if u get a harddrive and dont have live u can still play backward compatible games. You just have to download some software off the xbox website and burn it to a cd, then place it in ure 360

you get some Backwards compatibility

download BC updates from here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardscompatibility.htm#disc

burn them to a CD, and update your console

You must have a hard drive for backward compatability.

Alright, the guy has stated from the first message that he was, in fact, buying the stupid hard drive. Please stop telling him to buy it, he's already going to. All he wanted was to know if orig-xbox games worked w/o xbox live. To answer this, yes they do. If you have not already listened to the one or two useful comments out there then good, but follow the link posted above and burn the backward compatibility list to a CD. When you insert it into your 360 drive, it will automatically install.

Yeah, it may be irrelevant to the sitution really, but GET THE HARD DRIVE. I got the core system, came with no hard drive, and when I realized how little space the memory unit had, I immediatly went out and got the hard drive. lol.

If I were you, here's what I'd do: sign up for xbox live silver (it's free) and once you're connected, put in your BC xbox games one at a time to download the appropriate updates. Then if you never want to connect again, you don't have to, because the updates will already be downloaded. If you don't have a broadband connection, and therefore cannot use Xbox Live anyway, you're going to have to download the update file to a CD or DVD and put it in your console. If you follow the instructions given on the site with the update, it should just install them right away.
