is the elite more reliable than the older versions? should i buy it only because i need a new 360? no hdmi and i dont really need a bigger hard drive either

Not it hasn't had any of the problems fixed, jst got some extra features. But apparently at the end of the year they are changeing the Elite edition to be more reliable or something.

Actually it is more reliable, the Elite has a new motherboard with fewer transistors (less heat).  Goodness do people think before they hit reply?  The newer premiums are more reliable than the older ones...

NO....If I were you I would hold off on getting an Elite. It's essentially the same exact hardware but with an added hdmi port and a bigger hard drive. Those features aren't bad but it will still be plague by the same problems as the core and premium. I think what you're referring to is the model that's suppose to run quieter, smoother, cooler etc. I haven't heard anything recent on that one. If your looking for increased reliability then wait.

hmmmm not really, they have been experimenting with using different drives since the console first launched but if you read up you will find that they are still dieing left and right.

Depends where you live if you're not in the USA you shouldn't need a bigger HDD; reason is outside you don't get the extra XBL downloadable content (HD movie trailers)

Well this information is coming from somebody with an Elite and had a Premium. I had the second launch version of the Premium. Got it about April 06, I had a few problems but it still worked fine. Sold it to a friend for a good price for both of us, and picked up the Elite almost 2 weeks ago. Now to start to answer your questions, one the 360 will scratch disc if you move the console from vertical to horizontal while a disc is inside and while running. Do not move your console while a disc is inside. Then you will have no worries. Two to answer the statement of the new drive, yes it does have a new drive in it. I am sure the newer 360 have the same drive, since MS stated they was using it. The problems with over heating and all that, if you take care of your stuff, keep it ventilated and free of Debee it will run good. I know there is that time when Murphy can overcome all preventive measures and mess things up. But generally take care of stuff it will be fine. And yes the 360 Elite does seem to be better built with the new mother board and reduction of some internal components like capacitors and transistor, it does run quieter, but the temp seems to be about the same. Which is no problem, revert back to the take care of your stuff. All and all I am happy with the Elite, but it is not for everyone. If your like me and download a lot of stuff then it will be good for you. I currently only have about 40g HDD left.

id like to see the post on that, cause from all the research i did, and the gamespot On The Spot, the only thing changed is the HDMI being built in. I have seen some of the pics of the new MoBo, but seeing as how the Processor has been the item with the finger pointed at it for causing the heat, and they are still putting in the 65nm processors, chances are, its just as hot.

I own the Elite, and its spitting out god awful heat. I put a tray/cups of ice in front of the  intake so its taking in cooler air, which actually has stopped the freezing screens.....oddly enough.....

Yes, i have an Elite that Freezes......join the club!

Of course there are a few subtle differences but nothing major. Right now on page 1 of this board there is a thread from a new Elite owner saying his 360 is freezing on him. Do you want me to link that?

Creating the elite version was a waste of time. Almost as bad as the Sega 32X addon.

Love my Elite, gave my Premium to my son.  The HDMI makes my games and movies look a little better on my DLP, this won't necessarily be the same for everyones TV.  Also my Elite is quieter than my Premium, go figure.

1 Elite doesnt constitute left and right.  And I disagree standcm12, as of now the problems do seem to be corrected.  The premiums coming out now appear to be more stable as well.  Its pretty much accepted that 3-4% failure rate is very common with anything mass produced.

Give it a few months then drop your doom and gloom theories but right now they simply dont hold water.

To those people who are telling me a way to solve the problem to my xbox 360 scrathing disks

1. No i never moved my 360, its horizontal, A LOT of breathing space, took care of it

2. My warrenty had expired a couple days before i had called 1-800-4-myxbox so i have to pay $160 or something like that to get it fixed,

3. This is my second console so i dont want to spend the $160 and then more on warrenty because im pretty sure it will just mess up again.

so i was wondering if i bought the elite, i wouldnt have to worry about any problems at all but listning to you guys, it seems like the elite is also not very reliable

My Elite runs much better than any of the 3 Premiums I previously owned, (they all died).  It runs quiter & cooler & I haven't had a single issue with it.

YES, but only if you have a 1080p tv. I have an elite and a 60'' 1080p tv. but,  the elite is about as reliable as any other 360. I myself have had some of the worst luck for 360s. I have had 4 break on me since launch in 05. When I got my elite it was DOA, no less then 3 hours of having it, it was a $500 paper weight. now with that said get an elite with a good warranty. The 360 my go down as the most loved, but worst built of all systems. I only continue to replace my busted 360s because 360 has the best games now.

Where are you getting that, everyone in this thread that said they have an Elite has said that it runs perfectly.  One person (trolling) is saying they are having issues which is simply not true.

Do what you want, but the elite is a smart buy, its not overheating, its not loud it appears to be stable.

I have an elite and I used to have a premium that I sold to my buddy for a good price. Well The elite seems to be quieter than my old premium. It does produce heat, but it seems a little cooler than my old premium. I don't think they are dying left and right. I did hear that there were some that died on launch day. I also heard that the elite also contains some of the same problems. Even though this is true the internals of an elite are different. You can go on llama.com and see for yourself. There are less transistors so that it runs cooler. They also put something on the gpu and cpu so it doesn't get detached from the motherboard. These changes aren't huge, but are significant. I personally feel that the elite is more reliable. I've had mine since launch and I haven't had any problems with it. Its a good system. I would reccomend buying the elite.

Why not just buy it?  You are being a true lemming by following what other's say instead of buying it yourself.

Take the opinions as everyone who bought one as a yes, and you will have your answer.

I got my 360 elite a few weeks ago and except for a few lag issues it works perfectly for me. I had my original premium since may of 06 and well it never gave me problems to the point where I had to send it in for replacement or bring it back to the store where I had a warranty(P.S don't get consoles from gamecrazy, when I inquired about possibly bringing my 360 in to get swapped for a newer one because mine was really starting to mess up, they pretty much turned me away even though my one year warranty had not yet expired) it still gave me alot of problems towards the end, some days it actually felt really hot around my hdtv even with air conditioning on really high. The elite hasn't given me any problems at all, does not get nearly as warm as the original, and has not given me really any major problem. But I guess if I did have to bring up some flaws that could have been improved a little bit it would have been the noise it still exports during gameplay and the fact that the power brick is just as big as the one with the premium, but I do recomend it along with a warrenty aswell.

My 360 scratched my disks too. So I bought an Elite and traded in my old 360. Then a week later it stopped reading disks. I got a warranty from Best Buy but I they never have any Elites. Now I'm missing out on the Halo 3 beta. I'd wait a while until 360's are more reliable for sure.

cant sell it on ebay because it doesnt really work and if i sell it at stores they only give $150 for it which sucks

Oh yeah if it's ruining your games get rid of it. When I traded it in at Gamestop I only got like $85 I think. It's pretty ridiculous.

cant sell it on ebay because it doesnt really work and if i sell it at stores they only give $150 for it which sucks

Good idea, you dont deserve an Elite anyway.  They are not unreliable, please stop trolling.

I have found my elite to operate faster than my premium, maybe its the new hard drive, but it boots up faster, loads my profile faster, no lag when switching blades, etc. The HDMI offers a better picture and the extra storage space is nice. For an extra $79 bucks the elite is worth it.

Actually it is more reliable, the Elite has a new motherboard with fewer transistors (less heat).  Goodness do people think before they hit reply?  The newer premiums are more reliable than the older ones...tkemory

yea and i heard they make a tad bit less noise

From what i heard, it's not worth getting it because you won't get the maximum resolution without the addition HD Dvd Player!!!

I got an Elite.  So far so good.  I noticed it downloads content a little bit fast.  Yes, if you got a nice tv, yes if you want to replace your old 360, no if the one you have is fine and you're fine with it.

id like to see the post on that, cause from all the research i did, and the gamespot On The Spot, the only thing changed is the HDMI being built in.

Yes, i have an Elite that Freezes......join the club!

yeah that must of sucked.

buying a system that you thought was better than the original was actually not.

 I feel your pain.

That is simply not true.  In order to get a native 1080P movie you need the HD-DVD add-on.
