the problem is too much dust inside of his console causing it to run too hot....putting a towell around the console will make it run even hotter and almost certainly kill it.
try to get some canned air and spray through the sides of the console like i did in the video...

dust=causes electronic equipment to run hotter than being dust free, the reason you dont see dust flying out of my 360 because i clean it all the time, but i guarantee if you spray through the holes like i did in the youtube link you will see dust fly out....because the side intake holes pull in dust but supposed to be cool air to keep the 360 from running too hot and dying....the holes in the back of the console is the fans blowing out the hotair....start by spraying the side holes...and then shoot out the outake holes.
my pc video card will die if i dont keep it dust free because it will run too hot because of the dust exceed the maximum stable temps and die....i suggest just do this even when if you have to get a new 360 helps prolong the life of your stuff.
I also made my own forum post regarding this issue so you can always ask for questions in there too.
Before moving on: IF YOU STILL HAVE A WARRANTY ON YOUR XBOX 360 THEN SEND IT IN TO MICROSOFT BECAUSE THEY WILL SEND YOU A NEW ONE WITH A NEW WARRANTY!!!!
If you did decide to open your 360 for some reason or your warranty is out and you are willing to repair your xbox 360 then click on the link provided but instead of using the exact materials on this site use the ones listed below
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/ring_of_light_x-clamp_fix.htm
The materials you will need to replace the x clamps on the cpu and gpu. . . .
8 5mm by 16mm pan head screws (Home Depot)
32 5mm steel washers, 1mm thick (Home Depot)
16 #10 nylon washers (5mm), 1mm thick (Home Depot)
torx 10 screwdriver (Home Depot)
torx 8 screwdriver (Home Depot)
13/64 inch drillbit (Home Depot
a decent powered drill (you should have one)
optional: goo gone, alcohol, articsilver thermal compound (online)
I just want to let you guys know that you shouldn't hesitate when it tells you to drill into your case because remember you are trying to help keep your cpu and gpu from loosening and the only way you can do that is by putting in some sturdy screws. Another important note I want to make is that it didn't even put any new thermal compound on since i dont have a credit card which makes it so i cant buy stuff online. I used some of the old thermal paste that was stuck to the cpu and gpu heatsinks and plopped it on the chips. I did however still do the step to overheat the gpu since the thermal paste had to reform to my heatsinks.
Good luck with your repairs!!!!
