The summer is almost over, and we've seen blockbuster after blockbuster of super-powered beings punching their way through unbeatable odds. While there may be a little bit of a lull in huge, popcorn-popping movies, here are 15 movies you should see this fall, in the order of their release dates.
All movies open on Fridays unless otherwise noted.
The Disappointments Room
We're kicking off the fall's "must watch" list with a film that has a light horror feel to it. The Disappointments Room follows a couple that moves into a southern mansion, where Dana, the wife played by Kate Beckinsale, discovers a secret room and starts to lose her sanity. The trailer for the film shows potential for some haunting moments, and this could be a good start to the fall film season.
The Disappointments Room opens on September 9.
Blair Witch
17 years after The Blair Witch Project, a new group of people trek into the woods to uncover the mystery of the Blair Witch. While we've seen a few sequels in the past year that try to capture the greatness of the original, more than a decade later (Independence Day: Resurgence, Zoolander 2, Jurassic World), the trailers for Blair Witch have been pretty intense and seem to really be in line with what made the original film so haunting.
Blair Witch opens on September 9.
Snowden
The personal story of Edward Snowden is coming to the big screen. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the man who uncovered the NSA's surveillance activities and leaked that information to the world. Many consider Snowden to be a modern day hero, and some consider him to be a traitor. Regardless, his story is sure to be an interesting one.
Snowden opens on September 16.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
The upcoming September film with the incredibly long title follows a young boy named Jake who discovers a world full of secrets, powerful abilities, and worlds within worlds. The film has a bit of a Harry Potter feel to it, and it feels like an overall fun adventure film with a twist of fantasy. Tim Burton is directing the film, and it looks really interesting.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children opens on September 30.
The Girl on the Train
The trailers for the upcoming October film have a real Gone Girl feel to them. Emily Blunt plays a recently divorced woman who fantasizes about a couple whose home she passes on a train during her daily commute. One morning, she witnesses something shocking and a mystery unfolds from there. It may be reminiscent of something we saw in 2014, but this film should easily stand on its own.
The Girl on the Train opens on October 7.
Under the Shadow
During the Iran-Iraq war, Shideh has to protect her young daughter when the husband is called into battle. A missile hits their apartment building but fails to detonate, and Shideh believes that the missile is cursed with a Djinn, who is attempting to possess her daughter. The trailer for the film looks pretty intense. This is looking to be one of the better horror films of the year.
Under the Shadow opens on October 7.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Jack Reacher is back and doing what he does best: uncovering mysteries and using brute force. In the sequel to the 2012 film, Reacher finds himself in a bit of trouble but can't remember what happened. He'll have to use his skills and smarts to uncover the truth. Check Tom Cruise as Reacher in the newest trailer.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back opens on October 14.
31
Rob Zombie has a new horror film opening in late October. 31 is the story of five carnival workers who are kidnapped and forced to play a deadly game called "31." Like most Zombie films, expect some terrifying moments and an intense pace in what looks like a really jarring film. Check out the trailer, unless people in greasepaint freak you out.
31 opens on October 21, with a limited release on September 1.
Ouija: Origin of Evil
The sequel to the film based on a board game is here. Ouija: Origin of Evil follows a seance scam artist and her two daughters. After receiving a Ouija board, one of the daughters becomes overtaken by a spirit. As far as horror films go, this looks like a typical, fun, popcorn flick. Don't go into the movie expecting it to change your life. Go in expecting a bunch of jump-scares.
Ouija: Origin of Evil opens on October 21.
Rings
Ring, the 2002 horror film based on the hit Japanese movie, is back. Rings follows a young woman who makes a startling discovery about the video that kills you in seven days. Expect to see some new things in this franchise, considering we all live in a digital video age. If you're interested, check out the trailer. However, we'll just warn you that it seems to give everything away.
Rings opens on October 28.
Doctor Strange
After you've gotten your fix of Luke Cage, the next piece of Marvel entertainment coming your way is Doctor Strange. This film will delve into the world of mysticism in the Marvel Universe. A New York surgeon loses his ability to perform after a car accident. He gets a new lease on life and trains in magic. It's a Marvel movie. You're going to see it, so check out the first trailer as a reminder why.
Doctor Strange opens on November 4.
Arrival
No, that Charlie Sheen movie isn't being rereleased in theaters. The Arrival follows linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) as she tries to make contact with alien spacecrafts that have landed on Earth, before humans decide to go to war with them. It's a film about aliens coming to Earth that doesn't involve our landmarks blowing up. This looks like one of the coolest concepts of the fall. Check out the trailer for yourself.
Arrival opens on November 11.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Time for a Harry Potter spin-off! If you love the Potter franchise, you're going to want to see Fantastic Beasts. The trailers have been a blast as the world of mysticism we've come to love heads to New York City during the 1920s. Newt Scamander loses a whole bunch of magical creatures from across the globe while visiting the city. Expect some cool animals and a visually appealing film.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens on November 18.
Bad Santa 2
Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thorton) is back as the delinquent and drunk Santa in Bad Santa 2. Once again, Soke and his sidekick Marcus (Tony Cox) are planning a heist and somehow, it once again involves the return of Thurman Merman. From the looks of the trailers, Bad Santa 2 is going to be exactly what we expect: foul-mouthed and full of crude humor. Would you have it any other way though?
Bad Santa 2 opens on November 23.
Moana
Wrapping up the fall is the new Disney film, Moana. In the upcoming CG movie, navigator Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) teams up with the legendary demi-god Maui (Dwayne Johnson) across the ocean in this adventure. The film will delve into South Pacific folklore, which is cool. What's even cooler is that The Rock is in it. It looks another hit for Disney. Check out the delightful trailer for yourself.
Moana opens on November 23.
