AlSharid

If you look after them , for example not leaving them on when your not playing them etc. , then you should be OK , although if you do get problems , your warranty should cover them , oh , and if you get RROD and have no warranty , they repair it free of charge :)

I've had my 360 since 2006 and have had to buy a new AV cable and it's had RROD twice. It's currently being repaired for that 2nd RROD. I don't think keeping it ventilated and cooled is going to help it stay alive as mine and my friends have been well ventilated and died anyway. A couple of my friends have never got RROD but the majority have. The way I see it is it either breaks or it doesn't. It's all about luck.

I've considered selling it for a PS3 or a Wii but there's really not much I want on those consoles compared to the games I want on 360. The 2008 line up in my opinion is just so good that I'll put up with RROD. Still, **** Microsoft.

systems bought now are far more reliable thanks to improvements on the hardware cooling.

i do think problems are SOMETIMES exaggereted - how people can go through half a dozen 360's in a year is beyond me. i dont think anyone could be that unlucky - there must be some element of contributory negligence e.g. not giving the unit space to breathe or something similar.

i have had mine since a few months after launch, and it did RROD last year but it was fixed gratis and has been beefed up on the cooling. it has not crashed once since i got it back. the only downside is that it sounds like a chinook lol

overall its a fantastic system, with a great selection of games and the elite is cheaper than PS3 at the present

LOOK HERE... At first there was a lot of problems and everyone who played 360 24/7 got RROD because 360 is so great it makes you play sooo much. You get a 1 year warranty with MS but you can probably get 2 years PRP with Best Buy. So all this you hear about the RROD, they're not new consoles. THIS IS COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO SPENDS MORE TIME ON 360 than average(probably). I bought the 360 what will be 2 years ago in SEPT. My first 2 consoles got RROD within 6 months, but i didn't care, i had Best Buys PRP warranty, so i just brought it in and they handed me a brand new one. Well i would also be playing my 369 ALOTTT and hotboxing my room with smoke, so pretty much blowing smoke right into it all the time. So i'm now on my 3rd 360 and have probably had it since SEPT. I play it and have it on for ATLEAST 10 hours a day and still smoke around it all the time. I've never had any problems on this one and it's not even the newest ones out, it doesn't have HDMI on the back. GO GET IT1

i also know plenty of people who have never had problems. I also believe that an arcade game Hardwood Spades which had some online issues would freeze up all the time if people would start it when there was others in the room. So it would freeze ALOT and i'd be playing it a lot, so i think that may have factored to why the other 360s went so fast.

Here's how I see it, in reference to a pre "Falcon" unit:

  • Every unit manufactured before Q4 2007, has a good chance of failing early
  • The cooler you keep it i.e vertical, open space, hard flat surface, the longer it may last
  • They all have design flaws - the main RRoD issue is a warped motherboard from CPU/GPU heat output
  • They all use cheap quality components - there's a possibility something else may go wrong with your system i.e DVD drive failing etc.
  • Quality control is suspect - the 2 systems I've been through ran quite hot with a very warm side panel (where the motherboard is closest), yet my friend has a launch unit that runs stone cold. Lucky ***...

You should look for a "Falcon" system. Basically, look on the back of the box for a 175W power brick rating. You should buy your console from somewhere that replenishes it's stock frequently otherwise you run a high risk of receiving a unit that has sat in a warehouse for months.

Don't buy it used. You may want to avoid buying online too. Retail shops will probably have smaller stocks. Also, people still buy warranties in fear of it failing so stock shouldn't sit around long. Retail is probably the best option.

Bottom line is, a new system should be much more reliable as far as the RRoD goes. As for anything else going faulty, it's probably the same as an old system but those kind of failures aren't typically common.

I wouldn't worry about it breaking. I have had my X360 since the launch day and it just broke about 3 months ago. Customer service was fairly helpful (except the lady was talking beastly fast) and the repair process was very easy. It is all worth it to have the awesome selection of X360 games available to me! I'd say get it based off all the great games and not worry about breaking your xbox.

If you bought one new, you would not have any problems whatsoever. My launch console has never got RROD! Don't listen to people who say theres has broken more than twice. They are straight up lying to you. Plus, if it did happen, there is a warranty.

no you don't have to be lucky. For it to get RROD you have to be unlucky. My friend had his from launch and it got RROD a couple of months ago. So 3 years, no one even knows if PS3's or Wii's will be able to last up to 3 years. They all might start dying, so stop all this i'm about to sell it in because you will regret it right away.

I'm on my second 360 in 2 1/2 years and I baby it a lot. First time it RROD within 9 months. I think my second one is about to now. The disc drive, internet connection, and processor are acting up.

I have to say I am a little dissapointed in the 360 overall. I have had many custom PC's, Xbox, Nintendo's, etc. I have never had to be as cautious and mindful of their upkeep as I have had to with the 360. It seems that not matter how careful I am there is a good chance it will fail anyway.

With that being said, I think MS has really stepped up to fix the hardware problems. Despite what I have seen on the forums I have never had a problem with their customer service. They are always friendly and eager to help. They don't give near as much grief as they could and if Bill Gates really wanted, to a certain extent, he could just tell everybody 'tough luck'. But they seem to want to make it as easy as they can for you and give you the benefit of the doubt when it comes to repairs. I have called twice on my most recent 360 and both times they offered to fix it for free although it wasn't quite broken.

Still. If I had to do it over again I would have bought a PS3.

I think it mainly depends on the user and how long at a time they play. The people that play it all day without turningit off are gonna have it happen more frequently just because the amount of heat from so much time on it. There not pose to be left on all day which i have some freinds that do that. Just leave it on and then they watch tv...

I used to love my 360 but everytime I got really good online with my favorite games it went down on average every 4 months. I must admit playing for long hours all the time but I played because it is the best console in the world. I purchased the PS3 and have sold my 360 with all the accessories:cry: I am a xbox supported but hate having to send my console in I went through a total of 6 RROD I take great care of my electronics. I purchased my console during launch and that may be the problem alone but have hear stories of the newer consoles going down too. I like my PS3 but do not love it like I did my 360 and it will be sad I will have the miss Gears Of War 2. Hopefull I can get a run through with my friends console during winter break on casual to get through quick and stay up on the whole story.

Yes 360's break easily but it is the best console in the world.

I would say it is common, but I probably wouldn't say it breaks "easily". It took about two weeks for my bro to get his back after he sent it in for the RRoD. It was really easy (they sent packing stuff and everything).

I think that the 360 is such an amazingly fun console that it is worth the inconvenience (because that is all it really is) of it breaking down.

The amount of RRoD problems are really exaggerated. As long as you keep your 360 in an open area so you can get proper cooling, then your 360 will last for several years. More than half the RRoD stories you read on GS are either false, or the person abused their 360 by having the colling vents blocked or moved it during gameplay.-Sphere-

How do you know? did you go to thier house and see that their 360 didnt have the rrod on it? omg i hate people who act like they know what theyre talking about. also you should be able to move ur 360 around somewhat during gameplay and it not get a rrod... and also microsoft is stupid because they didnt put a good enough cooling system on it the first OR the second time (360 elite) so yes the 360 is most unreliable (my friend got the rrod and he doesnt leave his on and has it in an open area)

Early on Yes, now not so much. I had an hardware failure 4 times, but no problems for quite some time now. It is sad however that it took them 4 times to fix it right.

I have an Xbox with the Falcon chip and yesterday it was on for more than TWELVE HOURS because I was downloading the EndWar Beta and I haven't had a hiccup from it at all today or yesterday. I'm pretty sure they fixed it. Unless you stick it in an old drawer or something while playing.

RROD was more prevalent on the older versions of the Xbox 360, it does not happen to much now. But, I personally have been throgh the RROD 5 times, (Once I sent in my xbox for RROD, the one I got back had RROD when I set it up and I had to do the whole process over, lol) and I take great care of my Xbox 360. It is just one of those things that may happen with the console.

It does not "Break", it is just an overheating issue.

My reply is going to echo what a lot of people have said. It seems that many of the problem swith RROD and 360s breaking down in general have been fixed. I bought mine in July 2006 and it went down in December 2006 for RROD. The replacement that they sent has been going strong ever since. A lot of the issues started to clear up around 2007, so you should be alright at this point.

Well, call BS if you want but one of my buddies from work will be on #7 since launch. Technically, only five "broke" cuz the sixth one he sent in was only cuz the refurb they sent him back was the wrong region, not broken but not acceptable. I know two guys who've had to return Elite's and one who's Halo ed. ring rolled him. The problem isn't going away, that's what the warranty is for. You gotta hand it to M$ though, while they may have introduced the console with the biggest failiure rate in the history of gaming they are also the only people who could have pulled it off & still have so many followers/fanboy's. I love when people say "it's not as bad as you think" or the always funny "RROD is a hoax", visit the other console/handheld tabs & count how many have "broken ____ threads". I'd personally love to not be bound by the annual price of live, or be made to accept the fact that before the next gen I'll probably go through two more 360's... But Gears & Viva Pinata are that damn good- that's all there is to it. Consoles & hanhelds are like Pokemon, gotta catch 'em all.
