As far as video games based off of anime shows go, Fullmetal Alchemist 2 is as good as they get.

User Rating: 7.5 | Fullmetal Alchemist 2: Curse of the Crimson Elixir PS2
I bought this game about two years ago, simply because it was based off of the Fullmetal Alchemist television series. Having already played a Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and Yu-Gi-Oh! video game prior to playing this, I expected a short, semi-insulting game based off of a great anime series. I was a bit surprised when I began playing the game, having seen cutscenes in the game that were of the television show standards, and actual voice actors doing a reasonable job on their parts. Of course, it's not the best video game for the Playstation 2, but it's above the standards of the Dark Cloud series (I personally found the series a bit amusing, but nonetheless repetitive).

The storyline starts off along the same general plot as the Fullmetal Alchemist television series, following the adventures of Edward and Alphonse Elric through the events in Lior and the events with Scar. However, the game eventually begins to slowly shift towards a different storyline that is equally amusing. [SPOILERS AHEAD] When Edward and Alphonse discover mysterious clues of a false Philosopher's Stone at each of the sights of the prior events, they become suspicious and curious. On an investigation in a town that seems to have been abandoned by its civilians, Edward and Alphonse find that everyone has been turned into strange, Golem monsters created using some kind of high-level alchemy. Later, Edward and Alphonse run into a mysterious demon-like woman, and here strange lover in a cave near Resembool.

A series of intertwining events lead Edward and Alphonse to the strange desert city, where an entire population was rumored to have vanished over night. What really happened to those people, is almost to mortifying for Edward and Alphonse to believe. It would seem that the strange man had used the people in a forbidden form of alchemy, to attempt to forge a Philosopher's Stone.

It's actually quite an amusing storyline. Although the actual gameplay of the game could have been better, the storyline is amusing enough to make the game worth $20. Also, in the game's seperate storyline, they reveal some key information that explains a bit about some of the mysteries that were not explained in the animated series.

One of the built in features of this game, allows you to play as Edward, however, you can command Alphonse quite easily, while never having to play as him. Unlike other games, where your allies may wander off or just plain disobey you, in this game, Alphonse seems to obey your commands quite well. Some of your enemies are a bit of a joke, especially early on in the game, but give it some time, it will get more challenging.

There are some obvious flaws in the graphics, however, the flaws seem to make the whole game flow better, and add to the cartoon-like appearance of the game. For instance, you may be walking down a long street, and suddenly the rooftops on the buildings next to you may vanish or blend with the sky. As far as the character graphics look, they appear quite smooth and original.

As far as the audio sounds, expect to hear some of the same tracks you've heard every week on the Fullmetal Alchemist episodes. That's right, a lot of the tunes from the soundtrack have been brought to the game, with a few new original ones that make for an overall good experience.

Playing as Edward and Alphonse could never be easier. Unlike the other games that I have played in the series, it is quite easy to control Edward and Alphonse. This game has a spectacular storyline, and decent graphics. I would recommend this game to any fans of the animated series, any fans of RPGs based off of TV shows, and some fans of quick, yet fun RPGs.
