I'm wonderingis a cooling fan necessary?(such as the newer Intercooler TempSmart) Also, would putting a xbox 360 on the bottom shelf of a tv stand be that bad, there is no back to the bottom shelf so ventilation is avialbe. Please answer my questions thank you. :)

You are going to get mixed reviews of the InterCooler, Personally I own one and it has been great! used to get 3 FLASHING red rings but that has stopped since I got it. Also invest in some canned air and spray the hell out of you 360. Hold it up to the light and see the cloud of dust when you blow it out. Amazing! What to watch for w/ those intercoolers is you power brick heat not you actual 360's heat. If your brick runs warm but not burning you should be fine. Good luck!

DOnt bother with 3rd party coolers, they just add to the problem. If you can keep it in a ventilated spot that is also dust free youve got as good a chance as anyone. Just make sure you do the tribal dance of luck everytime you turn it on.

if you put the console on its side then it should be Ok, it depends on the model you have because the fans are inside will be better on newer models

If my idea don't work buy the cooler

OK thank you everyone. I was researching more and I found out the intercooler EX has caused alot of problems but how about the newest one the intercooler Tempsmart, runs on its own power from the wall not the 360s power. Also what is your opinon on putting it on a wooden tv bottom shelf in which the back is open but the sides have wood walls. Thank you!

I personally use one of the USB coolers, and don't have a problem with it. However, the most important factor for cooling, cooler added on or not, is to give the system space for air flow. Anything less than a foot on each side IMO isn't enough space.

I really think some people worry more about airflow then they do actually playing games...sheeesh hehe. Just play the system and enjoy it, no matter what you do, if your meant to get the RRoD, you'll get it, period.

That's how I feel lol...everytime I'm done playing I check the back of my 360. By the way do you know where in Canada RRoD 360's get shipped to? I think someone said Mississauga (I'm from Toronto).

I have not found an end all solution to overheating. However there are many steps you can take to help prolong the life of your console. Heres what i did: http://ellisonsmp3repair.com/about_us I have two additional fans that work in conjunction to help keep my consoles running up to 30 degrees F cooler than normal. The internal fan I installed sucks air in and helps the stock fans grab additional cooler air. The out side fan does two things. 1) it blows any hot \ warm away from the console and 2) It blows cooler air into the top cooling fan to keep the warm air from the stock fans from recirculating. One of these xboxes I bought on the launch date and have never had any overheating issues (yet). These consoles run between 4 and 12 hours EVERY DAY!!!! If you keep them clean, dust really isn't an issue.

i think this is a good idea. buy like two hockey pucks and put them under ur 360 so it will be lifted a little, that will give the air holes on the bottom to work. don't buy the fans it's pointless because there is a fan already there why put another one over it.

no dude. as long as you keep your 360 in a well ventilated spot, your good if you call the repair center, they will tell you that you should not use those attach on coolers to your 360 they can help the 360 over heat because then the power has to go through that cooler then to the xbox.. it should be cool like in a room with an exceptable room temperature and well don't put your 360 on the floor mainly or on top, or right next to your tv or something like that.. the heat will get to it, I didn't know it at the time, but that is how I got my first RROD

Dont bother with the intercooler or some other external fan. it voids your warranty and the one i got that came with the Nyko batteries and charger made it so the console wouldnt even turn on with it attached, so I threw it out.

Just be glad current 360s are quiet and cooler. Mine is the old RROD-prone kind that is as loud as a turbine. And it hasnt died... yet lol

Keeping your 360 well ventilated will NOT ensure that you are rrod free as my 360 did just that. After looking into the cause of the three seperate errors my 360 developed i decided to open it up and deal with the problem directly.

Firstly, your 360 is better off laying flat, as most of these problems are graphics-chip related and sitting it flat will allow very slightly better contact with the heatsink providing its cooling.

If you want to get around graphical twiches (mine lost all display whilst still giving me sound) I suggest you pin that heatsink to the graphics chip in any way you can. I removed the heatsink and applied some new thermal paste, tightened up the x-clamps (which hold the gpu hsf down) and then wedged four small 2penny towers (covered with electricians tape) between the heastink and the case. This pushed the heatsink down onto the gpu and ive had no problems since. If you want to take it one step further i suggest you cut a small hole in the "top" or "side" of the housing and place your dvd drive outside of the main case, thus allow cool air to come in right next to your heatsink (through the cavity let by the dvd drive). You could even make an air funnel out of plastic or cardboard to funnel the air across the heatsink.

Hope this helps.

Yes its Missisauga....I know from experience. I am living in the GTA, and the turn around period was only about a week for me.
