xbox live visa gift card issue

Would buying a gold membership through xbox live with a visa gift card work? because when you put up a credit card on xbox live and it stays on there forever automatically charging your account everytime your membership expires. Is there anyway I can use the visa gift card just to buy the membership once?

My brother is having the same issue. I think he just put down our address for address and "Gift Card Recipient" for name (That's what's in the name part after all), and the expiration date, but nothing is working. Is there a way or do these cards just not work?
