This game strays from the normal 3rd person shooter formula and makes it a great experience.

User Rating: 8.8 | Freedom Fighters PS2
This game was released on 2003 and it is now 2006, so I will be reviewing as if it were 2003 to be fair. And even though this game is old, it is still a great game. Freedom Fighters takes place in an alternate universe where the U.S.S.R. gained control of Mexico and Cuba, and they are now invading the U.S.. They have taken out the military and it is up to "rebels" to defeat the Russians and drive them out of the U.S.. It takes place in New York, where you must gain territory back from the Russians such as warehouses, harbors, and even movie theaters. In Freedom Fighters you play as a plumber who is pulled into a resistence group that is trying to drive back the U.S.S.R.. You start out as a recruit, but you slowly gain more respect and gain the ability to control more freedom fighters. That is the key to succeeding in Freedom Fighters, having soldiers and knowing how to use them. You must let your teammates do the work, while you stand in the backlines of your squad. This may sound boring, since if you try to go all Rambo you get killed instantly, it is very refreshing to see a game like this. It requires a lot of strategy to use your squad to the fullest with the commands Defend, Follow, and Push Forward. You are able to gain more teammate slots by getting charisma, which you get by completing secondary objectives and healing injured civilians. The gameplay of Freedom Fighters is a very refreshing from the standard 3rd person shooter.
The technical side of Freedom Fighters is done very well also. The graphics are very good (for 2003), but may seem very outdated today. They are good enough so that you won't mind them after playing games like GoW, Black, or RE4. The sound is also done superbly (for 2003) with the music and the voices. Although the commands can get really annoying. The value of Freedom Fighters is good as well, because it has a multi-player mode and you just want to play it over and over. Overall, Freedom Fighters is a very refreshing 3rd person shooter, that requires a lot of strategy, and makes a great game that no one should miss.
