I have 3 broken 120 gb sitting next to me. My first one broke after a month so i called ms and they sent me a "new" 120 gb it was broken. I called them again and they sent me another one and it broke after a week of constant freezing. Finally I just put back on my launch 20 gb and it hasn't broke in 3 years. Now this is just my experience but i doubt yours will brake if it hasn't after three months.

On the other hand, my 3 year old 20GB HDD is working fine, surprised I've not filled this yet.

sounds like bad look, OR your xbox is doing something to break them. to the orig poster are you having hard drive problems or just wondering how long they last? hard drives can last for years and years without getting faults if used correctly and not physically damaged.

It can fail at any time

Hard drives have had little to no change in reliability in the last decade.

A new hard drive is just as likely to fail as a drive that's been going strong for 5 years.

Until it gives you problems don't worry about it

Don't worry about it, it should be fine for a while. You won't know really know when to replace it...but you shouldn't have to...

When it wont load or starts making noises

If you're afraid you'll lose game saves and all that jazz then what you do is grab a memory card for the console.

Unlike the hard drive a memory card is solid state. That means no moving parts and that means they're safe for your data

If you were already thinking of a hard drive drop a few bucks on a memory card and back up whatever you can. If and when the time comes that you unfortunately have to replace a drive all of your game data will be safe waiting for you
