Ok just ate my words and got an X. Well, nothing I said wasn't already true, I just had the means to get one so I did. The S is already a fine machine for 1080p displays. For the price, its wonderful, and games do look good. That said, I absolutely noticed a big difference in image quality (texture clarity, lighting, draw distance, etc) even with 4K-enhanced games running at 1080p ("supersampling", what they call the down-scaling method). Like I said earlier, the S doesn't run many games at native 1080p, and the X absolutely does. The games go from looking good to great. So yes, the benefit is there even without 4K. (There are some exceptions - games that I would guess were never really ported well to the XB1 in the first place. Battlefield 4 still looks like jaggy, aliased crap on the X.)
But 4K, good lord. After playing COD WWII, Halo 5, and Titanfall 2 in 4K on the X, I may just move my system permanently into my living room, its that great. One thing that I thought was interesting was that all the "Xbox One Enhanced" games didn't need to download patches for the X, because they were already installed even when I was running them on the S (I keep them on an external hard drive). So I was able to immediately play everything I already owned, no updates required.
