Sony doesn't own Blu-ray. The Blu-ray Disk Association does, of which Sony is one of 9 founding members. So If Microsoft wanted Blu-ray they would be paying royalties to the Disk Association, not Sony directly, but possibly indirectly.sony owns blu ray so it is highly unlikely

actually theirs a rare change that next xbox will support blue ray because few months back one of ppl from the xbox department was talkin about it it said basically we have no attention of using blue ray. we believe blue ray is not best for gaming but blue ray is best for movies. they are looking into something else for gaming. go look it up few months back it was on a lot of gaming websites
Maybe Microsoft will develop their own game disc to compete with blu-ray or whatever Sony uses next gen. HDDVD may be caput, but there is nothing stopping Microsoft from using their funds to speed the disc-space R & D along a little bit, right?
Yeah, I mean I am fine with DVD yet. I remember reading about Blu-ray in the official Playstation Magazine a few years back, when it was in development....supposedly the discs are made much more cheaply than the HDDVD, despite having more space. The insides of them is like...papery... So, perhaps Blu-ray will backfire one of these days anyway.I dont see blu-ray coming to the next XBOX. Not really much of a demand for blu-ray.

I don't see them including or offering Blu-ray as an add-on for the next Xbox. But I will say there was this talk of another DVD disk format that could hold large amounts of data similar to that of a Blu-ray disk. That may be a alternative for Microsoft. Or who knows, maybe they'll use the no longer HD-DVD as a source to offer developers the space they need and continue to depend on Xbox LIVE & NetFlix streaming as a main source of people watching hi-def movies/shows. I think this is the main hurtle Microsoft will be trying to get over with the Next-Xbox is what drive they'll use.will the next xbox support blu ray or it will be and ad-on feature(like previous hd-dvd)??

Microsoft has already said they will NEVER use blu-ray because there is no point of blu-ray disk's in gaming, no company is going to make a game that will use 50 Gigs of memory, the game would be in production for 10 years and cost more money then it would ever make, and i know some fanboy is gonna come in here and try saying metal gear solid 4 used the entire blu-ray disc but no....it didnt
microsoft need find out about movies because playing movies on their system is huge ya they got streaming and there own video market but ppl buy movies on disc and pretty much in few years blue ray will be only movie disc option k2theswiss
Blue ray isn't going to take over until it gets a lot closer to the price of DVD's.

umm ooo 10 extra bucks for hd best looking movies on blue ray and blue ray is the rage. those ppl who buy movies is the ones who want best . i think buying movies is the most stupidest thing because u going watch it once maby twice and if u watch it 3 it's just because borem or friend comes over and they want to watch it what a waste of 30 bucks when i could rent it for 5 bucks and if i really wanna watch again later i go rent again iam still lower then the price tag of itActually Microsoft has its own stake in Blu-ray, from what I remember the codec technology came from the Media Player format for HD. So in theory Microsoft already gets a cut of each blu-ray move that is stold (probably not much, but some). (thats movies, not games)
I think Microsoft well HAVE to put in a Blu-ray player in the next one.
1. Its going to be the new format. For the next xbox to really be a "media center" its going to have to play HD movies! And because Microsoft didn't invest enough in HDDVD (which was better) they are stuck with the format that everybody is going to have. I mean how many PS3's sold just because it was the cheapest blu-ray player!
2. They can still put games on a different format if they want, but that just makes it tought for developers to put the game on some new format (when they are already going to be putting it on Blu-ray for PS3-4. There is been talk from Sony to put Movies and Games on the same Blu-ray disc! (Cost more then a game or a movie, but cheaper then buying both). I don't know if I see this compeltly working (Maybe a digital copy of the movie that can be played in the PS3 or computer). but it brings up another reason to go bigger is better.
3. The hope I think is that all movies (and games) would be downloaded/streamed. But that won't happen. If we are talking about trying to fit a game on Blu-ray (50 gb) nobody is going to download a 50 gb game! (or 30gb, let a lone some 10gb game).
The only hold back of Microsoft for Blu-ray is the price. Its still to much to add it into a player (the reason why the PS3 still costs so much). Once the drive comes down in price, then the Xbox1080P will be out!
I couldn't care less if the next Microsoft console has a Blu-Ray player in it considering I buy a gaming console for games.

Onlive comes out later this year and it doesnt take disc's and you wont have to download anything, the games are all streamed

umm ooo 10 extra bucks for hd best looking movies on blue ray and blue ray is the rage. No offense but your sounding kind-of ignorant, at this point people should take even 10 bucks seriously depending on the situation others could be in right now. Some people may want the "ultimate experience" when watching a movie but to most (correct me if I'm wrong) it's not a big and definately not worth an extra $10 per movie.unless they come up with a cheap alternative that is both comparable in size and better in speed I don't think MS will use anything but the Blu-ray. MS is not in the founding members of the DVD format and they still use it. It's gonna be the same with blu-ray. The only thing I can see happening is maybe have flash drives take over since they're faster than a DVD/Blu-ray but theyre quite expensive with high capacities.

I see it happening about the same time a Chevy Corvette comes factory with a "hemi". HAHAHAHA!!!! EXACTLY!!!! Xbox360 will never get Blu-Ray. Sony helped develope it and practically own the name itself. Your best bet will be that Microsoft developes a new format all their own. I actually wouldn't be suprised if they went all digital. Y'know, like putting games on thumb drives or something like that. Or making their games completely downloadable. Microsoft just seems to be big into the digital distribution thing. Please Log In to post.
