OK, in asking for a fix to the fact that my copy of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion was going really slow all of a sudden, someone suggested that I try this Storage Device Maintenance thing where I select the HDD and put in X X LB RB X X, supposedly this clears all game patches only, but I saw a forum where it is supposed to slow down the drive speed to make it quieter. Is any of this true? And if so would slowing down the drive speed speed up the game? It doesn't make sense to me, but maybe someone more qualified knows a bit more about it?

There are myriad so called ways to clear the cache, but as far as I know, none of them actually do anything. The most popular, back when I was still playing ESIV, was to hold X when the game is loading.

What can really slow down Elder Scrolls IV is too many extra items in the game world. If you dupe items often, you'll most certainly find the game slowing down.

Best fix I know is to just switch off and load it back up.

the memory wipe does work, but I havn't noticed much speed up. I used it because for Kingdom Under fire there is a patch that limits the amount of times you can upgrade an item to 20 and lowers potion strength by like 40% or something. So when I want to upgrade something I use that wipe code you got, then up my weapons and such then repatch the game so I can play online. Personally i really think RPGs especially but all games when you are asked to update the game, a list of changes should be supplied just like with computer games. anyway, i've heard of no real way to change the speed... a friend of mine god a major in computer science and transferred the bios from the HDD to a 120gig 10,000 RPM rapter drive and hot wired that. That sure as heck ups your system speed... but I really don't recommened lol

I tried everything I know, when I noticed this, I had accidentaly duped one sword, and downloaded BF Bad Company, now I deleted BF demo, deleted my saves after the dupe, and reloaded before it, and It is still slow! I just don't get why it started this all of a sudden!

Im 100% the stuttering your experiencing in Oblivion is just how the game is. I own it and I get that to. Read the review on GS, GregK states its got technical issues.

Ive never actually tried that maintaince trick but I wouldnt even bother.

Well, duping one weapon won't cause issues. The game does have some frame rate issues here and there all on its own though...

My friend was a maniac when it came to duping, more than once he tossed 10,000+ of an item down the Blade's mountain... just to chuckle in glee at the massive river of watermelons, skulls, swords, ect... flowing down the mountain. It would slow down to seconds per frame... and leave his game in limbo for up to half an hour, but his game was still fine after he either left the area or switched to a new save.

So... I can't really say why you're having, what sounds like, such terrible framerate issues.. Sorry. :(
