Ok SO, I know the cable works because on the ps3 it works just fine

but when I plug it into the 360 from the hd av cable------> receiver there is no sound

in the options its set to dolby digital 5.1 so i know thats right, no sound what so ever.

Im using a av hd component cable going to my tv and then the optical to receiver,

could it be that the av is bad? its a pelican and has worked fine for over a year just recently got surround.

The HD AV cable has 6 cables to my knowledge. Are you sure you are using the correct cables?

Yes, but that has nothing to do with it, if if had none plugged up sound would still work if the optical cable was hooked up(which it is) im really getting a headache over this, im about to have to go buy a new damn component cable

just wondering - have you tried plugging the normal stereo plugs from the AV Component cable into the back of the TV or your receiver?

If you get sound from them then it sounds like it may be the optical plug itself in the AV Component cable which has gone..... (which is a bummer....)

Did you even figure out a solution to this problem. I'm having the same issue only mine didn't start until a month ago. I also have a PS3, which is connected thru the optical cable and the sound is perfect, but when I connect it to my 360, there's no sound on the menu and there's no sound on some movie parts during games. It's not the optical cable or the A/V cable--b/c I just upgraded to an Elite and I'm having the same problem. So frustrating... I've tried switching the digital options on the 360 to digital stereo only, and that seems to work... but then I don't get the full effect of the "surround sound," which to me defeats the purpose. Then when I switch it to 5.1 there's no sound again--MS has done something. I've tried just about everything from switching cables, to 360 menu options, to pressing all buttons possible on my ss. I don't get it... 5.1 works great on the PS3, but not on the 360??? Wtf is up w/ that? Is there an addition cable or something that MS wants us to purchase? Idk, I've given up on trying to figure this one out by myself.

Don't know what to tell you. It sounds like you have everything set up correctly. Here's the setup page at xbox.com. Connect to Digital Audio I just hooked up mine to an optical cable and it worked fine. Please don't turn this into a System Wars thing.
