11 Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters We Want To See At The Nintendo Direct

Nintendo is airing its first proper Nintendo Direct in more than a year tomorrow, February 17. The broadcast will run for roughly 50 minutes and promises to bring news on upcoming and already available games, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate--which means we'll likely learn the identity of the game's next DLC fighter. Ahead of the broadcast, read on to see what characters we still hope will come to the game as DLC.

Since its debut more than 20 years ago, the Super Smash Bros. series has been a veritable celebration of gaming history, and that holds particularly true for its latest entry, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While previous Smash Bros. games have featured many of Nintendo's biggest mascots along with other gaming icons like Pac-Man and Sonic the hedgehog, Ultimate towers over them in its sheer size, boasting the largest roster in the series to date--and it only continues to grow in the months following its release.

Ever since the game's launch, Nintendo has been steadily introducing more fighters to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC. The game's first Fighters Pass brought an additional five characters to the fray, and the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 is adding six more newcomers on top of that, which means the game will feature more than 80 characters in total when all of the DLC fighters finally arrive.

As fantastic as the game's base roster is, the most exciting--and unexpected--additions have come as DLC. Joker from Persona 5, Banjo and Kazooie, Steve from Minecraft, and most recently Final Fantasy VII villain Sephiroth were all released as DLC fighters, and there are still three more mystery characters on the way to the game. Who these newcomers are remains anyone's guess at this point, but we're still holding out hope that we'll see characters from other Nintendo and third-party franchises. Can you imagine how awesome it would be if, say, Captain Toad or Crash Bandicoot joined the Ultimate lineup? Although there are only a few DLC fighters remaining, we still have so many dream fighters on our wish list, so here are 11 characters we most want to see added to the game as DLC.

For our thoughts about how Ultimate turned out, read our review. GameSpot critic Edmond Tran gave the game a 9/10 and said: "Situational downers don't stop Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from shining as a flexible multiplayer game that can be as freewheeling or as firm as you want it to be. Its entertaining single-player content helps keep the game rich with interesting things to do, as well as bolstering its spirit of loving homage to the games that have graced Nintendo consoles. Ultimate's diverse content is compelling, its strong mechanics are refined, and the encompassing collection is simply superb."

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is truly an amazing celebration of Nintendo's history and all the franchises that have graced its myriad consoles. There's still much more in store via the future Challenger Packs, so which DLC characters do you want to appear in Smash Bros. Ultimate? Let us know in the comments below.

    Captain Toad

    Captain Toad

Super Smash Bros. rosters are generally dominated by the expected heroes and villains. What I want to see is another character like Animal Crossing's Villager who is a little more unconventional. Captain Toad may seem harmless, but the idea of him transforming into a fighter who can go toe-to-toe with Bowser, Ganon, or precious Mario (you know Captain Toad hates him and his proclivity for jumping and hogging the spotlight) would get me more interested in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate than anything else.

He may not have the makings of a prototypical fighter, but to me that's what would make him more interesting. I'd be curious to see how Nintendo finds a workaround for his inability to jump--maybe he could throw his backpack into the air before leaping. He has a variety of tools and abilities at his disposal in Treasure Tracker (a pickaxe, an off-screen turnip gun, the ability to pull things out of the ground) that could be leveraged as weapons in Smash. And imagining a matching Treasure Tracker stage--one that messes with camera perspectives--is even more exciting.

Captain Toad may not have the glitz and glamor of other names, but his unique nature would make him a worthwhile member of the roster. | Chris Pereira

    Crash Bandicoot

    Crash Bandicoot

Crash never made it into PlayStation All Stars, but he deserves a chance to throw down. With the N. Sane trilogy on Switch, I think it's time for everyone's favorite marsupial to do the same.

Crash's moveset is so easy to envision: spinning attacks, throwing wumpa fruit, and a Final Smash that slaps a golden Aku Aku mask on his face, charging him up like some kind of Australian Super Saiyan. If Crash were added to the roster, elements of his games could also be incorporated into the Smash universe. Maybe a standard mask could be picked up by anyone. Maybe the game's signature crates could be added to Smash's group of containers like barrels and party balls. One thing's for sure: making Crash a playable character should also mean Coco joining as an assist trophy.

Let's talk stages. The Crash Bandicoot series has been all over the world, from the Great Wall of China to Ancient Egypt to a crazy techno-centric future. Why not take the "warped" mentality of Crash 3 and have fighters bounce between those crazy locations? I can already picture Neo Cortex floating around in the background of the outer space phase of the map. | Tony Wilson

    Toon Zelda/Tetra

    Toon Zelda/Tetra

The Smash Bros. series has seen many Links: Young Link, Toon Link, regular Link, and now, Breath of the Wild Link. But there's only one Zelda. Zelda/Sheik is one of the standout characters, of course, but it's time for something new. Tetra is a badass pirate queen with a sword, and her Princess Zelda transformation has a bow with light arrows--among other possible weapons. (Her Hyrule Warriors incarnation has a pistol, for example.) She's scrappy, she's sassy, her pirate ship is already a Smash stage, and she already has an Amiibo.

Even if she didn't transform like her standard counterpart, Tetra or Toon Zelda would both make sense among the ranks of the top Smash fighters. And it's about time. Plus, I just really want Wind Waker HD to come to Switch. | Kallie Plagge

    Geno

    Geno

Since his debut in Super Mario RPG, fans have been clamoring for ♡♪!? (also known as Geno for those who struggle to pronounce his true name). While a true Super Mario RPG sequel will likely never happen, there is hope for the badass Star Road warrior to appear in Smash. When Nintendo started to release character announcement trailers for the Wii U and 3DS versions, I'd sit on the edge of my seat hoping he'd be revealed every time. When it came to the final DLC character reveal, Nintendo found a way to get my hopes up, only to crush them instantly. They showed off Geno, but not the way anyone wanted. We were told Geno was available...but as a Mii Gunner costume. While I was happy to see they acknowledged his existence, it was still disappointing to see he was still not a playable fighter.

If he were to be added, he'd make an excellent ranged fighter and a welcome roster addition compared to the influx of sword-based fighters in recent games. Geno Beam (or even Geno Flash) would be perfect as a charge attack and Geno Whirl could be used similar to Samus's missile with the side-B attack. For a Final Smash, Geno Blast would look gorgeous as rays of light come flashing down to devastate his opponents. While I know deep down that it's a long shot, I'm still hoping that somehow he'll find his way onto the roster. With the inclusion of Square Enix's Cloud in the roster, the door is now open for Geno. I, for one, am eagerly awaiting his arrival. | Gajan Kulasingham

    Crono

    Crono

The Chrono series, outside of the thoroughly excellent DS re-release and the not-so-good PC port, has been silent for a long time. But aside from the business and development reasons that the seminal RPG only received one semi-sequel in Chrono Cross, a character crossover with the next Smash Bros. actually makes some weird sense.

The biggest argument for Crono is that Cloud was playable in Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. The protagonist from Final Fantasy VII is a staunchly third-party character from a Final Fantasy game that never came to a Nintendo console, so there's at least a precedent for that level of crossover. The Final Fantasy VII Remake gives a reason to elevate Cloud's profile (so maybe Aeris or Tifa would be a more-likely candidate). But Crono is such an outstanding character from developer Square's past and its long-running relationship with Nintendo.

The other reason that Cloud makes a good fit is that, despite being yet another character with a sword, his reliance on multi-character attacks mean that he'd have his own unique identity, moveset, and visual flair.

Crono is a long shot character, especially since unlike Final Fantasy, there isn't an official high-definition 3D model of the character available. But who would've guessed that Cloud, Ryu, and Bayonetta would ever be in a Smash game? | Justin Haywald

    Professor Layton

    Professor Layton

The austere professor with his oversized hat may sound like an odd fit for Smash, but as an iconic representative of puzzle gaming on the DS, Professor Layton is long overdue for a spot on the SSB roster.

The best examples for how Layton would work in a fighter is Phoenix Wright, who made an appearance in various Vs. Capcom fighting games, or a character like the peaceful Animal Crossing Villager. Not having a ready-made assortment of combat abilities doesn't rule out their effectiveness in a wacky game like Smash. And as we've seen from several of Layton's adventures, he's an accomplished fencer, so he's ready to throw down with a weapon when the situation calls for it.

And Layton could also introduce fun, interactive stages that play off his previous adventures. Hand-drawn village backgrounds that open up to unlock puzzles, and maybe the characters on the screen would have to try to solve some of the simpler ones in order to avoid hazards from hitting everyone one the screen.

Layton has been a dream addition to Smash for me for a long time, and figuring out how he'd fit into the game doesn't feel like a terribly difficult puzzle. | Justin Haywald

    Tharja

    Tharja

Super Smash Bros. has no shortage of Fire Emblem characters. To be honest, by the time Corrin and Roy rolled around as DLC for Smash 4, I was starting to get sick of them. However, Tharja could add something unique to the roster. Unlike Roy, Marth, Lucina, and Ike, Tharja is a Dark Mage and she could specialize in ranged-attack spells. Sure, Corrin and Robin had a fair amount of medium-range attacks, but in most cases, you’d still want to keep your foes close.

Tharja could utilize a flashy set of dark spells to deliver powerful blows from afar, and quick on her feet to escape close range fighters. The likelihood of Tharja coming to Smash is slim, but I think she would add much more character and personality to the roster than Robin and Corrin did. | Jake Dekker

    Kass

    Kass

While Breath of the Wild was very much Link's show, there was one character who always knew how to make his presence known throughout the young(ish) champion's quest throughout Hyrule--and it always started off with the faint sound of an accordion in the distance. Kass, the traveling storyteller, could spin a memorable yarn about Hyrule's past, but I'd like to think he can also hold his own in a fight against other Nintendo characters.

While we don't ever see Kass fight, that certainly hasn't stopped Nintendo from turning normally passive characters--like Wii Fit Trainer or R.O.B.--into powerhouses on the battlefield. As a member of the bird-like Rito tribe, Kass has the natural gift of flight, potentially making him an agile character in a fight. However, his true gifts lie with his accordion and oratory talents. Much like in Breath of the Wild, Kass can use the power of song to grab the attention of anyone nearby as they listen to him tell the tale of the surrounding environment.

While this may seem a bit gimmicky, Super Smash Bros. tends to shine most when it comes to characters that has a specific purpose. And often times, those characters prove their worth and find an audience among fans. And I for one think that Kass has the potential to prove himself on the battlefield. | Alessandro Fillari

    Waluigi

    Waluigi

If Waluigi can't get his own game, he should at least be added to the Super Smash Bros. roster. Wario has been playable in two previous Smash games, but Luigi's rival, Waluigi, has never been included. Now is the time. Waluigi has already made appearances in Smash as a collectible trophy and assist trophy, and in Brawl, Luigi has a black and purple color swap to make him look similar to his arch-rival. If he's already a part of the Smash universe, then making him playable is an easy transition.

Smash Bros. on the 3DS and Wii U had plenty of Nintendo heroes on their rosters and not enough villains. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's roster could only benefit from adding another fun, fan-favorite antagonist like Waluigi to liven things up with his personal brand of mischief. Throughout the years, his popularity has only been growing. He's sassy, cunning, relatably self-hating, skilled, and ridiculous. Just think about how campy and glorious his taunt would be. It's Waluigi time. | Chastity Vicencio

    Porky Minch

    Porky Minch

Technically, Porky has already made an appearance in Super Smash Bros.; in Brawl, he was one of the boss characters that Ness and Lucas face while fighting in the Subspace Emissary. But that only proves that he make an excellent addition to the fighting game roster.

Although Giygas is the Big Bad in Earthbound, Porky is the malevolent being's willing accomplice. And as the Earthbound sequel, Mother 3, shows, Porky is a resourceful villain who's able to rise above his previous failures to become even more powerful and dangerous. And his appearance in Smash could also bridge the gap between his sniveling uselessness in Earthbound and his powerful but decaying form in Mother 3--a Porky that's just coming into his own powers but also relies on sophisticated gadgetry to pummel his foes.

Most of all, I just want Porky in the game so that there's another direct Nintendo connection to the Earthbound/Mother series. I still haven't given up hope of a Western release of Mother 3...and the Switch would be the perfect console to get that long-awaited port. | Justin Haywald

    The Champions Of Hyrule

    The Champions Of Hyrule

I hope Nintendo will include more Breath of the Wild characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, like the Champions: Revali, Daruk, Urbosa, and Mipha. It would be awesome to see them all added into the game as four separate characters, but realistically, I could see Nintendo making them a single character slot--similar to Pokemon Trainer from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Having the ability to play and freely switch between Revali, Daruk, Urbosa, and Mipha sounds complicated to implement. After all, having access to four separate movesets seems like it would be both a mechanical and balancing nightmare, but I'm holding out for the possibility of the Champions being playable. Imagine launching an opponent upwards into the air with Revali's Gale, and then switching to Daruk to smash them down with his Boulder Breaker. You could even have Mipha revive you if you happen to accidentally get launched out of a stage.

There are a ton of cool possibilities available for the Champions, and given Breath of the Wild's financial and critical success, they ought to be put in the game in some form. At the very least, I hope Nintendo incorporates their moves into Breath of the Wild Link's moveset, or creates an entire stage devoted to them and their Divine Beasts. | Matt Espineli

The Champions would be great, especially after Age of Calamity gave them defined movesets. Though I wouldn't mind Geno. But I'm still hoping for Travis Touchdown, it would be great to get him in Smash before NMH3.

    Rayman.

Alot of this crap is just TERRIBLE... Professor Layton? Seriously?

It's bad enough that Banjo has been the ONLY worthwhile addition out of like 50$ worth of DLC packs.

I would love for a PlayStation All-Stars sequel to happen and see Crash Bandicoot and Spyro in it. Now don't get me wrong, I still don't mind seeing Crash Bandicoot and Spyro going multiplatform, that way their games would sell stronger and it would keep those franchises more popular again just like back in the good ol' (PS1) days.

Since Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker HD remasters were Wii U exclusives, I would like for them to get ported on the Switch, and maybe Paper Mario: Color Splash since I never disliked that game just like those ungrateful, @$$hurt, and stubborn Paper Mario fanboys do.

I would love to see Waluigi become a fighter in Super Smash Bros. but I'm not going to be like one of those toxic Super Smash Bros. fanboys as we know that they are nothing but disrespect.

Anyways I would love to see Conker the Squirrel, Tails, and Rayman become playable fighters in the game!

    My choices:

Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive) - the only DOA character appropriate

Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark) - The only FPS franchise that would make sense for Smash

Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) - Something like the Legend era though...

    Shantae

    Shovel Knight

    Rayman

The Dragonborn (Elder Scrolls: Skyrim) - I mean, Fallout is already repped (via Mii's), which I think is odd that Fallout got repped on Smash BEFORE Elder Scrolls

I want Big Boss (or Naked Snake if you prefer) from MGS. Solid Snake's already in the game and Big Boss is one of those spirit things, so I think they should add him in. It would also be really cool if we got Venom Snake, but I doubt that'll happen since he only appeared in two games.

I’d love to see another Legend of Zelda representative, and I know when people think for a new character to represent the Zelda series they think either Skull Kid or Impa. I’m thinking of a new angle to bring something else to Smash, so brace yourselves - Wolf Link!

Right, I know there’s a bit of a fan base for the inclusion of Lycanroc, which would be rather similar minus the rock manipulation for attacks. There’s a lot of tactics to keep in mind when playing with characters on all fours, but it make for a unique character style.

Some attacks can include twilight, or better yet, twilight portals - to help Wolf Link teleport across the stage in attacks or as a recover? Also there could be a few attacks where Midna lends a hand by dropping through a portal onto Wolf Links back to assist, then teleport away again. Some attacks Midna could help with could include the circular charge attack from Twilight Princess where entities caught in the ring would then be attacked once the charge is released, could be interesting for more than 2 player smashes, hitting each of the characters caught inside one by one and quickly. Or she could help with making a fist with her hair and punching/smashing opponents. She could assist with grabs too? But I don’t want to picture this character as much as a duo like Rosalina & luma and the Pokemon trainer being a trio. The character is more based on Wolf Link and the twilight abilities he could bring to the table but with Midna as an assistance on some attacks.

A few basic attacks like tilts could inherit natural wolf instincts like scratches, bites, lunges & maybe a howl that expels a twilight pulse? I don’t know, there’s a zero chance of him being a DLC character but it’s a nice speculation I thought :)

I'd like to see Geno make it in. If not him, maybe Mallow. Possibly more obscure characters like Jago or Sabrewulf from Killer Instinct or Joanna Dark from Perfect Dark.

This list is really bad. They already said that the dlc is going to be characters that would not typically be in smash so its not gonna be Nintendo characters. The Challengers are going to be other guest characters.

Yes, the list has already been decided. Sakurai has said as much. That doesn't mean we can't submit dream candidates! My list of will-never-happens remains the same as it did before the Wii U Smash. Someone already mentioned Kung-Fu Master Thomas, but I'd also adore A Boy and His Blob and Mag Launcher from the Evolution RPGs. My overall favorite would probably be Klonoa.

dream what you want, this list is completely nonsense as Nintendo has already decided the characters for the dlc. I do not think crash and the other non-nintendo characters will appear in the dlc (including captain toad). Waluigi is useless to add as he DOESN'T have a set of moves.

In my opinion, the new Smash needs characters that are more recognizable and that are somewhat "mainstream" to people who haven't touched a gaming system in years. Here's my list in no particular order: If you have to question who these characters are, throw your system away......All of em!

    1. Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden)

    2. Billy or Jimmy (Double Dragon)

    3. Qbert

    4. Simon Belmont

    5. Arther (Ghost N Goblins)

    6. Strider Hiryu

    7. Karnov

    8. Zitz Rash or Pimples (Battletoads)

    9. One of the Ninja Turtles

    10. Master Splinter

    11. Bill or Lance (Contra)

    12. Rambo (yeah, eff'n Rambo)

    13. Thomas (Kung Fu) or Daniel-San from Karate Kid......Ughhhhh, yeah!!!!!!

    14. Ratchet N Clank (if they can make that happen) Or Jak n the Daxter ....Duck Hunt awaits!!!!

    15. Knuckles

    16. Guile

    17. Goro (someone needs to stand up to Ganondorf)

    18. Bring back the Ice Climbers.....I miss my nana!

    19. Kuros (Wizards and Warriors / Ironsword) Lets see Ike match up to his sword!

    20. Dracula (Castlevania)

I just hope they Add Shadow, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Dr. Eggman. I want to have an Awesome Mario Vs Sonic when they make Super Smash Bros Switch. They also add Ms. Pac-Man and Blinky. And since they added Mega Man who is a Capcom Character, they should add Spider-Man. Also they should add Dark Samus from the Metroid Series and have a Space Pirate as a Assist Trophy. As for our Mii Characters, they can have new fighting moves and Awesome Costumes.

I know that's not going to make you happy, but I want Agitha from the Legend of Zelda or Pichu from The Melee Series, or Kat & Ana from Wario Ware.

I’m really not liking how people are simply asking for their favorite random characters instead of actually good choices. No we don’t want pokémon trainer style characters. Every single time a character is added that is a clone of another character people complain, and yet every single time they ask for more clones, especially with Fire Embelem. We have NES and Lucas? OK let’s add in Porkey, which will also be a clone. I also don’t want characters just because they are cool. Crash is a cool character but he’s mostly been associated with Sony so he makes zero sense. That’s one reason I was never a big fan of Snake in the game. Metal Gear is at this point a Sony franchise even though we got a few games on Nintendo. I also don’t like it how people are requesting random side characters instead of main characters. No I don’t want the nth Fire Embelem character yet again unless it means taking existing ones out. Finally I absolutely hate how people are requesting characters that were originally TV characters that happen to now have video game franchises. No I don’t want Naruto and I don’t want Goku because the whole point of Smash is to have Nintendo characters in a giant fight.

    @beez1717:

If you think about the gaming world's history as a whole and not just Nintendo, there have been 3 stand out rival icons/mascots that have always made the gaming world more competitive as a result... Mario, Crash, and Sonic. A game that offers a platform for this showdown to take place is a must! And Smash is so close to achieving it having already included Sonic as well as bringing PS stars like Cloud, Snake and Bayonetta over, and don't forget that Crash had exclusive Nintendo games on the GB Advance, all his titles have been ported to Gamecube and the Wii, AND the new trilogy is coming to the switch... so the argument that he's not included in the Nintendo universe doesn't hold true... he even featured alongside Donkey Kong and Bowser in Skylanders Imaginators! Last but not least he has gotten voted as the number 1 pick for that character poll in Japan.

a lot of these characters aren't popular enough to grant a spot in smash. I would love neku from the world ends with you, I could see a new pokemon like decideueye since he's pretty popular, probably shovel knight, most likely crash too since they are adding the collection to the switch. Maybe an arms character? If I could pick a true third party character it would be Sora

good choices for the most part, I would really like to see Geno as well. I'm a bit confused about Snake though as it says it has his moves from MGS 1 and 2 but personality from 3.....those are 2 different snakes. Solid snake is the main character of MGS 1,2,and 4 and naked snake (or big boss) is the main character of MGS 3 and 5.
