Here's what I'm referring to with the different settings

Modern: Present day in a semi-believable setting; examples include GTA4, Splinter Cell, and Modern Warfare

Sci-Fi: pretty broad, can depict pretty much anything that is not currently around but is at least scientifically plausable; examples include Halo, Resident Evil

Historical: In the past, but in a semi-believable setting, often inspired by actual history; examples include the older CoD games, Red Dead Revolver, and Assassin's Creed

Post-Apocolyptic: Many would lump this with sci-fi, but there are so many games that use this setting that I think it deserves a category all it's own; usually set in some sort of wasteland world that's been devastated by catastrophic events; examples include Fallout, Borderlands, Gears of War, and Left 4 Dead

Fantasy: contains many things that are not scientifically possible, such as magic, dragons, demons, etc.; examples include Dragon Age, Silent Hill, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry

I personally prefer sci-fi, but maybe that's just because mass effect has really given me a soft spot for that setting.

You can call me a fantasy guy. I'm the guy who will pick up any game as long as it has dragons and knights and such in it.

Yeah, post-apocolyptic is technically a subgenre of Sci-Fi, but like I was saying, there's so many games that use this setting that it deserved its own category.

I would consider L4D (my favorite game) post apocolytic, so I'll go with that. Also fantasy because I love RPG's like Tales Of Vesperia and Star Ocean.

I like various settings for games. On the sci-fi front, I like Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 as well as Bioshock, as well as some of the Star Wars games. On the modern front, I like COD MW 1 and 2. On fantasy, I like Final Fantasy (awaiting XIII) and whatnot. Right now, the main games I'm playing on my 360 are Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, and Assassin's Creed.

i chose science fiction because that is what my mind preferred to go with at the time. low and behold, over forty votes.

command and conquer 3 is like that. in the story the game has, it has an alien invasion then everything that would happen after that. everything else is kind of not like science fiction. command and conquer 4 appears to be a dissapointment.

I'd put AC as historical rather than Sci-Fi; yeah it's got the sci-fi twist to it, but the setting would be far better described as historical.

Yeah it's kind of weird how horror games kind of skirt several different settings. Silent Hill would be fantasy, Resident Evil would be Sci-Fi, and L4D would be post-apocolyptic.

I dont really have a preference.

I love fantasy, but its not perfect. If we're talking about Tolkien-esque fantasy, then I think its a bit overdone. I mean, I *love* games like Oblivion and all, but I'd like to start seeing more creativity. Then we've got Final Fantasy-like fantasy, which is a mix of Tolkien and post-industrial modernization, which I always find a refreshing, yet somehow illogical mix.

Modern can be great, as certain games strive for great 'realism'. Its also probably the easiest to critique, as there's fairly obvious comparisons we can all make.

Sci-Fi is great in that it takes a fairly educated person to create a 'believable' future and the full scope of the universe creates some seriously open doorways in terms of creativity. But that creativity isn't always there. All relevant aliens in most sci-fi games tend to be fairly humanoid(2 arms, 2 legs, head with 2 eyes, torso, etc), and thats always caught me as a bit short-sighted.

Historical is great, too. I've always been interested in history, unlike a lot of people, and humanity's past is always interesting to 'play', as its always fun to imagine how different things were back in the day, ya know?

Post-apocalyptic is probably my least favorite, to be honest. And its funny, cuz I'm a huge 'disaster movie' fan, but I dont like playing in the same bleak environments for an entire game. Its somehow just a little dull. I'm just starting Fallout 3 right now, and I have to say the whole landscape just isn't as 'inspiring' as Oblivion was.

I'm a fantasy guy myself. I like the big worlds, filled with things like dense forest to go through, moutains to climb, temples to explore etc. I feel they offer the most diverse world and typically encourage exploration. Next up would be post apocalyptic because its interesting to explore the world that use to be there and it can make for some interesting characters. Number 3 would be Sci Fi, the exotic locals, the aliens, flying cars and space magic, whats not to like?

^You know the thing about aliens being humanoid is sort of evolutionary common sense. They could make aliens a floating mass of tentacles and eyes, but certain physical attributes are necessary to operate tools. If you cant even use a hammer, its highly unlikely your species will be exploring the great beyonds of space. And it would be a lack of imagination to solve everything with space magic.

fallout 3 was one of the first gamesi played on the x-box 360. post apocalyptic. i found oncei left the vault and was on the ultimate quest to find my father, the lack of weapons to help defend myself was unhelpful.

You make some good points. However, on sci-fi, some popular franchises actually take the time to explain why most "alien" lifeforms are bipedal like humans. In Star Trek, the I believe the basic explanation is that we all originated from some master race. In Mass Effect, they basically say that the bipedal form is that natural progression of evolution for intelligent sentient beings; even though there are intelligent lifeforms in other shapes in that universe.

And not all fantasy is a Tolkien knockoff; Silent Hill is a prime example.

I prefer historical because I love history, and you learn something while your playing the game. Fantasy is great like oblivion, lotr, and such. Sci fi such as halo is good but can get sometimes boring with the unbelievable storylines. Modern isn't good because it puts too many bad thoughts in kids minds. Apocalyptic like fallout is great and scary at the same time. I prefer historical but that's just an opinion.

Yea, I realize some games(or shows or movies)'justify' their unoriginal bipedal aliens with some single line of dialogue, but it still lacks creativity, if you ask me.Seems like the easy way out to make aliens thatare easily interacted with.

And I know not all fantasy it a Tolkien ripoff. But its usually what people mean when they say a 'fantasy' setting. Silent Hill, though, I'd place in the 'modern' category. Its a very twisted take on it, but its still modern by most standards, if you ask me.

Interseresting; I still wouldn't lump silent hill in with modern, because games dealing with spirits and demons cross over the line of believability.
