Maybe you can't have more than one device using the internet at the same time. I'm not sure how to solve it though.

Your router is probably to close to your modem. Does your modem have Voip or built in wireless? Also does your Laptop ever disconnect or is it just the Xbox? Also you may want to check if theres a firmware update. Does the problems stop if you disable wireless? Have you tried a hard reset?Whats the DHCP lease renew set to? Did you configure the TCP and UDP ports on your router for Xbox live? What happens if you connect directly to the modem? What happens if you try and reconnect to xbox live through the gui? Might lead you in a direction towards figuring out whats going on. These are all generic things you can check.

It could be that you have a really slow Internet speed, and when the laptop logs on, the xbox doesn't get enough Internet and it breaks down.

have you tried to go online with your laptop off?

The dchp assigns a local ip address to every device connected to the router. What I believe the problem is that the router is assigning the same ip to the same devices, etc.

One way of testing this is to manually set up a reserved ip for both the laptop and the xbox. YOu will need to create a reserved ip in the router for each device, and then on both the laptop and the xbox, specify the ip addresses that you used in the router. If this works you will force the two devices onto seperate ip addresses and the net should work for both devices at the same time.

This process is different for every router and computer so I can't help you there.

I can't guarentee this is even your problem, but it may help.

1st of all...You're not missing much if GTAIV is all you're trying to play...but aside from that. Seek the infamous 1-800 number on the back of the router's box. Talk to those people for about 54 minutes. When they aren't able to help you. Call your ISP (internet service provider) and have them -not- help you for 1 hour and 26 minutes. Then, when you're done with that, call microsoft and tell them your problem (after waiting for about 57 minutes). Once you're done with that, you should be good to go.

EDIT: Then, once you're angry and sick of all this technology not working. Trash the router you have and go to Best Buy. Get the Dynex wireless N router for $69.99. Fumble through the junky instructions that come with it and then you'll have your elusive online play.

I don't know then man. Troubleshoot. Try everything you can in order to isolate the problem. Once you do that then we can help you more. But right now, there are just too many different things it could be.

Idk. Haven't went to college for this...yet. But I'd Google the junk out of "good dhcp address range" and see what you can learn. Use this as an opportunity to expand your personal knowledge. Then you can WOW all of your friends once you figure it out ;)

Plus, I checked out the router you have and it runs off of G technology. That's garbage. Last year's junk. Step it up to an N router and that might solve most of your problems. If that doesn't work then it's definately your modem and/or ISP. So try that, then give your internet company a call. Have em' run a speed test and email you the results. There, problem solved.

omfg ive been having this same problem for months. i thought i was the only one. i have a d-link too and i didnt even know the router was the problem until about a month ago. my cousin told me it has something to do with the router settings, dont really know cuz i havent gotten him to fix it yet. btw, you shouldnt need to power cycle. i just sign in right after it signs me out and it works fine until i turn it off again.

You NEED to try and set a reserved ip for each device and eliminate the possibility of ip confliction.

lol, well im pretty sure u can cause before when i had this different setup with my internet and ethernet stuff etc, i could have everyone on the net at the same time, and the fact that i can still sign in on xbox live and stay on for a few mins with every1 connected most likely means its possible to stay on the net at the same time??

Set a reserve for your xbox in the router, then set the xbox up manually and specify the ip address you reserved. Make sure the ip address you are reserving is at the end of the ip range. I wouldn't worry about the pc, just doing this shoul fix it if this is the problem.

THis G to N stuff is a load of rubbish.. it wont make the slightest bit of difference.. G is more than enough for playing games.. and dont buy another router until you work out what the issues are.

When you run the network test on your xbox what does it say your NAT is set at moderate/strict etc... if your NAT is open it wont say anything on the NXE
