it's a tough choice... i think i have to say Mass Effect though. even though the combat can be flawed at times (such as the mission i am playing through right now...grr) and some of the indoor environments are repetitive, i've never seen such an interesting story and interesting characters in a game. plus, the world (or worlds) is massive. i've been playing it for about 12-13 hours and i've only gone through two or three central story missions. everything is just so...engrossing.
runners up:
1. Bioshock - probably the first game that made me feel emotions other than anger or happiness. it really paves the way for future games in all genres.
2. Crackdown - ok, so it's really nothing compared to Mass Effect and Bioshock, but Crackdown's extremely open world and awesome usage of superpowers is so addictive that i would be playing to this day had my save not been mysteriously deleted a few weeks after i beat the game...i love how you can explore every nook and cranny of the world in whichever way you choose.
3. Eternal Sonata - i'd have to say that ES just barely nudges Halo 3 out of the 3rd position. it's bright visuals, excellent music, and the mixture of turn based and real time combat using light and shadow are all things that had been sorely lacking on the 360.
