It's that time of the month again: The top-selling games of August have been revealed by market research firm Circana. July's rising star EA Sports College Football 25 is now on the second place, bested by Madden NFL 25. This doesn't come as much of a surprise considering it's the 25th consecutive year in which a new Madden NFL franchise release was the best-selling title in its release month. According to executive director Mat Piscatella, the streak began with Madden NFL 2001 in August 2000.
The #3 spot goes to Star Wars: Outlaw, which has sold more copies than EA Sports MVP Bundle (which includes College Football 25 and Madden NFL 25), as well as Elden Ring, which is down to #5 compared to #3 of last month. Considering it's been over three months since the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, it's natural to see a drop-off.
Two other new arrivals in August are Visions of Mana (#10) and Gundam Breaker 4 (#11), sitting around Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and The Elder Scrolls Online. Aside from the new faces, quite a few games reclaimed a slot in the #20, including Forza Horizon 5 and Gran Turismo 7. As for some additional insight, Piscatella said that PlayStation 5 is once again leading the month's hardware market in unit and dollar sales, with Xbox Series ranking second on both accounts. Video game hardware spending in general dropped 36% in August compared to a year ago.
