Hey guys

This is probably pretty basic stuff to most people. but I'm having trouble geting on to xbox live.

I'm with Virgin Media (internet, phone, cable tv) package. (has anyone had trouble with geting on Live with them?)

I'm connecting the the cable that normally goes into the back of my set top box into my 360 but it says i cant share an ip address.

What do i have to do to fix this.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Consider using a router?

You could try inserting your pc's mac address into your 360 to see what happened. to do that, using Windows xp, you need to click Start> my network places> Network Connections> Double click on the connection your using (wired for you probably)> Support tab at the top> Click Details and then enter the physical address part into your 360. Only insert the characters leaving out the colons.

I'm not entirely sure how the Virgin set top box is set up. One thing I could ask is does the network cable that connects to your set top box run from your broadband modem or does it come from and external source (example a virgin media cable box on your wall?) If you can give me that info I will be able to help you out.

Hey

with virgin media the set top box actually is the modem, so i've tried just plugging it straight in to xbox, it registers that its connected . Tried phoning Virgin, everything else is free apart from there broadband customer services which want to charge me premium rate to call. I will post later tonight when I get back home with exactly what message the 360 is bringing up.

Cheers for your help so far guys

Hi guys, sorry about the delay.

When I cant connect to Xbox Live it come up with TEST YOUR CONNECTION

WHen I do that the NETWORK ADAPTOR is WIRED but my IP ADDRESS comes up as FAILED. under MORE INFO it says 'Your console was unable to negotiate a lease with your DHCP server. Make sure that addresses areavailable on your system'.

Also ' confirm that there are no other devices on your system with the same IP Address'.

I've tried typing in my computers i.p address as previously suggested but it doesn't work.

What I dont understand though is that the internet cable is going straight from the modem(in my set top box)into my xbox so it shouldnt be registering the P.C at all, should it?

I'm really confused and would be thankful fo any suggestions.

Cheers

Try turning your modem off and then turning it on again. Modems don't like it if you don't.

GOD... i sounded like something form the IT Crowd! "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

phone up the 25p per minutevirgin technical support. the reason they have the charge on is for people phoning up with internet problems that arnt to do with the virgin hardware so they charge them for support they aint meant to give, this is something genine getting ur setup sorted and what they will do is time the converstation and refund u the costs on ur telelphone bill from what they should of cost.

now i dont know much about using the digital tv for the internet, im sure this is a option they do for if u have a seperate modem for ur pc and for ur xbox go off the tv box. but phone them as they need to put the mac address of ur xbox into the kit or it wont work.

if u got a cable modem for ur pc u should be able to use this no bother, but u need to clone ur mac address of ur pc's network card to use it.

go on ur pc and click start, then click run. in the run box type "cmd" and click ok. this will bring up a dos command prompt in this type "ipconfig /all" this then brings up all the info for all the network cards in your computer, look for the one that is connected to the ETHERNET on the cable modem. (might have to scroll up to find it) it should say loads of stuff like ip address etc, look for PSHCYICAL ADDRESS and write down that number, its the mac address should be loads of groups of 2 characters seperated by -

disconnect the ethernet from the pc and turn the cable modem off and connect the xbox to the ethernet on the cable modem, the load up ur xbox and then go on the dashboard, system page, network settings, then they a bit on the ip addresses page for additonal settings, then input the numbers and letters u wrote down from the psycical address off ur pc into alternative mac address. make sure all the ip settings are still set to automatic and make sure all traces of the ip addresses u inputed are deleted. then start the tests. cancel them straight away. shut down ur xbox. and then turn on the cable modem give it 30 secs and then turn the xbox on and run the xbox live tests.

now if that dont work. or u only can use the top set digital tv box then while writing this im sure i remember seeing on the back that it has a sticker that says what its mac addresss. try connecting the xbox to the tv top set box ethernet, then use the mac address with the above method, changing the alternative mac address to the same one as the top set box and it might work. if it dont call virign up and they will sort it for u on the paid up line and they will and can refund ur call on ur next phone bill so it wont cost u anything.

i think with the top set box they have to know the mac address of ur xbox (which is found near the page to set an alternative mac address on ur dashboard) and they have to manually add it from they end to the top set box.

Hi guys

I tried turning it on and off the old IT way but it just said the same. Also I eventually phoned the 25p a minute Virgin line to be told (after about £2 worth of call time) that they are not trained to tell me anything about this and that they 'could hazard a guess' about what to do. Good times. I have router that I decided to use, but this just brings up a new set of problems. AGGHHHH!!!! will let you know exactly what it says when I get home.

Cheers

I think it would be better just to buy a seperate cable router.

Yes, most of the time. To the TC make sure you get a CABLE router not a DSL one.
