$50 a year is a rip off, but there is no way around it.
Online multiplayer is more of a necessity, since campaigns for games have gotten shorter and shorter.
Hence Gears of War's 4 hour campaign.
Servers would cost to much and raise the cost and make it very much possible for M$ to edit you game life and limit your free speach.lge777
Your rant makes no sense whatsoever.

hes got a couple of typo's but it does make sense :? ....."the servers cost too much and as a result the users would have to contribute a greater cost, it would also make it possible for MS to tamper with your gaming details/profiles etc" :D
am i the only one that doesnt have an issue with £39.99 a year? I feel the it pays for the 'free demos', content etc and the awesome gaming experience you get with LIVE. I would happily pay £100 a year for it. You can read articles all day long about how they have disected LIVE and realised "OMG its a huge ripoff!!!", but it comes down to how much you love it and the extent you would go to play on LIVE. I realised that there's no substitute for online gaming and its £40 a year isnt exactly a huge ripoff now is it?anandram
Demos are not justification for paying.
Demos are given out free from the vendors. They have been for the past 15 years or so.
Where have you been?
PC Games have had demos since PC Gaming.
Sony has demos, trailers, etc.
Same thing but its free.

individually it's not a huge ripoff but with 6 millions users x 49.99$ talk about a major ripoff
And what about:
These are things that most people just take for granted. I don't see nearly this much effort going into an online system for the other consoles, even on PC.

Yea i wasnt basing my whole argument on "demos" was i :? I was saying that you gotta be a real tight git to not want to pay $4 a month for something that you use probably everyday and entertains you everyday. Granted PS3 online is free, and i dont really know why MS have charged for LIVE if PS3 dont have to, but they are trying to make money....surprise surprise...and in an obscure way, Sony are ALSO trying to make indirect money by not charging for their online services, hoping people will buy the PS3 thinking - "oh the online is free". TBH - like i said - i dont know why you think its such a huge ripoff but continue to pay for it? Is it because you WANT it so bad, you WILL pay for it? :P

- Infrastructure that allows the community to self-govern:
- Gamer zone
- Rep
- Prefer/avoid
- Feedback
- Acvite monitoring of feedback
- Matchmaking that takes that all into account
- Functional cross-game invite system that brings you straight into a friend's session
- Closed, secure network that actively checks for modded consoles
- Connectivity to the web. I like being able to log into my account on xbox.com to check my messages and see what my friends are up to.
- MS has resources whose job is to specifically connect with the community. Major Nelson, Trixie
- MVP and Ambassador programs for prominent community members
- Active support they give to fan site developers
- Tournaments and community events

90%+ of the community does not even listen to wackos like Major Nelson.
Were more concerned with gaming.
I'm one of the few on my friends list that actually keeps up with the gaming community. This is not typical.
As for gaming Tournaments. That has to do with the people sponsoring the tournament. Which has NOTHING to do with Microsoft.
No one cares about community or forums. They just want a solid On-line gaming platform. That's all.

If thats the case then why are these people wasting money on live. I know why I pay for live and its the reasons the VoodooHak listed plus others. But all these other people you speak for are making a big mistake. If its true that these people flat out have no intrest in the 360 games or any of the specific live features then guess what, your wasting your money. But I know and weighted my options and I choose live.

Whether you care about someone like Major Nelson Trixie or not, his sole purpose (and salary) are to be a conduit between MS and it's 360 userbase. 90%? I don't know where you're getting that number from, but all I need to do is look at the amount of comments for his blog entries and I know there's an impact. He's well connected with the major fansites and new blogs like Penny Arcade, Joystiq and Kotaku just to name a few and offers up breaking news and interviews with people as close to the source as possible.
MS has events like Game with Fame and sponsorship of WCG. They have everything to do with MS.
No one care about community? Where'd you get that from? I think you mean YOU don't care about community. There are plenty of other out there that do.
That guy's sense of entitlement is certainly well established: 'Gimme gimme gimme for my $4/month.' That's all their article is saying basically. $4 a month is nothing, a pittance. I spend more than $4 a day just on food alone.
Bane_v2
That's true. :P
When I go to Publix and get a sub, which I'm going to do today because their subs are the bomb!! I spend $7...
Anyways, I honestly don't mind paying for Xbox Live.
$50 a year is nothing.
I pay $50 a month for internet. Its just that paying for Live is just another expense and it hurts, because every time you turn around something else is going up.
Gasoline is going to be $3 a gallon by next week.
College is $1500 a semester.
Its very very hard and Microsoft is not making it easier.

So are you seriously saying that you have THAT much of a problem with $4 a month? And stop basing YOUR opinions on what is deemed as the norm....because you cant say "none cares about community or forums", because some people do. So i dnot see your argument there.
I think its only FAIR that MS have made people pay. You can have this argument with anything in life really, but as far as LIVE goes, pay your $4/month and b happy that we have such a great online experience everytime we log onto good ol XBL. :D

Its $8 a month.

Microsoft putting up Toll-Booths on the Network Backbone should be a phelony. Its intentionally creating a Monopoly and destroying the entire point behind the Free-Market.

It's cheaper if you pay for more months at a time, down to $4.17 a month ($50 a year) if you buy 12 months at a time. Take your own advice smart guy.

What do those last few sentences mean? The bottom line is, Microsoft is providing you with a service, and they absolutely have the right to charge compensation for it. The fact that you might not agree with them charging for it is irrelevant- they have every right to do so. As a consumer, you have the magical fairy dust power wand that is choice- you can choose not to pay for it.[QUOTE="anandram"][QUOTE="JohnWinger"][QUOTE="VoodooHak"]And what about:

STEP 1: PICK UP YOUR CACULATOR, STEP 2: PRESS THESE BUTTONS: 50 / (THATS THE DIVIDE BUTTON) 12 (THATS THE AMOUNT OF MONTHS IN A YEAR).......NOW PRESS THE EQUALS BUTTON....IT LOOKS LIKE THIS: "="
THE RESULT IS 4.166(rec) = $4 a month...
Now if your not a cheap feck and got paid more then $100 a month, then you would realise that its more cost effective to buy years subscription and not go into a store and pickup the first 1month sub you see....so to conclude:
YOU do your research and you would have realised that EVERYONE in here is referring to the years subcription. Take your own advice.

You know of cousre, that it's $8 if you choose to pay by the month. You do know this don't you? You should also understand that if you buy a year's subscription, it boils down to $4 and some change.
Do you even have Xbox Live?

I don't mind paying but yeah, I really do feel we're paying too much for too little. I want more features.. I fully agree with that article. They raise some really awesome points. Hell if XBL gold service had just clan support from all those features then I wouldn't bat an eyelid about paying..
