Are those of you who have purchased this add on blown away by the picture quality difference for movies or is it just a minimal difference and not worth the purchase?

Only you can make that decision to be honest.  You will get a ton of people that will tell you its not worth it (most of them dont own the add-on).  I have it and it is a huge difference but it depends on the rest of your system.

I have a 56" Samsung 1080P DLP television so for me its a HUGE difference and totally worth it, especially after getting the Elite I am finally 1080P.

I did notice a significant difference.  King King, Batman Begins and Serenity being the best examples of the movies I own.  The HDDVD versions show details I didn't even notice in the regular DVD versions upscaled.

It very much depends on the movies that you buy...newer films tend to have better transfers and look crazy good...but the older films have transfers that, while look better than standard DVD, aren't a huge leap in picture quality...

i own an hd-dvd add-on and i love the picture, the only problem i have is the audio. i like to turn up movies pretty loud but the audio from this doesn't sound too hi-def, it sounds kinda muffled compared to dvd's with dts. although i did read somewhere (i don't have a link) that there was supposed to be an update for the hd-dvd drive on the 360 add-on that would allow other audio signals supported by hd-dvd (ie. DTS, DolbyTrueHD, DTS-HD, etc.) but i'm not to sure if that was a fact or rumor. this is just my opinion, so maybe you wouldn't really notice the difference, but i'm kind of finicky when it comes to audio.

If you have an HDTV then you will absolutely notice a difference.  Personally I prefer my Blu-Ray, but I have the HD-DVD drive as well & the picture quality is real good on a nice HDTV.

If it doesn't make a HUGE difference then your probably not using an HDTV.

HD movies are awesome.  It is almost painful to now watch a movie on DVD.  I also have a PS3 so I can watch as many movies in HD as possible.

If you have an HDTV and enjoy sci-fi and action movies it can really help bring out the special effects and CGI.  It can make some movies better than they were in a lower resolution because it is a little more immersive.  But there are still some movies that don't benefit from a better picture quality.  With an HD format comes doing your homework at places like avsforums or hidefdigest, etc...

I use it on my PC monitor using VGA, that way it upconverts even my regular DVD's. So yeah, in my opinion it's worth it.

It does 5.1.  I honestly can't tell the difference in HD-DVD and BR unless the BR title is using uncompressed audio.
