If you look after them , for example not leaving them on when your not playing them etc. , then you should be OK , although if you do get problems , your warranty should cover them , oh , and if you get RROD and have no warranty , they repair it free of charge :)
I've had my 360 since 2006 and have had to buy a new AV cable and it's had RROD twice. It's currently being repaired for that 2nd RROD. I don't think keeping it ventilated and cooled is going to help it stay alive as mine and my friends have been well ventilated and died anyway. A couple of my friends have never got RROD but the majority have. The way I see it is it either breaks or it doesn't. It's all about luck.
I've considered selling it for a PS3 or a Wii but there's really not much I want on those consoles compared to the games I want on 360. The 2008 line up in my opinion is just so good that I'll put up with RROD. Still, **** Microsoft.
systems bought now are far more reliable thanks to improvements on the hardware cooling.
i do think problems are SOMETIMES exaggereted - how people can go through half a dozen 360's in a year is beyond me. i dont think anyone could be that unlucky - there must be some element of contributory negligence e.g. not giving the unit space to breathe or something similar.
i have had mine since a few months after launch, and it did RROD last year but it was fixed gratis and has been beefed up on the cooling. it has not crashed once since i got it back. the only downside is that it sounds like a chinook lol
overall its a fantastic system, with a great selection of games and the elite is cheaper than PS3 at the present
Here's how I see it, in reference to a pre "Falcon" unit:
You should look for a "Falcon" system. Basically, look on the back of the box for a 175W power brick rating. You should buy your console from somewhere that replenishes it's stock frequently otherwise you run a high risk of receiving a unit that has sat in a warehouse for months.
Don't buy it used. You may want to avoid buying online too. Retail shops will probably have smaller stocks. Also, people still buy warranties in fear of it failing so stock shouldn't sit around long. Retail is probably the best option.
Bottom line is, a new system should be much more reliable as far as the RRoD goes. As for anything else going faulty, it's probably the same as an old system but those kind of failures aren't typically common.

lol that's the way I see it too...I got RROD on saturday, and almost all of my friends who have a 360 have gotten RROD
I'm on my second 360 in 2 1/2 years and I baby it a lot. First time it RROD within 9 months. I think my second one is about to now. The disc drive, internet connection, and processor are acting up.
I have to say I am a little dissapointed in the 360 overall. I have had many custom PC's, Xbox, Nintendo's, etc. I have never had to be as cautious and mindful of their upkeep as I have had to with the 360. It seems that not matter how careful I am there is a good chance it will fail anyway.
With that being said, I think MS has really stepped up to fix the hardware problems. Despite what I have seen on the forums I have never had a problem with their customer service. They are always friendly and eager to help. They don't give near as much grief as they could and if Bill Gates really wanted, to a certain extent, he could just tell everybody 'tough luck'. But they seem to want to make it as easy as they can for you and give you the benefit of the doubt when it comes to repairs. I have called twice on my most recent 360 and both times they offered to fix it for free although it wasn't quite broken.
Still. If I had to do it over again I would have bought a PS3.
I used to love my 360 but everytime I got really good online with my favorite games it went down on average every 4 months. I must admit playing for long hours all the time but I played because it is the best console in the world. I purchased the PS3 and have sold my 360 with all the accessories:cry: I am a xbox supported but hate having to send my console in I went through a total of 6 RROD I take great care of my electronics. I purchased my console during launch and that may be the problem alone but have hear stories of the newer consoles going down too. I like my PS3 but do not love it like I did my 360 and it will be sad I will have the miss Gears Of War 2. Hopefull I can get a run through with my friends console during winter break on casual to get through quick and stay up on the whole story.
Yes 360's break easily but it is the best console in the world.
I would say it is common, but I probably wouldn't say it breaks "easily". It took about two weeks for my bro to get his back after he sent it in for the RRoD. It was really easy (they sent packing stuff and everything).
I think that the 360 is such an amazingly fun console that it is worth the inconvenience (because that is all it really is) of it breaking down.
The amount of RRoD problems are really exaggerated. As long as you keep your 360 in an open area so you can get proper cooling, then your 360 will last for several years. More than half the RRoD stories you read on GS are either false, or the person abused their 360 by having the colling vents blocked or moved it during gameplay.-Sphere-
How do you know? did you go to thier house and see that their 360 didnt have the rrod on it? omg i hate people who act like they know what theyre talking about. also you should be able to move ur 360 around somewhat during gameplay and it not get a rrod... and also microsoft is stupid because they didnt put a good enough cooling system on it the first OR the second time (360 elite) so yes the 360 is most unreliable (my friend got the rrod and he doesnt leave his on and has it in an open area)

But, I personally have been throgh the RROD 5 times, (Once I sent in my xbox for RROD, the one I got back had RROD when I set it up and I had to do the whole process over, lol) and I take great care of my Xbox 360. It is just one of those things that may happen with the console.
It does not "Break", it is just an overheating issue.
