So, i have a question for everyone on this board. I have friends that play "underrated" games, games like Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata, and they HATE most of the games i play such as Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Dead Rising, Gears, FEAR. They claim that im not a real gamer because i dont enjoy JRPG games, or "underrated" games. I just think my friends are trying to be the
emo kids of video games claiming to like what most people dont, and hating what most people like. Reason im asking this is because ive started hearing this from more than just my friends, is there any truth to me not being a real gamer because i like FPS games? I mean i love Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4. Dead rising is one of my favorite games, and i LOVE Oblivion, which my friends say is an inslut to the RPG world.

I think if you play video games and enjoy video games, then your a real gamer. Am i any "less of a gamer" because i dont like games that are supposed to be for "gamers?"

What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for any imput guys.

Haha, thanks man. I mean i love multiplayers games where i can actually show off my rank (Halo 3 and COD4) and let people know im good at it. You cant really show off skill in Blue Dragon or Eternal Sonata. IMO games like that are for kids that dont like interacting with other people, i mean they may be good games, but i dont think it makes you any less of a gamer for liking/disliking a specific game.

What I have come to realize with people that don't like Halo 3, Gears of War, or even COD4 is that they usually suck at playing those types of games. If you could just get them to have a gaming party with you sometime, and compete against them...you would soon realize why they don't like them. I have friends that are the same way, and everytime they pick up a FPS or a game a-like they get really frustrated and say something stupid like: "If this were Blue Dragon, I would be kicking some serious a**!" AREAL gamer can play any game anytime, no matter what kind of game it is!

Your friends sound like a drag. It is imortant to keep your mind open to the different possibilities gaming wise. But ou problably don't like Blue Dragon because it isn't any good. Eternal Sonata is better but not much. And as for them thinking that Obivion is not good because it doesn't fit into the normal RPG mold, well that is just unfortunate for them because Oblivion is awesome!!!!

Shooters are great but on occasion there are some rpg's and strat games that shine in their own regard. Try them and if you don't like them at least you had an open mind. Gears rocks!!!!

I own systems starting way back from the atari, and I have quite a range of games for a collection ranging from every style of gaming, and all I have to say is that right now there really aren't any good RPG (besides Oblivion soon to add Mass Effect) JRPG, or games a-like for the 360 yet. Most games realeased are community games played online with people from all over the world. Those are the most popular and hyped games cause people like them.

What was awful about them?

Those are not exactly top notch JRPG titles. Hopefully Lost Odyssey will be much better than BD.

Mature gamers can handle dumb remarks made by kids and simply mute them, play the game and have fun.

I think the main problem with JRPGs is that the combat is not smooth. It gets boring to have to wait your turn to attack. I think if JRPGs were totally in real-time, then they would be much more popular.

I thought they were boring. I hated the story, I hated the combat system in them, and in BD JESUS!! i hated the cut scenes, it just wasnt my kinda game. Its obvious that you like those kinda games, but i dont think that makes you less of a gamer. But it seems tome that your just like my friends, that you think im less of a gamer. And out of the games i listed you picked Halo, i play more than Halo. Rainbow Six, GRAW, Gears, FEAR, Timeshift, Call of Duty 4, just not Halo. Lol, Halo is everyones favorite game to pick out of a group

NO, they are wrong. Real gamers are people who enjoy what they play and don't give a crap about what anyone else says. You are a real gamer my friend. I enjoy underrated games, but I also enjoy the "big name" titles too. I don't understand why your friends seem to like force it on you. I mean, I have friends who hate some of the games I play, but I don't care. I will still play w/e game I want to just because I can.

i think a REAL gamer doesnt need to constantly bash every game THEY are uncomfortable playing. if you dont like it then keep playing what your playing. beauty is in the eye of the beholder and diff. people like diff things. i only classify a REAL gamer as some one who constantly plays games and loves em, despite genre. but bashing great games just because every one else likes em is pointless! open your eyes and you (referring to any one) just might like it

Same here, Eternal Sonata was a bit better than Blue Dragon, but the main reason i didnt like it is cause i didnt like the combat system. I loved the real-time stuff in Oblivion where you just swing when you want to, not taking turns.

Like the guy said, hopefully they will come out with some better JRPG games, because i have an open mind to games, id like to play a good JRPG that i will enjoy.

............... Sarcasm? :?

Oblivion:

Generic storyline, 2-3 unique dungeon designs, they only used like 4 voice actors, it's pointless to lvl up because of the balance crap, simplified rpg elements. Yeah no JRPG can compete with that:roll:

It just gets old after a while. Because when i sign into Xbox Live, they see what game im playing and i get flooded with messages about "Hey noob, wanna come play a real game?" or "Lol, (insert shooter) again huh?"

Gamers Game...Fanboys Pick Sides.... You play wha you want. If your not into FPS then your not. That doesn't make u any less of a gamer just not a fan of FPS. A true Gamer just games no matter what the system. Thats what i consider a real gamer. If you sit on one system(by choice only) and put down other systems cause you don't play them or dont want to then your not a gamer. Gamers, or should I say real gamers just want to game without any questions asked. I will end with my motto:

Real Gamers Game.....Fanboys Pick Sides......

Most people like FPS because of the pace, competition, and gore. Anyone who plays games more than on an occassional basis is a gamer. I'm 22 andhave been playing games since Atari VCS, ColecoVision, and NES. I consider myself a gamer because I enjoy EVERY genre of games there is. I've played through the FFs, Halos, MGSs, Maddens, Tony Hawks, etc... Everyone would call me a gamer because of my knowledge of videogames while growin up. So I guess it depends on what you feel makes you a gamer. Personally, I don't really care for rank and online competition (because of the new age of gamers who only care about wins and rank)but I love sports games. Ay, if you believe you're a gamer then who's to tell you that you're not?

Besides, when you get a REAL life, you'll realize that there are MUCH more important things than games, like bills.

JRPG's are made the way they are made because the Japanese are fond of that structure. I doubt any good JRPG devs will go in the Oblivion direction anytime soon.

Mass Effect is looking very good. I love Bioware games. Only their WRPG's can compete with great JRPG's imho.

What is a "Real Gamer", a miserable pile of secrets? - Castlevania SOTN (sort of)

But seriously, what makes a person a 'Real Gamer'? IMO, it's someone who is passionate about the games they play and/or collect. It doesn't matter what type of games you play as everyone has different tastes. I personally like all types of games, including WRPG, JRPG, FPS, racers, action adventure, etc. It doesn't matter what type of games you play, just that you play games. The fact that you care what your friends think about your gaming ability/preference proves that you're a Real Gamer.

Congrats, welcome to the club!!!

I play all those games your friends play but not because they are underrated. Your friends just don't seem to like what you like. I don't think that makes you any less of gamer than them though. I like some popular games and I like some unpopular games. Your friends are kinda stupid. Tell them I said so, especially about Oblivion. That is one the best games period, rpg or otherwise.

who gives a damn, be yourself and like what you like...if you sit there playing tetris all day or playing madden all day, your playing a game you like to play. I wouldn't say your a hardcore gamer if all you like is sports games...but you are a hardcore sports gamer if you play all them...if you only like shooters your a shooter gamer. If you like playing crosswords you like word games...to each his own, it's all in good fun.

I LOVE TO PLAY GAMES!!! I'm more of a FPS and RACER but I love all games if they are a good quality game. Good graphics, good story, good gameplay - It all amounts to quality, and ofcourse some people like THIS and some people like THAT so everyone has their opinion and we must respect that. To me it comes down to playing ALOT. If you play ANY game(s) ALOT then your a GAMER in your own right. HAPPY GAMING!!!!!

Why should somebody care what others say about his gaming choices?

In fact, what really matters is that you enjoy what you play, regardless if it is FPS, RPG, JRPG or whatever.

And don't forget, games are intended for entertainment and for having good time, and each game is serving it with its own ways.

So chill out , you are a real gamer and ,if you ask me, a lot more than your friends.

Honestly at first I completely agree'd with the OP - your friends shouldn't make fun of you for whatever type of game you play. But as I read further down and noticed your reaction - "Jrpg's are for kids" etc etc - I'm guessing your the one that actually makes fun of your friends for playing those games - and you came on here to prove a point.

When I first got into gaming, I was a hardcore rpg fan, this was back in the NES days (i'm 25) and I never really liked FPS - mainly because the little bit of Doom or Quake I did try, I got owned fast by my friends that played it hardcore. And I didn't play them much after that until we had a network party and my friends begged me to play Swat 4. It took a while to get used to, but I ended up loving it. Now I enjoy FPS like FEAR, Swat 4, Battlefield 2. Going from reading story, and strategic battle to twitch sensitive; fast paced controls can be rough, especially when 1 person has played FPS most of his gaming career is going against someone who spent most of his gaming career as an RPG enthusiast.

I think instead of bashing, or fighting with your friends, try introducing them to the right FPS game. Swat 4 was great because it was Co-Op, I got to play with people who have played FPS as much as I have rpg's, on the same team, to give me time to learn and adjust - eventually after several other sessions, I was playing the online portion against other players.

The fact that your asking other people if your a 'real' gamer, makes me wonder if you know what it means. I don't have to ask anyone or get confirmation. I enjoy games, I play them, I love to do so, I'm a gamer.

I never said JRPGs are for kids. and if YOU would have read further down you would have came accross a post that said "I for one am not going to bash people for playing games i dont like"

Yeah those are just people who think they are super cool for playing less popular games. A gamer is just someone who likes to play video games, doesn't matter what kind of games they play.

People rrrrreally need to stop arguing over video games. Just play them and have fun!

You cant really show off skill in Blue Dragon or Eternal Sonata. IMO games like that are for kids that dont like interacting with other people

Guess someone else named jchaff said that...

Insult? WTF?? one of the best games i have played in my life from a long while.

being a real gamer is to play what you love and dont hate what people love , for example , you love FPS because you love FPS , then you are a real gamer , but when you love FPS because everybody loves FPS then you are not a real gamer , and vice versa for hating games.

Eternal Sonata doesnt seem underrated i would have bought that game if it wasnt 20 hours short.
