Hello, I am hopefully getting an Xbox 360 (Elite) for Christmas and I was wanting to know some tips on how to take care of it, etc. I am concerned about the risk of it overheating, and many other things. So, hopefully you guys could help me out here!

And also, the only place I can put it is in an Entertainment center. Would putting a fan right in front of it help? (I've heard that if you put it directly into the vents, it'll have no effect or it could just blow-in the air that it already blew out.)

Hello.

My Advice to all those fellow owners of Xbox 360, especially here in the Philippines:

1. put a mini-electric fan behind it

2. elevate the console (so the air from the bottom will be cool.)

- have my console elevated using 2 bricks of foam

Xbox 360 heats up really fast especially in the tropics... use this to avoid meltdown...

this may help too:

1. try not to get addicted

-- being addicted, you'll tend to play really long hours, which will shorter the lifespan of your controller and may add wear&tear to the console

*hehehe personally when i play, i play 'til i fall asleep.... don't be like me he he he

BS. Seriously. I've read a lot about the 360, and that just sounds made-up.

Ok heres what to do....or atleast heres what I did and it worked for me. Im from the tropics also so i know ur concern for overheating.

1) DO NOT move the 360 while a game is in it.

2) Keep the 360 in the coolest place possible. (mine is in my room and i have A.C in my room) As ur game is gonna be in an entertainment centre im not sure how u will keep it cool.

3) Someone mentioned above to only play it for 2 hours.....:|.....Thats rubbish. Play it whenever u want. Once its in a cool enough place it will be fine. I sometimes play mine for 6...7...even 8 hours at a time.

4) Every now and again clean the dust away.

Hope this helped.

And one more thing....IT DOES NOT MATTER IF IT IS VERTICAL OR HORIZONTAL. I had mine both ways and never had a disk scratched. Just make sure the game is stable where ever it is.

First of all there is no magic formula for keeping your 360 in working and RROD-less operation. The hardware is/was faulty and if you are lucky enough to get a console that is not faulty then you should not have any problems. People seem to think that placing it here or there or turning it sideways or upright seem to have a bearing on the life of their system. It doesn't.The problem was/is with the hardware and if you get a lemon it will break regardless of what you do. I mean c'mon, is it really that difficult to care for a console? Keep it ventilated and don't go swimming while wearing it as a bathing suit. Basically just usecommon sense and you should befine. It's pretty much that simple. At any rate,it is probable that the console that you get (sweet Christmas present btw) will have the new GPU and heatsync which should greatly reduce the likelihood of you getting the RROD.

Exactly. I babied my 360 since day one, and it's crapped on me twice. It's all about whether or not you get lucky pretty much. You shouldnt have to jump through hoops to keep it working... if it's going to break down, it's going to break down regardless.

Well... the more you play the console, the sooner it will break down, as with any electronic equipment. That advice is pretty much irrelevant though. It's not like it will break in a year if you play everyday.

okay, the easiest way to keep the Xbox 360 working is to not be a douchbag and drop it, knock it around (especially when it is running), or set it up in a dangerous are. The Xbox 360 tends to be more sensitive than most systems, but doesnt require special attention. Many people who get the red ring of death are simply morons who cannot touch something for five mnutes without breaking it. (i have friends like this, its very annoying.) Just set it up where it cant fall, can get air, and dont leave it on 24/7.

I've been lucky.. I bought one from the first batch and watched others with all these problems. I've had mine vertical and horizontal, played it for hours and hours more than a few times and never had more of a problem than say it freezing up for some odd reason and needing a reset. (very rare) Other than that it's been great and I'm not particulary careful. Just don't do something stupid like block air from the intake holes. (ex. put in on carpet) Also if it's sitting in a cabinet and you close the door because it's a wireless controller etc. Obviously it will get alot hotter being in a mostly enclosed enviroment. Common sense is your friend.

(knock on wood, I've been expecting this sucker to fail for some time now... I had already sold myself on buying a newer one sometime with the cooler chip / hdmi when needed.)

Thanks for all of the help guys. By the way, I've had my Ps2 for 6 years now without ANY problems! :)

Also, do the 360s come with the warranty, or do you have to ask for one?

Any more tips would be great as well!

MS gives you a 3 year one and all you do is you call up the 1800-myxbox and ship it
