Ok, here is my story and why I think the core system has a purpose... I bought my premium 360 the day it came out, a year later it crapped out and stopped displaying video, only sound. This was before the extended waranty microsoft just announced so I couldn't send it back in to be fixed, besides I didn't have the three red lights problem. So I figured i already had the hard drive, component cables and wireless controller from my premium 360, I decided to buy the core system from Best Buy, which ended up saving me $100. Luckily I bought the extended warranty from best buy because I have had to replace my core system twice (at no price to me because I bought the extended warrant) because of the three red lights. So I am currently on my fourth 360 and I have enough time left in my extended warrranty from BB to get two more core systems for free. In short, the core system does have a purpose, although I doubt this is the purpose they had in mind when they built it.
Oh, and I would reccommed the extended warrant from BB, the $40 is well spent. Especially because you dont have to wait a couple of months to get your 360 back from microsoft...you get a new one, no questions asked
