Microsoft isn't putting a single cent into online game servers, infact, my ISP is, and I already pay them.

Microsoft also are not putting a single cent into game demos, again my ISP hosts them, so why do I need to pay M$ for them?

M$ don't pay anything for betas either, so wtf?

Why do I have to pay M$ money for all these features, when they have ABSOLUTLY NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF THEM. The subscription should be based on actual aditional features ontop of standard features, I shouldn't have to pay for what isn't even considered a service by any other company on the planet.

Sadly, as many people still seem to think they're actually paying Microsoft for something, Microsoft can continue to ask money for nothing, and untill people start realising they're being ripped off, this stupidity is going to continue. I'm not saying there shouldn't be a gold service, and that some features of the gold service do cost M$ money, I'm just saying the vast majority of features people actually want (ie online play) cost Microsoft absolutly nothing and thus they shouldn't threaten us with a lack of online play unless we subscribe to the rest of the trash which I couldn't give two flying monkies about.

Easy solution to that just don't buy Xbox Live... If it wasn't for microsoft then there wouldn't be Xbox 360.

having a ps3 as well and palying that online as well..i see what happens when you don't pay..ps3 online is good, but when compared to the quality of live it fails terribly if you ask me. I constantly get dropped from games, stats never update or always change on the ps3..never a problem on live..i will gladly pay for a service thats not all over the place like the ps3's

I've never really been disappointed by Microsoft's subscription fee. I feel that it's pretty fair and that they provide an excellent service. The servers are always up and running beautifully, I can always find the content I want and download speeds are optimal, and streaming never lags.

Honestly, if you're not happy with paying their fee just find another gaming platform. They aren't going to change their ways, and there aren't enough people on this website to provide enough loss to Microsoft for them to even consider changing their ways.

But thats the point, those speeds, they have nothing to do with Microsoft. They have to do with who is hosting the content. Microsoft does not host any of the content on xbox live, I download all the content from my ISP for example. As for the servers, they're all P2P, so your actually the one hosting your server. And right now, the demo for Enslaved is only available for subscribers. I thought demo's were meant to be a form of advertisment, to make sure a person actually likes the game before buying it, and to generate hype? I didn't realise we had to pay to be adverised to, but there ya go.

All up all of these features have nothing to do with Microsoft, so why do they need money for them?

Cause your satalite company supplies you with content.

True, those features might not have anything to do with their servers but it's still their service. You don't actually buy the ingredients from a restaurant but you still pay them for the meal. So why pay for the restaurant's service if they're just getting the ingredients from somewhere else?

My metaphor might lack, but I think it gets my point across.

I agree that the charges do not equal to the quality of the networking for games (dedicated servers). Certain airline companies charge for extra luggage fee which is unfair but you have a choice to use another airline as well as gaming platform

I get what your saying, but still, the developers do the vast majority of the work, they handle all the network coding, and the players host the servers. Microsoft do a few things like friend lists. But then, charge for those! I don't mind premium features like friend lists and chat clients etc costing money (even though services like Steam handle all of that for free), but something as basic as network play should be free... Something as basic as a demo download should also be free...

I might be mistaken but I believe all of Microsoft's content comes straight from their servers. And if not from their servers you first connect to them to gain access to other servers which hold the content.

You're still going through Microsoft's servers to get their service.

. Microsoft works like steam, all the content is hosted by third parties. It's why content from XBox live doesn't count toward my bandwidth limit in Australia, because my ISP is hosting it all.

P2P hosting still relies on central servers, doesn't it? I mean, I know I could be completely wrong, but I always thought Microsoft's servers were the reason why Xbox LIVE's online was so much more stable than PSN's.

That is interesting. I can't honestly say that I know enough to make Microsoft's argument solid but I have played on PSN and as somebody else said before, their service is good but Microsoft's is much, much better in my eyes.

I agree that Xbox Live should be free but the truth is that they do have a lot of content like social networking, Netflix, and Hulu Plus. However, a lot people dont use those services and they just want to play online multiplayer. I think they should make the online multiplayer free or offer it for a cheaper price than the current Gold subscription.

I agree that MS is miles ahead of the competition when you consider consoles. However, if you consider PC Steam is miles ahead of xbox live and Valve don't see the need to charge anything. And to respond to your previous post, you might be right, something would have to be in place to locate players in order to connect them. But again, it's the same deal with MSN and any other netoworked app, the cost would be negligable. I mean, other comapnies host full servers for free and what MS is doing is a far cry from that. MS is hosting a quality service, but IMO they're charging for a service that should be standard as it is from every other company. Online gaming outside of MMORPG's has always been free, even MMORPG's are going free to play now. So why does MS need money for XBox Live? Again, they can charge for extra features they develop and host like friend lists and what ever else they have, I can understand that. But charging for online play... let alone P2P online play on games they haven't even developed? That doesn't make sense to me...

Five dollars says Kinetic sucks.

On a side note. I see where you're coming from. Still, I use my Xbox for so many things, such as Voice Chat and Netflix, that I don't mind the subscription.

if he did have the money to buy a ps3(about $300?) then thats 5 years of xbox live subscription right there.

His argument isn't on his lack of money but on the fact that competitors are providing a similar service for free.

Yeah, I just don't like the idea of physically paying for something that I'm not going to use. If you use all the features of XBox live like you do I can see it as being worthwhile. However the only thing I really want (and I'm sure many are in the same situation) is online play. A basic feature like that should probably be seperated, or if MS really really wanna charge for it charge less and just package it with friend lists and basic community features like that (though they could just make it free and charge for those bonus features which I think would be the fairest solution).

It should also be said that Xbox LIVE does not like to see itself as just a gaming platform but as a multi-media device. I understand that the main, and the largest, attraction, and audience, to Xbox LIVE are it's gamers but it's just the way they present themselves. They want to target as many demographics as possible for more sales.

That being said, I'm sure Xbox LIVE just sees every costumer as a potential multi-media buyer hence they only have one package for their service.

So you are saying your ISP has a server which they store files on for microsoft? no no no, that's not how things work. What you are implying here is that every ISP in the world hosts the xbox360 demos for their customers?

I think very soon the only free on-line gaming your gonna get will be on the PC.With that said,MS seems to be the most stubborn Company in the gaming business that I've ever witnessed. Their competitors offer it for free, but they plod on, even raising the price!

I can't help but think that the other console makers will soon follow along and that kinda makes me mad, they have no cojones.

I guess much of us gamers don't either, cause I won't go without the on-line play.

My two cents- something is worth only what someone else will pay for it. If 51% of current xbox live subscribers are willing to renew at the higher price, it is officially(in my mind) worth it. Contrariwise, it would be decided individually- if you renew, it's worth it. If you renew, but say the price isn't worth what you get out of it, you're lying. The service is only what you use, and value is based on whether or not you're willing to pay.

The money we're paying should be going on dedicated servers instead of into a large profit pit.

Heres one easy solution to that dude.

Don't Buy xbox live, if you want to play online so much then play online on your PC or get a PS3 and play online there.

Simple as ever.

Silver is free in xbox live anyways, so if you still want xbox live FREE just get silver.

Bad comparison. You're paying for channels, you actually get something. Live does not provide internet, or even dedicated servers.

They already have it, Playstation Plus, which gives you content. Online MP is still free, as it should be. You've already paid for your internet and game, isn't that enough/

I am pretty tired of paying for Live but my subscription runs on in April of 2012. However, I have a PS3 and I will get my online fix from PSN in the future.

Live used to be worth the money for me to pay the subscription because I played all the time. However, I only play games like 1-2 hours a week due to having a busier schedule and it is not worth it for me.

My point is if the fees are not worth it for you just play games offline because Xbox live is worth every cent for the people who use it.

Great service but the price is not for everyone.

I used to be a hardcore gamer.

i think many people have always been expecting a price reduction since

this has been much discussed many many times. i was a little dissapointed that

microsoft took the other direction - increase by $10.

it doesn't hurt but still.. $50-60/yr with expected console lifespan of 6 years

is about $300-360 every console generation. that money could be used instead on

xbox 720 or w/e. as of now, it's not affecting me, but i'm sure those who are in a tight budget feel differently.

I wouldn't mind pay $20-30 for Xbox Live... but 60? Does it really need to be that much?

That's great, don't buy Xbox Live then. You need to know how ISPs work, because the MS servers arent run by your ISPs ;)

[QUOTE="DriftRS"]Microsoft also are not putting a single cent into game demos, again my ISP hosts them, teknic1200
So you are saying your ISP has a server which they store files on for microsoft? no no no, that's not how things work. What you are implying here is that every ISP in the world hosts the xbox360 demos for their customers?

No, I'm implying exactly what I stated, my ISP hosts the content, which is true. It's the same way steam work, third parties host all the content. I'm not saying your ISP is hosting the content your downloading, but if they're large enough and host thier own game servers, there's a chance they also host XBox Live content. However it isn't just ISPs there's many companies around the world who host the data. You can't tell who your downloading it off from Xbox Live, but if you don't believe me go launch steam, download a game and double click it to check it's progress, it'll tell you who your grabbing it from.

It's the fact people don't seem to realise this that makes it seem like MS are offering a service. There are services Microsoft do handlein Live, but if all your doing is playing on online servers and downloading games your not using any and MS are pretty much just taking your money for nothing.

EDIT:

Never said they were, I said the servers were P2P and my ISP (and other companies) host the data :P

having a ps3 as well and palying that online as well..i see what happens when you don't pay..ps3 online is good, but when compared to the quality of live it fails terribly if you ask me. I constantly get dropped from games, stats never update or always change on the ps3..never a problem on live..i will gladly pay for a service thats not all over the place like the ps3's

Quote of the year

If all you use Xbox live for is to game online, then it isn't worth $60 a year. Buy your multiplats on the PS3, I have never had a connection issue on PSN unless it was due to the third party's server (EA, I am looking at you!). I typically stock up on 3 month Live cards when I find them cheap so I can game for a couple months after a good exclusive launches, that way I don't feel like I am wasting my money.

It's called business. They make money from it. Making it free would stop that from happening. Why would you stop your huge cash flow on purpose?

That is how I feel. Live is a good service as far as online games are concerned. If you don't like it switch to the next best thing, PC, and be prepared to dump 2k in a decent machine like I am doing right now.
