A Pixel-Perfect Port Of A Perfectly Good Arcade Game!

User Rating: 10 | Galaga NES

WOAH!!!! I do NOT know how I could've possibly MISSED reviewing THIS game before now! It's an absolute all-time classic. While this game certainly didn't invent the space-shooting video game genre, it definitely helped to perfect it. Sure, the game is rather primitive by today's standards; but you got to remember, this game was originally made all the way back in 1981! By the standards of THAT time, this game was REALLY impressive! Even though this game only HAD eight bits of graphics to work with, pretty much all you needed back than was a tough but fair difficulty setting, a compelling challenge that would keep you coming back for more, and a good, simple control scheme that's easy to learn; with the enemy A.I. always difficult to predict! While there's certainly not much in the way of music or sounds, it definitely helps to keep the player focused on the task at hand, trying to shoot down as many alien enemies as you can. A unique mechanic of this game (revolutionary at the time), was that you could LET one of your fighters get captured by a Galaga. But if you shoot down the Galaga when it's coming at you, you'll FREE the fighter, and it will join your CURRENT fighter to give you double the amount of fire-power, perfect for getting past all those challenging bonus stages, and racking up a high score. While the game wasn't designed with an ending in mind, the real challenge is seeing how far you can go, and how high of a score you can get on the way. And the NES port is pixel-perfect, as nothing is lost in the translation. Best of all, it's easier than ever to play and enjoy the NES port, as it's now available to play as part of "Namco Museum Archives Vol. 2" for the Nintendo Switch, with a rewind and save feature to help you get farther than ever before. I highly recommend this game to see how this game helped to really refine the space-shooting video game genre. Enough said, true believers!
