I have been thinking about upgrading my current 20 GB hard drive to either a 120 or 250 GB hard drive. On Ebay I notice that you can get hard drives there for like half of the price that it costs to get them from Microsoft at a game store. Would buying one of these hard drives and using them get my xbox banned? Thanks for any help.

chances are that with some of these auctions the user will have made the drive themselves - buying a laptop HDD of a matching model and flashing it to the correct details to mimic an official HDD. These drives are then recognised as a proper HDD by the console, whereas just putting a standard laptop HDD into the caddy will not work. Whether these can be detected by MS and your console banned, I don't know.

Yeah - the majority of them on ebay are "custom made" laptop HDD's that are then flashed with a file (I'm not naming which) from a "Legit" Xbox hard drive. Apparently they work, but since it's something you would be using for the life of your console, I wouldn't skimp just incase Microsoft does detect and ban them.

I recently upgraded my Xbox HDD and bought the 60GB starter pack since it was only $90 and came with 3 months of Xbox live. I'll never need 120GB and couldn't justify the $60 price difference. Just keep in mind that you can only get the Data transfer kit with the 120GB, otherwise you'll have to phone microsoft.

For 20GB you will likely get a genuine HDD - people didn't really go to any effort to make custom HDD until the much larger drives came out. I doubt any of the 60GB on ebay would be custom made either. You're only really likely to find them on 120GB sales.

Dude you wont get banned it's only a hard drive. They almost always ban people for hacking their consoles. And from my understanding most of those drives are actually authentic..make sure you read the auctions description carefully just in case.

Hey dudes, Rather than starting a new thread I thought I'd bump this and see if anyone has had any success with an eBay hard drive? Much appreciated!

I got a 20gig over the summer for 20 dollars from Hong Kong, and it did all right. You just have to be pickky about stuff like that when you buy off Ebay.

I bought a 250gb HDD off Ebay, I dont play online so I wasnt too worried, I just wanted it for all my vids and music etc. because the noise of the cd-drive is terrible. But it came with all the official microsoft stickers and lisencing stuff so I assume that it's real, it cost me about 100AUS, whereas here it's 190AUD for a preowned 120GB HDD from EB

Be careful when buying them. Most people on eBay aren't scammers, but when it comes to hard drives, people like to take the shell of one, and replace the insides with a custom laptop HDD or something. It won't ever ban you, but you will lose backwards compatibility since it isn't made specifically for Xbox 360. I bought my 250gb on eBay and it's an official hard drive. Just go ahead and buy one, and then make sure it's official, and if it ends up being a rip-off, then just get your money back.

People get banned for modifying the data on their harddrive not from buying or installing a new one.
