Pretty good version of Galaga, too bad there is no multiplayer like in most of the remakes of classic arcade games.
The old school graphics of Galaga look pretty much the same as they looked in the arcades. The screen is shrunken to make it seem like your playing on the actual arcade machine. What then replaces the empty space on both sides of the playing field is some neat pictures, of space ships and makes the game look a little nicer. At first I thought it would annoy the crap out of me, but it doesn't at all. A big problem is the friend notification window, which can really screw up your game at the worst possible time.
The sound effects and music are pretty much identical to the actuall game, and blend with graphics extremely well. Everything in Galaga is just old school and that is how it should be.
There really won't be too much value to Galaga unless your a die hard fan and you think it never gets old. You could probably play it once or twice a week and it would be fun. Leaderboards help increase the competion whether it would be with friends or competing for number one. The achievements are really easy to get with the level select system, so those probably won't keep you playing for too long. Its five bucks like every other classic Xbox Live Arcade game.
The gameplay is really simple and easy to pick up and play. It controls really well. Again you play as a space ship in space and have to shoot down each wave of enemies. The enemies consist of a variety of insects, and a few other animals like a scorpion or stingray. There also is a blue space ship and a galboss, which I have no idea what one is. You start out with 3 lives, and earn a new one I think every twenty-thousand points. You may shoot at a steady rate with the A button, or fire in short two shot bursts. Both methods have there ups and downs, I reccomend you do a little bit of both. There are boss enemies at the top of the screen and they swoop down usually with their posse and if you shoot them down instead of the other enemies you'll receive bonus points, and also if any ship is on the move rather than standing still. Bosses also have a tractor beam, which can capture your ship and turn it into an enemy. You may shoot down the ship for an achievement, or shoot down the boss while its moving to form a dual fighter which also is an achievement. The dual fighter makes life a lot easier and if your take a hit you'll only loose the one part of your ship and get to keep playing.
Galaga on the Xbox Live Arcade is a great remake of the original game and is worth the five bucks even if you haven't had any expierence with the original game though I reccomend downloading the trial first, because the game doesn't last too long unless your a die hard fan.
