Xbox LIVE region question. Canada & U.S.

Ok so here it is i been in Canada for about a few months and my gamertag that i had was American and i went and bought a points card here in CA it wouldn't work with my American GT...and i didn't know that so i was told i needed a Canadian GT in order for it to work but anyways i'm headin back to the States next month and i was wondering if i bought a Canadian XBOX LIVE 3 month card and redeemed it on my Canadian GT here before i leave can the service work with no problem?

I'm in Canada using a Canadian account but i'm going back to the states (New York) the question is if i bought an xbox live account 3 months and redeemed it here will the service work there and all its services etc. or am i gonna have to make a U.S. xbl account?
