Avengers Endgame: 10 Key Things We Learned After Watching New Exclusive Footage

Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters in just a couple more weeks. Disney has only provided a few brief looks at the movie, but recently the company screened around 10 minutes of footage for select press on its studio lot in California. Because so much of Endgame's story has been kept tightly under wraps, we're actually able to glean quite a bit from even a brief look at the film.

Disney debuted a total of two scenes at the screening, one of which was also shown recently at Cinemacon. The other, however, had never before been seen outside of Disney. Disney has since released a partial clip of one of the scenes we viewed.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo introduced the footage at Disney, explaining that they've put their hearts and souls into the franchise, and they can't wait for everyone to see the culmination of ten years' work. After the brief screening, they quickly retreated to another building on Disney's expansive lot to continue putting the finishing touches on Endgame. With such a short time left before the movie's release, they hopefully don't have too much work left to do.

Avengers: Endgame hits theatres on April 26. Tickets went on sale recently, and unsurprisingly, pre-sales are setting records and initially crashed ticket-selling websites. Given how many different haircuts and facial hair styles various characters have sported throughout the Endgame trailers we've seen so far, there's been lots of speculation about how much time will have passed between the end of Infinity War and the start of Endgame. In this footage, we got a specific answer: When Tony records his extremely sad message for Pepper, which appears to be more or less the movie's opening scene, he mentions specifically that he and Nebula have been stranded in space for 22 days.

He also mentions that their oxygen will run out by the following morning. Given that both he and Nebula will eventually make it back to Earth--judging by other glimpses we've seen, at least--we can assume their situation is about to change. So we can guess the span of time between Tony and co.'s battle with Thanos and Tony and Nebula somehow finding their way back to Earth will be about three weeks.

Tony suffered major wounds during the battle with Thanos at the end of Infinity War--in fact, Thanos likely believed he had mortally wounded Tony when he said he hopes the people still alive at the end will remember him. That gut stab seemed particularly nasty.

But we know from trailers that Tony survives, and now we know from this new footage how: Nebula apparently has some skill at healing, as Tony remarks in his message to Pepper that, despite contracting some kind of infection following the battle, he's quickly recovering, thanks to Nebula's help.

Tony and Nebula haven't spent all their time in space convalescing and feeling sorry for themselves. Tony says in his message that they've also been working hard to repair their ship, in an attempt to make it back to civilization. The fuel cells were damaged at some point, but in the clip we saw, Tony says they've managed to fix things up well enough to eek around two days' of flight time from the battered vessel. Of course, given that they're "light years from the nearest 7/11," as Tony puts it, we're not sure how much that's going to help them.

Part of the footage we saw included what appears to be the very opening scene of the entire movie. As the Marvel logo appeared, the song "Dear Mr. Fantasy" by Traffic twanging in the background, the scene opened on Tony and Nebula playing paper football--you know, that game where you fold a piece of paper into a triangle shape and take turns trying to flick it through a goal post made by your opponent's hands. If this really is the movie's first scene, it's a surprisingly light way to open what will surely be a dark chapter in MCU history.

Iron Man and Nebula have clearly done their best to survive--Tony's wounds are healing, and they've tried to repair the ship. But at the end of his message for Pepper, Tony reveals that he doesn't expect to survive. They're about to run out of oxygen, and the ship is still in poor shape. He signs off with an extremely sad prediction: that he'll drift off into death while thinking of Pepper. Yikes.

The next scene we saw likely isn't consecutive with the first--in other words, there are some things in between that we missed. That's clear, considering the scene featured Nebula on Earth with Steve, Nat, Rhodey, Rocket, Thor, and Bruce in immediate lead-up to the moment above, which we previously glimpsed in one of the latest Endgame trailers. It seems to be shortly after Captain Marvel's arrival. Right before this, Nebula is present during a conversation about taking the fight to Thanos, although Tony's absence in the scene is puzzling.

The remaining Avengers quickly learn one thing about Carol Danvers: She is extremely confident. Her reaction to learning about Thanos is essentially, "Why aren't we fighting him already?" and when Bruce wonders aloud why it should turn out any differently from the last time they clashed with the Mad Titan, she answers that this time, they have her.

Carol may be the ace up the Avengers' sleeve in their next fight with Thanos, but they have another advantage now too: Nebula, who knows Thanos far better than anyone else present. She reveals to the remaining Avengers, including Captain Marvel, that she knows where Thanos went: "The Garden," on a distant planet. As Rhodey quips, it's his retirement plan--and they're going to crash it.

At the end of Infinity War, just after Thanos snapped, the Infinity Stones and the gauntlet housing them appeared pretty messed up. Clearly they were still functional enough for Thanos to teleport to his retirement world, and for him to have that brief conversation with Gamora's soul, but their status beyond that is basically unknown. However, we learned in this footage that the Stones may still be functional enough for the Avengers to use them to undo the Snap--at least, that's their immediate plan.

The scene reveals that the Avengers have detected a second energy spike similar to the one that occurred on Earth during the Snap. In other words, they believe Thanos used the Stones again--and it helps them pinpoint the villain's current location. That second use might have simply been the teleportation at the end of Infinity War--or it might be something else we've yet to learn about.

After the revelation that they know Thanos's location, the remaining Avengers waste no time: With Captain Marvel in their corner, they prepare to take the fight to Thanos. We've glimpsed the scene already in a trailer or two, but this footage confirmed that the shot of several characters heading into space is the beginning of their counter-attack. Of course, several of them haven't been to space before, despite the increasingly cosmic nature of these movies--as Rocket points out in the clip.

It's a funny moment, but more than that, it has us excited to find out what will happen next. Avengers: Endgame's April 26 release date can't arrive quickly enough.
