my 360 is hooked up by an ethernet cord running through the house to a desktop pc and the ethernet cord plugs into my router which is plugd to the modem, i have never had any problems with this way of method before and has been running well for a good 5 months.

well theres this storm today and it was big and i saw a lighting bolt hit my neighboors house and the modem shut down for a second but nothing else did (besides my microwave?). so i saw it turned off rebooted the modem/router and everything my internet works good on my desktop and the laptop in my room is good to. but for some reason the 360 wont go to live, i tried testing it and it says its not wired up.

Its weird though cause sometimes after i leave the 360 on for a bit it says it is wired but then it says IP adress failed. Im stuck and pretty pissed cause i just bought final fantasy 11 3 days ago and im really enjoying it. ive tried unplugging everything and plugging it back in, but i know it has worked before cuz ive played on live before with halo etc. i just dont understand. bad ethernet?? someone help!!!!

so you're saying your 360 plugs into your desktop pc. correct? Then somehow your desktop is plugged into your router or is it wireless? im confused. If that is the case then you will probably have to bridge the connections again. If not i have no idea yo

sorry didnt explain well. its 360 to router, router to modem, modem to desktop. i tried doing bridge connections and it says that there needs to be 2 LAN connections that are not being used by internet connection sharing? its plugged into the router but the dot on the router that is suppose to be green isnt on at all but it turns on sometimes and i get hooked up with the xbox but then i have that IP problem

sounds like an iffy setup to begin with. the internet might also be bugged for alittle while, if it's still like this in 2 days then you know you have a problem.

Can you connect to the internet with your PC? If not, the storm might have taken out your router and/or your local cable service.

If you can connect to the internet with other devices (ie only the 360 is effected) and everything else is hooked up the same way as before, then I think the problem is that your router reset itself after a power surge and has reverted to its default settings. If so, you'll need to change the settings back to whatever will work with your 360 (think NAT/firewall settings etc). Obviously it's hard to tell for sure without being there, but I'd bet on this being the case. Try running through the 360's Live connection setup wizard again from scratch.

By the way, you should really invest in a high quality surge protector if you live in an area that is prone to thunderstorms. Expect to pay $40-60 for a decent one that will offer a guarantee if it fails to protect your electronics. A $10 lump of plastic from Target isn't going to offer any protection, so spend the money.

I'll admit I don't know much about the technical end, but I did have a similar problem day before yesterday. I'm set up wirelessly. Two days ago there was a lightening strike in the neighborhood that caused a blip in our power. Result was one of our 360's wouldn't connect to Live and failed at the first test. A reset of the 360--unplugging the main power cable from the back of the 360 for 30 seconds then plugging it back in--fixed the problem. So, maybe try resetting your 360 if you haven't?

i tried to unplug longer than a minute i did it for like 15 mins and it still wouldnt turn back on. I aslo just tried switching cords out and that wouldnt work either.

Im having a difficult time finding my router on the PC in network connections i see LAN high speed internet there but when i right click the icon and try to go to advanced the only thing there is firewall (which is off) and theres no option to allow share. Im sure if i could locate where to get to the setting for my router it could be fixed possible. Could there be something wrong with the xbox maybe? Cause im using the internet now and it shows im wireless connected to the router out there.

isn't that wrong? shouldn't modem go to router and then ur computer and xbox go from the router?
