them are earned just by playing most games normally, and the rest are just a bunch of minor challenges to artificially extend the amount of time you'll spend on the game.

If you need achievements just to justify playing a game, you are a sad, sad person.

i agree with you for saying that it's sad if you play for just the achievement points but other than that achievements are a good way to add replay value to a game imo

So much anger for nothing, just as an FYI my gamerscore is around 10-15k and ive never been an achievement whore but ill tell you this much, when it comes to arcade games, achievements are alot of fun to chase because they make u do things in the game you wouldnt normally do, aka add replaybility to the game, take it as challenges for each game and I enjoy completing them for arcade games, if that makes me a sad person then so be it, I think you're the sad person for getting so upset about what other gamers do.... If I had 100K+ gamerscore and was an achievement whore it would be a different story....but then again to each his own, you are no one to judge what everyone does with their gaming time

Dude, nobody's getting "angry" or "upset", honestly, stop feeling so threatened when people have a different opinion than yours. Seriously, why is it that whenever someone disagrees with your opinion, your response is "stop yelling at meeeeee, there's no reason to get angryyy waaaaaaah, I need to get outta here!!!"

Anyway despite what you're saying about not being an achievement whore, the fact that you wouldn't try some legitimately good indie games just because they don't have achievements makes you an achievement whore.
