I dont get it? Ok there is much better support for xbox and there is wider variety of games but come on paying to play online is just really weird? This you might think is a systemwars thing but I want to know how you can justify the Live thing instead of the free online gaming from a PS3? Its pissing me off because I want to buy a an xbox360 but paying for the console, the games, the electricity AND the LIVE is not making help decide!

It's only a bit more than 4 dollars a month, so I really don't mind. It's not like it's destroying my life's savings or anything, this is the reason I got a job.

I don't mind paying for

  • An infrastructure that allows the community to self-govern with:
    • Gamer zone
    • Rep
    • Prefer/avoid
    • Feedback
  • Two levels of matchmaking
    • Preference-based, using the features listed above
    • Skill-based, using MS's TrueSkill system
  • Functional cross-game invite system that brings you straight into a friend's session
  • Closed, secure network that actively checks for modded consoles
  • MS has resources whose job is to specifically connect with the community. Major Nelson, Trixie... and the support they give to fan sites. Not to mention the organized events on their Community Calendar, like Ladies Night, Family Game Night, Prime Time and Frag Doll Fridays.
  • MVP, Ambassador and Community Developer Programs... those gamercards in our sigs were made by fan sites aided by MS programmers. Same can be said about Achieve360Points.com, 360Voice.com and other sites I'm forgetting.
  • The cross-country campaign to help educate parents and legislators about online gaming

That's plenty to justify the cost to me.

You get what you pay for? I have had my xbox and xbox live for a little more than a week and everyday the servers have been laggy or down. It is not my connection. I have not had a server problem with playstation network in the 3 years I owned a ps2.

Yes there has been a conection problem the last weekish BUT thats due to all the kids out of school and online flooding the servers when they all go back to school it will be back to normal...If the PSN had as many PPL it would also be having the same problem JUST goes to show you how weak it customer base is

i wouldn't mind if they had dedicated servers or some kind of service....but there just stealing you money with this....which is why i dont pay for it....and now there trying the samething on pc....having to pay to get the ful experience on pc games....so you cant actually justify the price...you can just demote other console and services to make you feel like your purchase was worth while....

IMO i like downloading demos on ps3 more then 360. For ps3 i can do other things while its downloading instead of waiting and staring at the screen for the 360. Sure xbox live is better but to me its the same thing. All sony has to do is allow u to open msgs while ur ingame and sending etc just like what xbox live does.

People like you just don't understand. If Live were free, it wouldn't have all the features and downloadable content has now. You get what you pay for. PSN is free and it sucks doesn't it? Live costing money is what makes it so good because that money goes towards making Live a better place.

the only problem i have with paying for it is when it has all these problems it's having right now.TigerFangRed

Have to agree with that. I don't mind paying so much since it's less than the price of a single game for an entire years subscription but at times like now it is MS's duty to make sure that LIVE is delivering to those who are paying for it. They should re-inburse the lost days for the time the network is down. You wouldn't pay for a cable or sattelite channel and thn have an entire week were you can't watch anything. You'd expect some sort of refund from the provider.

Another issue I have with paying is that there is absolutley no balance between the amount of content between regions. I live in Japan where we have still yet to get video marketplace. We are paying more for our live subscriptions and being given less than1/3 the amount of content and ervices that the U.S. marketplace gets. And it doesn't help when theU.S. also gives away free games like Aegis Wings and themes and gamerpics as well as point competitions.

And finally if we are paying for LIVE we shouldn't have to pay online subsciptions for games on top of that. i.e. Final FantasyXI, Phantasy Star Universe etc. I'm sure when they first announced LIVE with True Fantasy Online they claimed that one of the advantages of paying forLIVE was that you wouldn't have to pay any extra additional subscriptions charges. So much for that.

i am so sick of people complaining about live's price. if you dont want to pay, get a ps3 and see if your happy with the games available on it. STOP COMPLAINING TO US. We dont have a problem with paying 50 bucks a YEAR for a great service so go complain to someone who cares and the majority of people here wont. cmon 50 bucks.. thats like 1 days work on minimum wage...

Which is a system function, not a network function so not included in LIVE, also its not really that good. Works wonderfully for me. The catch is that the onus falls upon the user to actually use those features. These functions really don't come into play with Silver accounts. They provide a benefit to Gold subscribers since they are the ones actually connecting with other people
    Two levels of matchmaking
    • Preference-based, using the features listed above
    • Skill-based, using MS's TrueSkill systemVoodooHak
Both are title based, not network based. It's included in the dev kit for devs to use. With over 300 Xbox titles using TrueSkill, it's still a valid bullet point in favor of Xbox Live. Infact MS's systems is actually in titles on the PS3. Link please

Functional in home (which is so late) however Home also adds on party support which live lacks. Once again tho this is all System functionality, it has nothing to do with LIVE. It benefits ONLY pople with Xbox Live Gold since it deals with online mulitplayer. How does Silver benefit? Valid point for Xbox Live.Home? What good is it if it's not standard. Last time I checked, Home is optional. I'll believe Home's cross-game functionality once I see it. As it stands, it's up there with in-game XMB as vaporware.

Again a system function, and not LIVE. Again, the feature benefits mostly people playing online multiplayer.

Way not LIVE, and a few blogs and calenders hardly warrant 50bucks a year. Sony offers similar things. Similar but hardly as organized. ThreeSpeech? Please. These scheduled nights would only matter to those with Xbox Live Gold unless you've figure out a way to participate in Frag Doll Friday with a silver account. The point is there are people scheduling these things and keeping the events monitored.

I dont see what the big deal is with everone complaining about paying for xbox live. Its only like four dollars a month. I spend more than fifty dollars a week on gas alone.

ya see.....everyone complains about paying for it when there are other services that cost helluva lot more than xbox live

i am so sick of people complaining about live's price. if you dont want to pay, get a ps3 and see if your happy with the games available on it. STOP COMPLAINING TO US. We dont have a problem with paying 50 bucks a YEAR for a great service so go complain to someone who cares and the majority of people here wont. cmon 50 bucks.. thats like 1 days work on minimum wage...

Great service? I turn it on once without haveing a problem with live.

Works wonderfully for me. The catch is that the onus falls upon the user to actually use those features. These functions really don't come into play with Silver accounts. They provide a benefit to Gold subscribers since they are the ones actually connecting with other peopleVoodooHak
yet its still not in live. System function.
It's included in the dev kit for devs to use. With over 300 Xbox titles using TrueSkill, it's still a valid bullet point in favor of Xbox Live. yet its not a part of LIVE, its a title function. Its also just simple match making of which many systems exist. Its also something devs can choose to license for other platforms.VoodooHak
It benefits ONLY pople with Xbox Live Gold since it deals with online mulitplayer. How does Silver benefit? Valid point for Xbox Live. Home? What good is it if it's not standard. Last time I checked, Home is optional. I'll believe Home's cross-game functionality once I see it. As it stands, it's up there with in-game XMB as vaporware.VoodooHak
Doesnt matter who it benefits or holds back as in this case, its not a part of LIVE but a system function. Ingame XMB has been included with many titles along with custom sound tracks. The Home interface is a PSN feature but manageable within Home.
Similar but hardly as organized. ThreeSpeech? Please. These scheduled nights would only matter to those with Xbox Live Gold unless you've figure out a way to participate in Frag Doll Friday with a silver account. The point is there are people scheduling these things and keeping the events monitored.VoodooHak
ThreeSpeech hasnt got anything to do with Sony, I was referring to their own blogs, their various studios blogs, community functions, and such.
MS pays for the support. And until I see similar supprot for the competition, it's a valid plus for XBLVoodooHak
They dont need Sonys support, PSN is open. ... I still have not seen a single thing mentioned which warrants paying the richest company in the world for basic multiplayer access.

Were talking about a reason for the cost of live, Home isnt a system function but additional software indeed, however it does have lower functions which are indeed system tied.
