I remember playing old madden games against random people and talking with them etc...seems these days everyone just stays in an xbox live party...which i must admit i do as well but not all the time. The only social behavior i see now is on mw2 with a bunch of loud trashtalkers...other than that nobody talks...how about you guys?

I tend to not talk to people I don't know over Live. Every once in a while I'll turn the mic on and talk to people in game. The problem is having to listen complain when you're not playing well and a few people who are simply annoying.

If you play some team based games like Gears of war, you'll find alot of people that aren't in party chat.

But yea, XBL isn't that social anymore.

Talking to random people is not an option i choose unless no one is online or no one has the games i have and that usually never happens. i would agree with this.

The invention of party chat pretty much killed most social interaction with random people. Oh the days of Halo 2 and Halo 3 before party chat...so much trash talking. It was great.

Nowadays almost every device I use has so many social features.

Got facebook/twitter everywhere I go.

Email.

Texting.

Phone.

Voice mail.

Voice comms.

People talking face to face.

My whole day is filled with blah blah blah.

So when I sit down to play, the last thing I want to do is talk.

I don't even bother to play with my headset anymore. Although it would be really helpful for communication in Battlefield Bad Company, the majority of users are either in parties, have their televisions turned to loud that their headsets are filled with it, or they are insulting other individuals for inferior play.

I do know what you mean. Although, I never used the headset (very, VERY rarely) myself. I agree that party chat killed any social interaction between strangers on Xbox Live however. Ah well, maybe more games should have a "no party chat" option in playlists and stuff :).

I miss the good old days when Xbox live was FUN! Back when people get so angry when me and my friends (sometimes family members) T-Bag people on Halo 3, or even winning matches that got them so angry back then. Nowadays, its so boring, since everyone is either on Party Chat or have no Mic. Since my Xbox live expires tomorrow, I'm not thinking about renewing it after how boring the Community become (no offense people). Plus, I'm more into Single Player gaming so thats another thing, even though I might renew it soon though.

I'd say it is still social. Then again, I'm a grade A griefer and I regularly end CoD games with Napalm Strikes just so I can play Usher'sBurn over the mic for the final killcam. I also love to play JT's Cry Me a River when kids in the lobby get butt-hurt over myteam beating them (the chorus of Alphacat's parody of I Need A Doctor gets played quite often too). Those songs and the original Pokemon theme song get played on a daily basis, more or less. That kind of stuff sure gets people talking :)... always nice to get that "wow, you're such a (insert homophobic slur here)... kill yourself" response out of someone.

When I'm not griefing, though, I'd say a fair amount of people still talk... you just have to initiate conversations in game lobbies and what not. My Elpresador-esque "AIGHT PEOPLE... what's up?" usually gets people to talk :D.

You do realize when you play music over the mic it muffles and distorts it so bad you can barely understand anything above the mindless garble? People probably insta-mute you. Lol.

I love the mute button in Black Ops.... I enjoy talking to others when I play. When I get annoyed, I just mute them.

I'd say it's still social, but not in a good way. Play most multiplayer games these days and you will hear either silence or profanity. Locating anyone decent is a miracle. It's really disappointing, because I remember when I first started playing multiplayer (not on XBL, mind you) people were happy just to be able to play online in the first place. Now it's all unnecessary hostility. Guess people get a kick out of being jerks.

I may not renew my XBL this year because the community is so horrid and I've really started to grow tired of it.

I agree xbox live parties took the fun out of xbox live. I remember the fun days of being in games with a room full of people talking and having a good time. Sure there were idiots who would spew ignorance over their mics but that was the cost of chatting on xbox live back then. All you had to do was mute them. Halo 3 and Cod 4 were some of the funniest times I had on xbox live before party chat. I miss those days.

It's usually pretty clear when I do it lol. I have X11s so maybe that's why... I'm pretty sure people don't mute me, because usually everyone with a mic in the lobby starts to cuss/act tough/say they will kill me/laugh at it/sing along. You'd be surprised by how many random people will start singing the Pokemon theme song by themselves after I play it.

Another common song is Black or White by MJ... I save that for when people start the "OMG YOU (insert racist term for blacks here)" or "YOU'RE SUCH A (insert racist term for Pakistanis here)."

I don't think its just the xboxlive parties. The 360 has been around so long that everyone already has a full friendlist and probably plays with the same people whenever they get on. When the console first came out most people were still looking for people to play with, but for most of us that search is long since over.

to be honest I often dont bother with my mic and the reason is those trash talkers you mentioned, theyre all over xbox live from halo to the afore mentioned sprts games and they make socialising and co-ordinating a nightmare ... i only really use the mic publically outside a party to tell em to STFU when they;re insulting the teams performance ... especially since its usually them who are letting the team down ...

well, I normally don't. Caus there are way to many kids talking. they all think their cool with their "Gamerscore" and say that everybody is a noob just cause they have higher gamerscore than the others, oh and thrash talk OH THE HORROR!!! they just keep on swearing and screaming with no end, sometimes you find people who you get along with, but most of them are little kids and cod fanboys, what I do, is I put my mic in the controller, then I put the volume on my mic down to zero and turn off my mic, and then put it on my head for comfort

I think that you also have to attribute it to xbl being out for soo long. I'm sure next generation will start off as really social too.

More like the opposite. Playing an online match without an Headset is quite boring to say the least. Matter of fact, ever since the Party Chat thing came out in late 08, it feels like online matches are Quiet then Talkable now, like back in the good old days of 2006-early 2008. It feels like I'm playing with better AI, or possibly 90% of the time, stupid AI (*Cough*BETRAYERS*Cough*).

Sure party chat played a factor, but I think it also has to do with game types- CoD, Halo, Gears, GTA- they all have really vulgar and/or annoying communities. When I play games like L4D, Lost Planet2 or Mercs2- co op games- I don't have trouble finding people w/ mics.

I have to agree, it's more focused on parties now than just in-game chats. Shame really, it's closed the xbox live platform down quite substantially, especially for those who don't have a very big friends list.
