so i just bought a Panasonic plasma 1080p HDTV(two days ago, btw), was very excited to hook up my xbox 360 to see what high definition gaming was all about. but, obviously, i can't get the freakin thing to work no matter what i try. and i'm serious, i think i've tried everything there is to try. but this is driving me freakin crazy b/c i've tried everything about 10 times over! So anyway, here's the problem:

whenever the a/v cable switch is set to "hdtv", NOTHING HAPPENS! it's just a black/blank screen with no audio at all. now, i can play the xbox just fine whenever the a/v cable is set to "tv", but that's not high def! i tried going to the display settings in the xbox dashboard, but the settings won't change from 480p. and Yes, i tried switching the a/v cable to "hdtv" but that's when the problem occurs! the xbox restarts but nothing else happens! the screen just stays black and there's no audio. now i know what you're gonna ask, and before you ask i just wanna say, i've been using/messing with electronics of all kind for the past 10 years at least, so i have a general idea of what i'm doing, i'm not a noob. YES, all the cables are correctly connected and firmly snugged(i've checked all the basics about 20 times over, to be honest); YES, whenever i switch the a/v cable to "hdtv" i'm on the correct input channel that it should be playing on. Now, i checked the tv owner's manual and it said the component inputs(which are the inputs i'm using; i'm using the component cables that the xbox comes with) are compatible with 480p, 480i, 720p, and 1080i. so it should work right???

i've looked all over the internet but i can't find a solution, i've tried pretty much everything it seems like. and this really hurts: all the tv has, that is high def compatible, is two hd component inputs, and three hdmi inputs. the tv doesn't have a VGA port, so i can't go out and by a xbox VGA cord. and even though the tv has three hdmi inputs, my xbox doesn't have any hdmi ports! so wtf? i'm a just completely f*cked or what? PLEASE HELP. THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!

If you have all the cables plugged in (blue, green, red, and the two audio cables) I dont know what the problem could be, but Madcatz and i believe Nyko have made an adapter for old 360's to plug in a HDMI cable, I bought one and im satisfied with the results.

Go to the last system blade, choose display, choose resolution. Had same problem when I upgraded to HDTV. Felt silly when I finally realized what was wrong. Enjoy! :-)

Does your XBOX have an HDMI? I've never used the tv/hdtv switch. I didn't even know the older XBOX's didn't come with an HDMI output (I just found that out from The-Hitchhiker) but the only thing I can remember is my cousin saying that he had to turn everything off and THEN switch it. You've probably already tried that but it worked for him. Other than that, if your XBOX does have HDMI I wouldn't even mess with the components or that box. Lemme know what happens, I'll see what my cousin say too.

if you have a hdmi port on your xbox then you should be using a hdmi cable anyways because you wont get 1080p out of your tv otherwise. and it will solve any of the problems seclecting between hd and not hd. if you connect via component then you should get a picture no matter which way the switch is. on my tv if its on sdtv and plugged in component then it still comes up on the component channel on my tv but only in 480 if your plugging everything in right then it must be the cable if other stuff work in them plugs on the tv. check for a hdmi port on your xbox then tv, then get one of them leads if you can use it as it has the best picture anyways

not really sure what the problem is - never heard of it before. it may be because the component cable has two red things you might of put them in the wrong one? (one is audio one is video) i'm not sure but it's the only thing i can think of.

when the a/v cable switch is set to "tv", it won't let me change the resolution. it just stays at 480p no matter what. and whenever i turn the a/v cable switch to "hdtv", to try and change the resolution, there's no video or audio.

no HDMI port on my xbox.

but if it's just the hd cables, shouldn't i at least get audio? the audio works fine when i hook up the yellow/red/white to play in standard def. (cause that's the only way i can actually play my xbox) and when i try to do high def, i hook up the green/blue/red hd components, along with the red/white audio. no pic or sound. you see what i'm saying? i should at least be getting audio right? and yes, all of the cables are correctly in the right inputs. trust me.

anyway, thanks for everyone's reply. i guess i'll go buy some new component cables and try that. it won't hurt. ANYMORE SUGGESTIONS IF THAT DOESN'T WORK?

Hmm. Be sure that only the component cables are plugged into the tv (R,B,G, and R/L RCA audio). Put the switch on HDTV before you power on the 360. Then try switching the resolution again in the system menu. You cannot move the switch while powered on, that I know. Good Luck!

I had the exact same problem last time round. Check the mode of the your TV. It should be the one same as the one u are connecting ur red, blue, green cables to. Sometimes u are connecting it correctly but your TV set are displaying in different modes.

you don't hook up the first audio cable for regular TV quality. That's what it was for me atleast.

You gotta be hooking something up wrong,or the cables are messed. Did u leave the yellow video cable unplugged? I f u plug all the cabled in including the yellow one it won't work, plug all in except the yellow and all in the right spots and u should be fine. If that don't work borrow one of your friends cables to see if it's urs that's bad before you go waste your money on another cable when you don't have to.
