Might be. Microsoft recommends the box to be placed in a wee ventilated area.

Would purchasing a small fan and putting it back there help?

I think you should move it a little to the left more. The hard drive side doesn't have air vents but the opposite of that do.

Thats perfectly fine for ventilation. You have no real reason to worry at all.

You dont need to give it THAT much space dude lol just as long as theres enough space to allow the heat to be vented out the console and disappated in the air. About 5cm at the HD side and opposite side.

Though 360 does generate a lot of heat through normal play so it youre one of those gamers who practically plays none stop then its going to over heat no matter how much ventilation you give it. And yes a cooling fan would help but on the elite aint really that desperate

I have my 360 lead down, I made a lil stand for it to site on, there are too fan holes underneath the console try not to block them up, I also try to keep my room cool either open the window or by putting my lil electric fan on but dont put it right next to the console as you dont want it to get cold.

i think it will be fine. my 360 is upright and has plenty of space around it for ventilation. never had a problem.

I have my launch 360 (well Jan 06) sitting horizontally and I added little sticky feet to the bottom of it so that it's approx 1" off the shelf so that the bottom holes get air. I've never had a problem with it. There are many times it runs 8-10 hours at a time with multiple players.
